While the location is great, there is little else to say positive about this establishment. As I entered the lobby I felt like I had entered a dilapidated dormitory with a fresh coat of paint, and some newly added lockers that you find in your neighbirhood gym. If all you require is a bed and communal shower than this is your place. As for my stay... I left before I contracted the plague

Location was great but there were strange things in the room. 1st they put us in a room with barred windows, and my mom went mad. Bad TV channels. Bad for families.

We were looking for something inexpensive, 'ok' rooms but an excellent location. It was all that and if you just need somewhere to sleep it's fine. We loved New York and the location of this hotel made it a lot easier for us. Thanks.

I give this hotel a 6 because it is obviously not a swank place but for anyone looking for a well priced (less than $150.00/night), clean, close to everything place- this is a good choice. Very basic- good for those who only need a decent place to sleep and not much else.

Nice staff. Really helped me out with the safe deposit box. No surplus luxury. Everything you basically need is available at a very low price right down in the center of Manhattan. I just recently recommended this hotel to a collegue of mine.

This hotel has an amazing location, just a few steps from Time Sqaure.
It is a good thing that you will not spend too much time in your hotel when your in New York becuase this place isn't for people who like nice rooms. If your looking for a deal then you found one here, but do not opt for the shared bathroom!!!

it isn't the paris ritz but good value for the money.front desk and rest of the staff went out of their way to accomodate.also the proximaty to time square is a plus.would not hesitate to reccomend or to stay again myself.
Never Again

We booked this hotel almost 9 months in advance. We new it would be basic, but had no idea it would be 'hostel- like'! The room was clean but tiny. Room for two single beds and no more. It was overly warm, with no opening window, and the air conditioning when turned on, smelled strongly of urine and so we couldn't use it.
The hotel was very noisy, the corridors were cold and very unwelcoming.
(no carpets, just hard cold tiled pink and green floors)
There was a hole on the wall of our room with bare wires clearly visible, and this was also the case in some of the corridors, as we found wires hanging from the ceiling draped over the lights.
The hotel staff were unfriendly, and would think nothing of it to interupt our conversations with us to answer phones, tend to other queries without so much as an apology or 'excuse me'.
In my 5 weeks of travelling in the states, this would have to be the worst hotel of the trip.
The only good thing was it's location and the fact that we only had to endure it for 2 nights.
Even though it was 'budget' the prices were over inlated for what we got.
I will not be returning to this hotel, nor do i reccommend it!

My daughter, a friend and I stayed at Portland Square for 3 nights. My friend got a single room, my daughter and I got a double room.
We found the hotel without a problem, the staff was very friendly when we were checking in. Yes, the rooms are *very* small. Smaller than I had ever seen. The double bed in our room took up almost *all* of the room. There was a TV with great reception, including the Cartoon Network, which was a big plus for us, and a sink (and mirror) in it as well. We had a shared bathroom, and it was very basic. Just a toilet and a shower. No sink, no mirror, but there was a place to hang our stuff.
For the money we paid ($75.00 a night) and the location of this place (1/2 a block from Times Square) this was a GREAT deal. The rooms were nicely kept every day and we had no problems. The bill had no surprises at all. The beds were warm and comfortable, and despite the review above me, the temperature was perfect. However, when we were there, we had a huge snowstorm, so the room was a great warm temp for us. I can see how maybe if it was warmer outside that the temp might be a problem. The AC did seem to blow kind of warmish. Good for winter, bad for summer. Hopefully they'll get that taken care of by summer.
I will definitely stay here again.

