beware room 223!
from pittsburgh06On the good side, we got a smaller but quiet room the next night on the third floor, in the middle of the building. So everything was great and the hotel was very accommodating about the room change, given how obviously crowded they were. Rooms were spare and old but clean, NO SIGN OF COCKROACHES (despite other reviews to the contrary). I also learned alot about the Lower East Side by staying in the neighborhood.
A tale of two visits.
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe feared the worst when we read some of the reviews on this site but our first visit was fine. The room was basic but warm and the facilities were all clean and fully functional, there was a minor problem with a very noisy radiator but that was addressed. Bearing in mind we had paid only $80 including tax per night - which is far far cheaper than anywhere else we stayed - I was ready to come home and write a favourable review.
However, our second stay was a different story. Firstly we paid much more for this room though maybe that was because it was booked short notice on a very busy
weekend - halloween.
The room itself very small, it felt like a converted corridor and was a bit grotty, the shower just about worked, there were huge paint flakes hanging from the ceiling and, yes, we did spot a small coackroach. I'm very glad we we only there for a night.
To be fair to the staff, they do always ask you to view the room before checking in we had nowhere else to go on the last night so we had to stay. Also, contrary to other posts here, I found them very helpful.
So in conclusion I have to say that how good you find your stay here is down to which room you get given, so when they ask you to view it first, make sure you do!
I think the rooms upstairs ( oh, and watch those stairs!) are far better than the ones on the lower floor.
I'll give this 3 stars overall, though I would have given the first stay 4 and the second stay 1.
Just dont think about staying here!
from A TripAdvisor MemberLocation Location Location- Great Place
from A TripAdvisor Memberno cable, no phones in the room, no elevator, the scent of disinfectant- but who cares?
I recommend getting a room with its own bath, since I'm not a big fan of shared facilities, but what I saw of the shared facilities wasn't too bad.
The location is FANTASTIC- a short walk to the Grand Street subway station- a five minute walk to Broadway and FANTASTIC HIP shopping (Bloomingdales, Puma, Sephora, H&M, etc.)
My only complaint is that I asked for an extra blanket and it never showed up. But I'm sure if I had pursued it, I would have gotten one, no problem. Also my TV had no remote, but again who is in NYC to watch TV?
Great historic location near some great historic buildings (Stanford White's Bowery Savings Bank - FANTASTIC, the 1907 former Police Headquarters, Chinatown, Little Itlay)
For efficiency and location and no frills and history- SOHOTEL is it-

little place up the block! the food is real gooooooooooooooooood !!!!!!! the people at the hotel told me just how to find it. thank you : }
The restaurant on the boating lake in Central Park This place has long been a favourite of mine and having not been to New York for a while I am pleased to see that it has upgraded its image a little and now provides either a full restaurant service or a bistro service outside on the deck. Such a lovely place to while away an afternoon, drinking wine and watching the rowers on the lake. Definitely worht a visit on Sunday lunch time after a walk in the park.
subway use the subway, it is fast effecient, and easy to use. People are very helpful when asking for help getting around.
