This hotel has s serious security problem. our jewelery was taken from our in room safe. The attitude of the hotel was, to say the least very dissapointing, not my problem type of attitude. This hotel is overated, and future guests need to be aware of what to expect.

First impressions were not great. Reception staff had a fairly casual and unbothered attitude towards us. The room we had was 'ok' (nothing to get excited over) but had to change it after the first night because of a serious water leak in our bathroom. We managed to get the room changed only after making three calls to reception to get them to come and do something about the problem. The second room was described as a 'complimentary upgrade' but was the same as the first apart from the replacement of the CRT TV with an LCD TV. Also one of the phones did not work, and neither did the TV remote control (not that we used it much). Bar staff had the same attitude as the recepton staff. Phone calls were extremely expensive (minimum charge of $19 (yes, nineteen dollars!) for making even a local call. Locaton of the hotel is the only positive thing I can say about this hotel. I suggest you avoid it.

Great location, impressive front, helpful front of house and check in staff (got an upgrade for wedding anniversary)but slow check in process. Nice room, nice service in Harrys bar. First class service and food in Mindys restaurant. a pleasant stay only spoilt by small hospitality tray in pool or gym. not make international phone calls from this hotel. Charges for call to UK, 1st minute USD18.86 thereafter USD6.12 per minute plus taxes and surcharges!! At least Jesse James had the decency to wear a mask when he robbed someone. Two 3 minute calls to tell my kids I had arrived OK cost USD 31 each. When I pointed out the high charges to the receptionist on checkout she at least had the decency to look embarrassed
I was not impressed.

This is an "ok" hotel. Simply they screwed up with the little details: no bag inside the trash can, NO minibar, television... well, for this price, I would expect for more than just "viewable" TV. Very lousy quality. Final conclusion - good location, that's it. * The review refers to the regular rooms, not the "premier's.

When trying to book a room at the NY Helmsley they told me that to get high-speed internet access I would need to upgrade to a 'premier' room for $50 extra. They asked me to reserve a regular room and once done, they would look to see if a premier one was available. As soon as I said I would pay for the premier one in advance, all of a sudden they KNEW there were none available on the dates I wanted to stay. They just said there may be some to get me to make my reservation, and then they were planning on telling me sorry there weren't any.

We recently stayed at the NY Helmsley for a weeks holiday in New York and were very impressed. It is located in a good position within easy reach of Grand Central Station and so the whole subway network. The rooms are clean and by European standards at least, are reasonably large. The staff were friendly and helpful. We didn't use the in house bar or restaurant so we cannot comment on them. The nearby Andrews diner for breakfast and the Oyster bar at Grand Central were both excellent.

We found our stay at The New York Helmsley was quite pleasureable. We felt so centralized staying at this location for all of our planned events. This was my first trip of many to New York. my future husband and myself are planning on staying at The New York Helmsley Hotel for each and every visit that we make to New York.

A value for money no thrills hotel. Everything you need for business: high speed internet access, clean room, desk, etc. No thrills means: no mini-bar, trouser press, etc. Comparatively well priced therefore. Excellent location East Manhattan, especially if on business to UN.

Hotel very smart & clean. We stayed on the 38th floor, a little too high up for my liking!

Satisfied Experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
I just returned from spending 3 nights in NYC-all at the Helmsley Hotel. I used this website to help me make my selection so I felt oblidge to return the favor. The Hotel was great! The rooms were big, clean and the bathroom was huge! The first night upon our late arrival they put my boyfriend & I in a double room but were very accomodating to move us to our requested room (king Size Bed) the next morning. I honestly only have good things to say about this hotel and will likely return. I got a good rate online $149/night and for that price it is totally worth it. I would however note that you shoud request a high floor as you can hear the street traffic in the morning

Excellent location and staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
Couldn't really find much fault with this hotel. The location is fantastic - almost opposite Grand Central Station so extremely convenient for the subway - which now seems quite safe to use. Also approx 5 min walk from 5th Ave and being on 42nd St it's only 10 min walk from Times Square to the west and a 10 min walk to United Nations building to the east. Rooms are a good size (we were in a twin) and the bathroom was also a reasonable size. The only problem with the bathroom was the hairdryer - no power at all, but we managed. I overheard that the hotel is being refurbished from the bottom rooms upwards - we were on the 29th floor and we weren't in a refurbished room and it would not stop me from staying there again - the room was still of good quality furnishings etc. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was very clean - an enormous plus as far as I'm concerned!

