Most rooms are suites with full kitchens and are very nice. All of the Affinia hotels are a great bargain if you are looking for space! Shelburne is in a good location ..not TOO touristy but near the mid-town "stuff", has a super Hamburger Restaurant (RARE) and a really nice (but not cheap) rooftop bar in the nice weather.

What a wonderful first trip to New York. Our room was perfect. Very clean, very big, and the most incredible view from our HUGE balcony. I found all staff to be very friendly and helpful. This hotel is perfectly situated to the Manhattan hotspots, and has some great local ethnic stores and businesses located behind the hotel on 3rd Avenue. I have recommended the hotel to friends and will stay there again.

Smelly and dirty too

After reading the reviews on TirpAdvisor about this hotel, I thought we'd be lucky enough not to experience what a few had in the way of poor experiences. Well, we had a bad one too! The first room we got smelled of smoke and we had booked a non-smoking one. We asked to move to another room and it too smelled of smoke. Everything smelled in it despite the fact that they supposedly cleaned and ozonated (?) the room and said it was also a non-smoking room!?! What is it with these people? Why do they keep lying to customers? On top of that, the carpets were dirty in both rooms (cleaned what?), especially in the closets and the perimeters of the rooms. We were paying $275 a night for this filth? On top of that, the Genereal Manager was never around to speak to! No apology, no nothing! I don't know why people think this hotel is so great!?! Maybe they are used to worse ones so this seems better than what they are accustomed to? We moved out after spending one night in the second room and being told there were no other/better rooms available. They wouldn't help us find another hotel either! What sort of service is that? We demanded a refund too, but did not get one. Don't stay here! They don't treat people well. No one deserves that sort of service!

Unaccommodating

Where to begin? I took my daughters to NYC for a week to celebrate several special events. I travel a lot in my line of work, and for pleasure, so I know a class act when I see it and I stay with it. Affinia's Shelburne Murray Hill Hotel is anything but that.

I've stayed at cheap little motels that were far cleaner and more accommodating than these people were. I should have moved out, but I stuck it out, just so I could review them on Customer Service.

Well, I should have had my entire stay comped after what we went through! This was one of the worst hotels we've ever stayed in. Dirty rooms, lack of functional utensils in the kitchens, poor response time to complaints, price gouging, and worse. And to think I chose the Shelburne based on comments I read here on TripAdvisor.com and Affinia's own website photos. What a mistake!!

There were so many things that went wrong that it would take far too much space here to write it all. Let's just say that by the end of our week, we left feeling tired, sick, and very, very angry. I will never recommend any of Affinia's hotels after this terrible experience. Hospitality... what a joke! Even the Front Desk people (except for one young man) all looked frumpy and unclean. Stay away. Stay very far away!

Excellent hotel & value for your money; staff, room, location etc. was perfect. 15 minute walk to times square, rockefeller center etc. but worth the peace & quiet; empire state bldg right out our window--awesome! room was perfect for family of four; if DVC member highly recommend this hotel; you won't go wrong staying there; we will definitely return!

Memorable!!

I stayed at the Shelburne for 16 nights. If at all my new York trip turned out memorable, a big part of the credit goes to Shelburne. So much that I get dreams of getting to leave there forever. The location is great. A short walk from the hotel will take you to the best places of Manhattan. Empire State Building, Grand Central, Times Square, Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center and more. The service attendants are very nice and always eager to help you out. Extremely well-maintained and very neat. Whatever you need is just round the corner and I felt very much at home. Actually, a dream home. Negatives: The restuarants are little expensive. I was checked into a no-smoking suite.

A happy stay at the Shelburne

We really liked the Shelburne and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. It's a tiny bit tired and I'd guess the rooms are about 5 years away from refurbishment, but with careless kids in tow that can be a blessing. The location is residential which is nice because the local shops and delis seem to cater for real people more than tourists. That said, Grand Central Terminal is only a 10 minute walk away.

The clean and comfortable suites really are enormous. We had a one bedroom with a sofa bed in the living room. The sofa bed was fine for the kids (8 &11), but I guess it would be uncomfortable for a large adult. Our position at the front of the Hotel facing Lexington Avenue meant that there was some traffic noise. I used ear plugs, nobody else was bothered by it.

Being English I found the presence of a coffee percolator rather than a kettle disturbing. It could only manage one cup of tea at a time!

All the staff we dealt with were friendly and accommodating and helped make our stay here a really happy one.

Found the Shelburne convenient (close to Grand Central and subway lines), near tasty restaurants, staff helpful, quiet room (an inside one.) The room decor neutral, a little dreary, bathroom adequate, room and bathroom clean. The staff helpful and pleasant. The room temperature was comfortably and quietly maintained.

Moved out of the Shelburne

What a dreadful visit I had with the Shellburne Murray Hill. The first room they gave me was a smoking room on a floor that reaked of smoke and then tried to convince me it was non smoking despite the ashtrays and matches. The second room was shabby and very dusty. We went to open the window and it fell off the track into our hands. The little kitchen was dirty. The very next day I found another hotel for similiar rate and left despite my 4 day reservation.

Our family of four spent 3 nights here recently and would definitely stay here again. Found a great rate for a suite online and called hotel directly to see if they'd match it, which they did. We arrived before the check-in time, no problem, they cheerfully stored our luggage and valet parked our car. Had lunch in their restaurant, Rare, before heading out to do some shopping. Nice wait staff, good burgers, yummy basket of 3 kinds of fries and dipping sauces. Looked like a fun bar scene later that evening. Our room exceeded our expectations, was very clean and huge for a NYC hotel room. Furnished in a traditional style, the room included a living room with a sofa bed, huge tv, dining table, 2 queen beds in a separate room with another tv, small bathroom but lots of storage, clean and new looking. Having a kitchenette made for leisurely mornings or quick pasta instead of having to go out. We looked forward to returning each day to a room that allowed us each to have space to relax. A bonus, we were able to connect to the internet from our laptop (wireless) each day without obtaining a password from the hotel, saving $9.95 a day. When a list of available networks popped up, we simply chose one. I highly recommend the Shelburne and look forward to a return visit!

Our second trip in less than a year

An unexpected return to New York City within a year of our last trip found us back at the Shelburne with pleasure. This was again our choice for many reasons, the great neighborhood, the spacious accommodations and the at-home ambiance in the midst of Manhattan. What's not to like about having your own apartment in the city? It was so relaxing to eat breakfast in our room over the complimentary NY Times and not have to face the city first thing each day. It's easy to get anywhere from this ideal location and we loved being in Murray Hill - a real hill in the city! The staff is helpful and pleasant without being intrusive and the amenities and features were all that we needed or desired. We hope to visit again soon.

New York at Christmas A trip of a lifetime. We always wanted to see New York at Christmastime and it was wonderful. We took in 3 plays Tarzan just ok, Chorus line good, The Jersey Boys Great, The Rockettes Great. There is a 1/2 price ticket booth near the theatres but we bought ours from home. The Empire State bullidng was very windy and cold, we saw the Statue of Liberty from the free Staten Island Ferry. Ice skating is less crowded at Wolman Rink in Central Park or Bryant Park. Rockefeller Center is most beautiful both during the day and at night. Times Square was very crowded and dirty. Food is very expensive in that area. Everywhere else the food was reasonable. We went to Tom's Restaurant up on 112th on the west side of the park, Columbus? Seinfeld series was set there. It was fast and cheap. Murray Hill was good for eating and also Chelsea district.
