Have stayed here three times now and have found Red Roof very central and also a very good breakfast to start to day off.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Red Roof Inn Manhattan Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had booked the Redroof on the Internet two months prior to arriving.
I had added additional information that on the day of my arrival I would be arriving late i.e. 11pm and followed this with a phone call to ensure they had received the internet booking.

Upon arrival I was told that my room would not be available until the next morning but an alternative room was available without a shower and that I would not be charged for the 1st nights accommodation. The room that I was given was simply a meeting room with two camp beds on the floor! Being so tired I accepted this and had the worst night sleep of my life. The next morning at 7am the bell boy knocked on the door of the room with the keep to my room we should have had.

After this the rest of the stay was fine with the location being excellent.

I complained about my stay on the Redroof website but have no feedback and would advise people to be wary of this hotel chain.

Great location and room was fine!

Checked into the hotel and was greeted by a snotty front desk, but the room was wayyyy better than anticipated with all the tales of NY sized rooms. Not large but decent size with great TV (never had time to watch it) comfortable King sized bed, and small but adequate bathroom. Clean as a whistle as they say in Canada. For $109 per nite in September couldn't complain. They recommended a great restaurant that was more than reasonable and had a fabulous Italian meal. The concierge were a little snooty but all in all helpful. Go to Katz's for a pastrami, subway everywhere, and if in doubt ask a local for help they are extemely gracious! First time to NY and won't be our last, great city, great time and excellent accomadations. I would definitely consider the other hotels in the "apple core chain", if this is representative.

Good, but a smile would not hurt

I stayed at the RRI Manhattan for 3 nights at the end of December. The room rate was very competitive and I had no great expectations. The hotel is conveniently located for public transport. The room was clean, neat and compared with other, more expensive hotels in New York, was value for money. The only negative thing was the very unfriendly staff, especially upon check-in and maybe the small breakfast room, although the complimentary breakfast was good. I think the lack of customer service is a minus for this otherwise good hotel and as other reviews also reflect this, it was not a somewhat bad exception.

Great Stay

from raginbul364
Stayed here from 12/31/03-1/3/04 and thought it was excellent! We had a room on the 8th floor next to the elevator, and had no problems with noise during the night! The staff was very helpful. They even let us have a late 1:00 check out on our last day. Area is great, 1 block from Macy's and Empire State Bldg. 2 blocks from Madison Square Garden. Many Subway stops within 2 blocks! I would definetly stay here again.

Small and Rude

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Room was very small and shower was bad...

The staff is poorly trained and somewhat rude...I got treated better at deli store LOL.

If you are really tight on budget and don't mind about service, this is a place to stay...

Do yourself a favor. Spend $20 more and stay at better hotel...

Great For the Price!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had used this web site to determine where I would stay based upon the reviews I chose this hotel, also because of price. Every other hotel I had selected had much worse reviews and were more expensive! Let me just say this hotel is in an excellent location in terms of shopping, it is just 2 blocks away from the Empire State Bldg, which was outside my window! (very cool view!) It is in a somewhat quiet side street but yet so close to the subway which is only 2 blocks away as well. The staff were very helpful in giving directions and assisting scheduling a cab to pick us up the morning we left. The continental breakfast was not so much to be desired, but it was more then the other hotels offered, which was NOTHING! The room was very clean and when we asked for extra towels, they were given to us each night we were there. I would suggest staying on one of the higher floors, we stayed on the 11th and not near an elevator, they are a bit loud. Next time I come to NYC I will definitely stay here again.

Clean and neat, great location, but...

I arrived at the RRI during the snowstorm, on Saturday, 06 Dec 2003. Reception staff were not friendly or welcoming at all. Efficient maybe, but do not even expect a smile from anyone at reception. For the more than $200 per night stay (Saturday night during shoppers weekend) I sure did expect something more. Unfortunately "management" at this hotel do not have a visible "customer survey system", otherwise I sure would have let them know how I felt about my reception. It may seem trivial, but for a first-time visitor to the "Big Apple", impressions do seem to last. My room was ample with a King size bed and a working desk. Everything was clean and neat and a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets outside. I was only on the 6th floor and would recommend that you ask for a higher floor, as the traffic noise from West 32nd Street kept me awake for most of the night. Be aware: Should you need to pay a deposit for telephone calls at reception with CASH, do expect some problems getting any credit balance back. The reception never seem to have any cash on hand, not to give out change nor to cash any travellers cheques (which they offer as a service in their services-brochure). The area in which the hotel is located is quite convenient for transportation (subway and Penn station) and also seems safe. I would recommend this hotel if you can cope with the gripes I had, nothing major, but still quite irritating. Would I stay there again? Maybe...

better than sleeping in the subway station

from txlonghorn95
The New York Times has higher thread count than the Red Roof's sheets do, so at first glance the subway station may seem like a better hotel. However, the hotel room had a lock, refrigerator, microwave, tv, free wireless internet access, and a coke machine right outside the room. The washcloth provided an excellent skin exfoliant with its sandpaper-like texture. Despite the hotel's web site's claim that this hotel room would have two chairs, ours only had one. My fiance and I had to take turns sitting down. I am using the chair now as I write this review. The wallpaper border was slightly crooked and peeling in places. The heater worked well, but the thermostat did not, so we had to turn the unit off and on often. Compared to other New York City hotels, it is good value for the money, large room, clean, good location, and safe. Our neighbors enjoyed the proximity of neighborhood pizza joints to satisfy their munchies ..., which kept the hallways smelling pine fresh.

Above average for the price

from A TripAdvisor Member
Spent 4 nights here in November. For price I would definitely recommend it. Fantastic location, clean, safe, adequate breakfast with decent sized rooms. If you want luxury don't expect it but for the money you won't find better. Anyway who comes to New York just to stay in their hotel room ?

Cheap, central and clean!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I did a lot of research on NY hotels and eventually chose the Red Roof for our Oct-03 stay- and we were both very pleased with it. The hotel is well located in a Korean neighbourhood and is within walking distance of Times Square, and Empire State is across the road. The rooms were medium sized and were very clean and tidy. We were on the top (17th) floor and did get some noise from the elevator which was next to our room- I would recommend requesting a room away from this in future. Staff were generally helpful without being overly friendly but for the location and price who cares!

Top Local Tips for New York City

transportation from airport to hotel Super shuttle was very efficient and reasonably priced especially for larger groups as it can carry 12 passengers.

Dont book a taxi to airport with hotel flag one down on the street, hotels charge you. there are 13000 taxi cabs in NYC always up and down the streets.

Woodbury Common Outlet Rent a car for one day and go there for your shopping experience!!!
