Pathetic Customer Service with a Smile
from bonz123Right from the start we had problems: we stayed for 5 nights and here is a run down of how our honeymoon started:
Tuesday - Fridge not working - blowing our hot air. Service guy called, wait for him, says machine is repaired and to let it reset for a couple of hours. Come in after a walk around the city looking forward to a cold drink and faced with warm fridge. Switch off fridge all together after it keeps us awake until 3am with noise.
Wednesday - We are offered to move rooms in the morning. We pack all our luggage before we leave the room at 9 am and give staff in lobby permission to move it to a new room and hand over our room card. When we return at 4pm, our rooms have not been changed and we have to wait another 30 minutes for manager to authorise this. Then we move our luggage 3 floors ourselves. (*** Joseph the Valet deserves a mention here because he intercepted us getting onto a lift and helped
us with some of our luggage.)
- Arrive in new room and settle down to watch some TV. TV remote not working and again call reception. TV Guy sent up a has to make several repairs to TV, including replace decoder box and remote.
Thursday - No hot water until lunch time. Told that nobody else complained about this fact.
Friday - wanted to iron some clothes for an evening out, and the iron leaked water all over clean clothes. It also had no heat coming from it. Called Lobby and waited an hour for a replacement iron. It never turned up for the duration of our stay.
- Arrived home from the movie house at 1 am. At 2am awoken by shouting in the hallway from other guests partying. This happened again 30 mins later. Praise should go to the front door security who responded on both occasions.
Saturday - Very tired, we were offered an upgrade to a better room. We declined because the thought of packing all of our luggage one day before moving and for the 2nd time in a week seemed too much to bare.
After speaking to the manager halfway through our stay we were offered $50 credit to our room. When I sent an e-mail at the end of our trip rather than fill in the comment card it was ignored and to this day we have heard no response.
A beautiful hotel, very luxuriously decorated. But that does not make a hotel great. The customer service is extremely poor and in the end we were made to feel that we were complaining too much. At a cost of $1400 for 5 nights I think that we have the right to expect things to be good and when they go wrong they should be sorted to the customers satisfaction - or the customer should be compensated adequately.
Would not recommend anyone to take a chance - better to book a mainstream hotel like the hyatt or delta - at least you know from the start that you are just a number instead of being led to believe that your hotel will offer you great personal service.
We loved our stay at The Alex
from jordigalThe staff were in on a surprise and when we arrived they showed us to a room where a friend of ours was waiting to surprise us. She had flown in from Saudi Arabia to join us and the staff had helped her to spring this surprise. We hadn't seen her for 33 years!! I think the staff enjoyed the surprise as much as we did. Every time we came and went they were so friendly and helpful and we felt so much at home.
We had a great stay. The Alex is close to everything too. We can't wait to return and have told everyone we can about this lovely hotel. The deal we got was amazing!
We had a magical time in NY and staying at the Alex was part of the magic.
What a dump
from A TripAdvisor MemberGood experience with a few exceptions
from ChendryThe only difficulties we had were with the amenities of the hotel such as the televisions, lighting fixtures, the shower, locks and the elevator. These were far from person friendly and generally took some practice to operate with any success. The elevator in particular seemed to have a mind of its own (we nicknamed it Hal) and would often stop at every floor to see if there were people who might like to get on. Other times, it would assign the elevator the furthest away to your floor while others came and went. This is apparently a very hi-tech set up but it left us a bit anxious about getting up and down to our room on the 31st floor.
All in all though The Alex was a great place to stay and we received a very reasonable deal with flight on expedica.

newark This is the first year we have arrived at NEWAR(Usually JFK).What a fab and easy airport.Immigration really quick 5 mins and only 30 minutes into Manhatten.
The Spotted Pig in the West end Great hip restaurant, but incredably long wait. I was pretty toasted having a two hour wait with all that great beer. Restaurant is highly rated in the New Yorker, but I would say it was fun and the food was very good for the price.
Top of the Rock/Rockefeller Center The Top of the rock is worth going to. The views from the top of Rockefeller Center were spectacular and much, much better than the Empire State Building. Totally redone recently, this attraction was worth the money!

Besides, the hotel is far from its "nice & cosy" description on-line and in the books. It's dirty and the lobby is sooo small you wont be able to find a space to put your suicase.