Never Again

from BBinVA
While the room was nicely decorated, and the view breathtaking, the surroundings were filthy. I've stayed at interstate hotels cleaner than my room! My major complaint was with housekeeping -not only for the dirty room, but because we had left some items behind. They mailed some of the items back home to us (I initiated the call to find the missing items) but they kept the new items I'd purchased in NYC, i.e., all of my items were not returned. They were all in one drawer, so they were not in several locations throughout the room. Somebody's kid is wearing the new school clothes I'd purchased for my son! I wrote two letters - one to the hotel manager, and one to the hotel headquarters - and never received a response.

What a nightmare!

Never, never again will I book anyone from this firm at any Helmsley hotel. Upon arriving, my boss found five other bedraggled guests sitting in the lobby who had also been told their rooms were either given away or not ready. My bosses room, which had been reserved a month in advance, was a filthy hole. They also failed to provide room service as requested.

A Disrepaired Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I spent one night only (thank god!) in this "stated" 4 stars hotel in NYC... it was the worst experience I have ever had.
I stayed there first in 1995. At that time i thought that the hotel was in a great location but it really needed to be upgrated in furnishing, maintenance, style and cleaning.
Well, after 9 years nothing has changed, it actually got worst!
This time my room was 2322 and once entering the room i got a weird was like being in New York in the 70's!!!
Brownish colors, faded fabrics, kitchy old fashion furnitures topped with stained marbles and a very old dated bathroom.
One of the window shutters was blocked in the open position while the other collapsed on me when i tried to pull it down to close it.
The end result, of course, was that I was unable to sleep with the light coming in from the outside.
And if that was not bad enough, the door to my room could not be locked when leaving and anybody could have broken in my room just by pushing the door and without using the key.
I mentioned all the above problems to the reception but they told me they couldn't change my room because it was full i thought that it was unbelievable that a hotel in such sad disrepair could be a four star hotel and full booked too!
Frankly, in an age of increasing liabilties and security, I don't fell like i could recommend this hotel to any body.

Stayed here for 4 nights in june and had a wonderful time. It was our first time to new york and I had spent ages researching before eventually settling for the New York Helmsley - I'm glad to say I picked well and got good value for money (£100 sterling room rate per night - booked on OctopusTravel). As other tripadvisor users point out the hotel decor is in 1980s mode but dont let this put you off - the rooms are extremely spacious and clean (which I understand is unusual for new york) - we had two queen beds in our room on th 33rd floor - with a fantastic view of the new york skyline and chrysler building just opposite. There was also a fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. Location is excellent being a 2 min walk from grand central station (v handy for subway). Also grand central has an excellent food court where we often picked up a tasty and reasonable breakfast. Times square is also only 5-10 min stroll. Didn't eat in the hotel during our stay-however they did serve tasty complimentary hor d'oeurves from 5pm-7pm each night in the bar. Will definitely be back!!

Cannot fault the service

from A TripAdvisor Member
Chose the Helmsley for my honeymoon. Service was great and the staff very friendly. The bellman even got us moved to a room with a king size bed after he learned we were on honeymoon and were given a room with 2 beds. Would stay again, and recommend this hotel. Excellent value.

ll be back!

We stayed at the Helmsley in April 2004, and we couldn't fault it! Its location was amazing, easy walking distance to many of the top attractions. The staff were always friendly and helpful. Security was good. The rooms were spotless and cleaned to a high standard every day. It was really good value for money. We had the most amazing time and we are planning to go back to the Helmsley for New Year!

Planning my return....

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have been meaning to do this for a while. I stayed in the New York Helmsley in March and as other reviewers have pointed out the decor is a little dated but I can tell you they make up for it in so many other ways the staff are amazing very friendly and very very helpful. The location is brilliant it is located it is so near near everything and I have to say I can't fault anything about it. I am already planning my return visit..

t want to leave

from A TripAdvisor Member
My boyfriend and I stayed here last week and I loved it!!
The decor is a bit sad but the hotel is very, very happy. The staff were always willing to help and there with a ready smile.
The location is perfect for getting out and about and I enjoyed every minute of my stay.

Top Local Tips for New York City

Location The location of the Helmsley is the best - walking distance even with luggage - from Grand Central. I walked everywhere - Times Square is very close. Taxis are also everywhere and the subway is very safe and very easy to use and very near the hotel.

discount Make sure you go to the Macys and Bloomingdales customer service desks to get a voucher worth 11% off.

Dinning in NYC Mee Noodle House located at 795 9th Avenue at the corner of west 53rd Street in Manhattan (212-765-2929) was cheap & cheerful and very tasty. Good value. Pam Real Thai Food located at west 49th St., between 9th and 10th Ave. again very good value and tasty food. Cash only