Hard to compare but pretty decent

First off I would like to say that I and my girlfriend had a great time in NYC. As far as the Portland Square goes I will say this. It's cheap, both in price and quality. We had two complaints. The first was the A/C. It was by far the hottest hotel room that we've ever stayed in and this was around Thanksgiving weekend. I cannot imagine this hotel in the summer! The air conditioner was running full blast throughout the day on its coolest setting and it was doing little and made it very difficult to sleep. The next complaint was the small size of the room however this is NYC and I was told and prepared for that but I was still a little shocked after seeing it. I actually reminds you of a decent sized walk in closet. We got the private bathroom and it was nice. The hotel is loud, you can hear a lot of things going on in the other room and in the hallways. The cleanliness of our room was very good as I give that a thumbs up. The location of the Portland Square was unbeatable in my opinion, right on 47th just a block from 7th ave and Broadway on Times Square. On a friendliness scale I would say that the employees were average however I saw right away that they really didn't care a whole lot about the A/C thing. All in all we had fun and the A/C problem is the only thing that would keep me from going back as I can't really recommend someone to staying there for the simple fact that I don't think I could stand the heat problem. Other than that we would go back again.

Where do we start? Well, we stayed at the Portland Square hotel for 3 nights in September before flying to Vegas to get married. We chose the Portland Square because of its amazing prices, and that is one thing we cannot criticise this hotel for. We have stayed in Midtown Manhatten before and have paid $140 per night for a basic room, so $75 per night here was brilliant. The location of this hotel is also very good. The problems started when we arrived. We had just come off a 7 hour flight from the UK, we were tired and wanted a shower but we'd arrived at the hotel at 2pm (their check-in time is 3pm) we were told to come back later. We were allowed to use their luggage lockers. The first 2 lockers swallowed our money and wouldn't lock, the 3rd locker worked. I stepped back from the locker and stood on a cockroach! What??? When we were finally allowed to check in, they had no room available for us, despite booking directly with them 3 months previous. They apologised and found a room for us. The room was the most disgusting place we have ever stayed (and we have stayed in plenty of Youth Hostels!). The bed linen was stained and smelt musty. There were electrical wires sticking out of holes in the wall! The TV picked up about 2 channels (I know you don't need a TV when you're in the greatest city on Earth but it's still a very basic feature that really should've been sorted....why have a TV in the room if it doesn't work properly?). The bathroom was awful, the toilet was cracked. The floor was dirty so I cleaned it myself. When we took showers the water wouldn't drain away, as the tub filled up the muck from the shower curtain came away into the water, YUK! The most serious complaint with this hotel is that one day we went out and left his Armani shades on the bed (we normally padlock everything away, but forgot), when we returned the shades had gone. We reported this to reception who said that it was our problem. They refused to help saying it was up to us to sort out. We were so angry, the standard of room is depicted in the low price. Surely a low price does not mean that you should have to stay in a dirty room and be stolen from! We would never stay there again. I would rather spend a bit more and stay in a proper hotel.

Great choice and location. When alone the rooms are fine - but when with two of us, it is a little tight with all of the luggage. My brother just stayed here and found it perfect. $99 a night with bath. I will stay here again.

The rooms are NOT that small ( as the last review stated) they are clean. A room would only be smoky if you asked for a smoking room!. The staff were friendly and helpful!. The hotel itself is a drunken stumble from Times Square.
I would tell anyone to stay here who was on a budget and wanted to be in central Manhatten.
You have vending machines, Ice machine, Internet access, Phones in the room TVs too! So for a basic hotel its not bad at all.

I stay here as a place to crash while going out in the city. I would have to say...the room was the size of a closet(NO LIE!!!). The beds were dirty and were not idea. The place was also smelly....smoke and etc. I say pay a lil bit more if you plan to come to NYC.
Top Local Tips for New York City
Off-Broadway Check out Off-Broadway theatres rather than heading to the biggest Broadway shows. Highlights of the current Broadway season (musicals) are "Grey Gardens", "The Drowsy Chaperone", "Company" and "Spring Awakening".
Hotel Shop around for a nice hotel. Even though the location is great it is better to walk a mile or so to have decent accomodation. Walking is a great experience in New York City.
I loved!!! Hey... good things to do in NY: CityPass (53U$ - MOMA, Gunggenhein, Natural Art Museum, Circle Cruise Line, Empire States) - Broadway - I´ve saw Phanton of the Opera, a basketball game in Madison Square!!! I love NY!
