Security problem
This hotel has s serious security problem. our jewelery was taken from our in room safe. The attitude of the hotel was, to say the least very dissapointing, not my problem type of attitude. This hotel is overated, and future guests need to be aware of what to expect.

Over-rated
First impressions were not great. Reception staff had a fairly casual and unbothered attitude towards us. The room we had was 'ok' (nothing to get excited over) but had to change it after the first night because of a serious water leak in our bathroom. We managed to get the room changed only after making three calls to reception to get them to come and do something about the problem. The second room was described as a 'complimentary upgrade' but was the same as the first apart from the replacement of the CRT TV with an LCD TV. Also one of the phones did not work, and neither did the TV remote control (not that we used it much). Bar staff had the same attitude as the recepton staff. Phone calls were extremely expensive (minimum charge of $19 (yes, nineteen dollars!) for making even a local call. Locaton of the hotel is the only positive thing I can say about this hotel. I suggest you avoid it.

Great location
Great location, impressive front, helpful front of house and check in staff (got an upgrade for wedding anniversary)but slow check in process. Nice room, nice service in Harrys bar. First class service and food in Mindys restaurant. a pleasant stay only spoilt by small problems...no hospitality tray in room..no pool or gym. WARNING..do not make international phone calls from this hotel. Charges for call to UK, 1st minute USD18.86 thereafter USD6.12 per minute plus taxes and surcharges!! At least Jesse James had the decency to wear a mask when he robbed someone. Two 3 minute calls to tell my kids I had arrived OK cost USD 31 each. When I pointed out the high charges to the receptionist on checkout she at least had the decency to look embarrassed

I was not impressed.
This is an "ok" hotel. Simply they screwed up with the little details: no bag inside the trash can, NO minibar, television... well, for this price, I would expect for more than just "viewable" TV. Very lousy quality. Final conclusion - good location, that's it. * The review refers to the regular rooms, not the "premier’s.

Reservations will lie to you
When trying to book a room at the NY Helmsley they told me that to get high-speed internet access I would need to upgrade to a 'premier' room for $50 extra. They asked me to reserve a regular room and once done, they would look to see if a premier one was available. As soon as I said I would pay for the premier one in advance, all of a sudden they KNEW there were none available on the dates I wanted to stay. They just said there may be some to get me to make my reservation, and then they were planning on telling me sorry there weren't any.
