Absolutely the worst service I have ever encountered ANYWHERE. The receptionists were extremely rude, snappy and downright aggressive; rundown rooms; bed was broken in the middle and dirty; shuttle service was late both ways. Did not even have the courage to try the restaurant. Stay away from this hellhole at all costs...

The real appeal of this hotel is its location. Across the street from Penn Station, down the street from Macy's, wonderful view of the Empire State Building, and a quick cab ride to anywhere else. Comfortable, affordable. I will not forget the breath-taking scene of the Empire State Building at dawn from the breakfast lounge.

Good value for location of hotel and quality of room after we changed from a small run-down room that was meant to be a single room, but had a double bed stuck against a wall. Management was willing to move us to a larger, better kept room with a king sized bed, for the same money. In-house diner style coffee shop where we had breakfast, was pedestrian, but typical of New York. However, it was over priced!
Service at the front desk was good & efficient in all respects. However, Security failed to communicate with the front desk about a lost item which they found - means communication among staff is poor. All in all it was an OK experience given the discount room rate for an up graded room.

I found the New Yorker through a friend and it is in an ideal location right in the heart of the city. You can't get much closer to the center. The rooms are smallish and classic. Also very clean.

I would stay in this hotel again mainly for the location - opposite Madison Square Gardens, 10 min walk from Empire State Building & Macys, 10 min walk from Times Square, within walking distance of Central Park & 5th Avenue.
The hotel is very nice, rooms are large & clean, we didnt have much dealings with the staff as we were out sight seeing for most of the day but they seemed to be friendly & helpful. The diner in the hotel is handy for breakfasts and late night dinners if you are out and about all day. It also provides a cheap bus to Newark airport (think it was about $12) which is much cheaper than a taxi, the concierge desk arranged the tickets for us. It's also opposite Penn Street Station, which we used as we got a train from the airport to the hotel, but I wouldn't recommend this if you are travelling in rush hour with luggage as we were.
