Fab location - indifferent staff
Avalon is in a brilliant location for both up and downtown NY and transport links. Empire State round the corner and Penn Station five minutes walk away.
It is clean and in good decorative order. The room we stayed in was large - had space for a sofa and chair with a table. Was a basic rate room. Was expensive at £118 per night but cheap NY hotel are hard to come by and it was Thanks Giving weekend.
Good size hotel - not so big that you have to queue for ages to speak to a member of staff at reception but staff dripping with NY 'couldn't care less' attitude which gets a bit waring.
Bathroom was the best NY we have seen in a hotel - large bath, separate walk in shower, great lighting, great illuminated shaving mirror and ample supply of good quality toiletries.
Breakfast was provided but here's the downside. If you get downstairs by 8.00am - fine, you get a seat. Any time after that and you have to queue. Breakfast is basic. No cooked food available - all to...Read more

Something special
My wife and I spent a week in New York in September and we spent 3 nights in the Avalon followed by 3 nights in the Hilton on the Avenue of the Americas. While the facilities at the Hilton were good, the Avalon, in our opinion, had much more character and made it feel that we were staying in a real New York hotel with real New York character and not just another business-class clone hotel that could be in any city in the world. The location of the Avalon is superb, with fantastic views of the Empire State Building at night, if your room faces it. This, coupled with good access to the subway, Times Square, etc, makes it an ideal location to explore Manhattan from. The rooms themselves were spacious, modern, quiet and well maintained. Staff were friendly and unobtrusive, and the included breakfast set you up for the day. There is a wealth of good restaurants in the vicinity and the Minado Japanese sushi buffet is next door and is a particular favourite of ours. We are returning to New ...Read more

Nice & central
We liked a lot this cosy hotel, we had a view of the Empire State Building from our room, and the location is very good, the staff made a good impression on us. The room was our favourite since it was comfortable and had all the commodities we needed, (internet, TV, whirlpool, separate shower ,etc)

Excellent room at reasonable price
We found the room at the Avalon hotel to be a larger than average size and the bathroom was superb. Our room had a view to the Empire State Building also. The staff was very good too. Would stay there again.
