Surprisingly Great!

On a recent pleasure/conference trip with my 8 year old daughter, I decided to save some money and have something other than the Midtown Manhattan experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the Pan American hotel. It was reasonably priced, had a great, knowledgeable, accomodating and friendly staff and was cleaned impeccably daily. The location was so convenient to bus and subway lines to Manhattan and other interesting points in Queens. While the immediate neighborhood was superficially unappealing, we fast discovered a great, cheap and very authentic Chinese restaurant/supermarket next door, a great Afghani restaurant called Bahar's across the street a block down and Pop's diner a block away. We were picked up promptly and free at the airport and the return trip was timely and a nominal fee. While the rooms may seem rundown to some, they were the same quality as the Midtown Hilton, but the Pan Am has a friendlier staff and was more than half the price. We will definitely be staying there again!

The bell captain was so knowledgeable and the organized trip was well worth the money as we were only there for a couple of days. We viewed most of the tourist places so I would definitely recommend the trip the only down side were the beds so uncormfortable as both me and my wife had very bad backs and hardly slept
HORRIBLE Customer Service and Dirty Room!!!!

I stayed at the Pan American Hotel in Queens, NY. My mom booked the reservation so I really had no choice of hotel since it was a family excursion. The only man that was polite was the gentleman that ran the concierge. The bellhop was decent, but not too friendly. The receptionist was polite, yet not inviting. AND THE WORST PART: DO NOT DINE AT THE HOTEL RESTAURANT!! I went in there about 9PM for some dinner and the waitress would not seat me. I stood at the door for 10 minutes and when she finally recognized me, she said to me in an extremely rude way, "What do you want?" I said i wanted a table and she rolled her eyes and told me to sit down. I sat down and watched her walk past me about 10 times and serve the other 3 customers that were in there and then I watched her sit down at another table. She just stared at me. I left and then came back a few minutes later. I asked her why she had not served me. Her response was, "I'm busy and I'm tired, can't you see?"

Besides that, the room was extremely small, the heater didnt work and the refrigerator reeked of an awful smell and had green goop stuck to the door.

However, the shuttle drivers were nice and polite. DO NOT STAY HERE.

Pan American Hotel is the kind of hotel for those who travel to see the sites and need a place to rest. If you are the kind of traveller who spends most of their time in the hotel, Pan American may not be for you. My husband and I stayed for 3 nights. It is reasonably priced and you get what you pay for. It's in a decent neighborhood and the subway is 4 blocks away. Honestly, the first night we walked to the subway - my husband and I felt a bit sketchy, but after familiarizing ourselves with the subway and the neighborhood - we were okay. The front desk staff and bellmen were very friendly, patient and informative. Although we had a great time, we won't be staying there again. Upon arrival our bathroom had hairs on the floor, sink, and bath - obviously not from us. The room reeked of cigarettes (it was suppose to be a non-smoking room). So again, you get what you pay for.

I stayed at this hotel in October 2005 for 2 nights and it had free internet access and the room had a nice shower and bath. It was clean and had 2 double beds. It was a 10 minute walk to the subway but it is one straight walk and you pass by a Chinese cake shop that you can get the most amazing cakes and buns. The room was big too.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Pan American Hotel

Great Value

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel was a great value! The rooms were big, comfortable and clean. Getting into New York was easy and very quick. The Pan American shuttles to and from the airports worked great. On my next trip I to NYC I will stay here again.

Great hotel, great service

from CiaraDaly
Just come back from NYC and stayed here for two nights. After reading some of the reviews on the hotel i was a little bit put off but it was booked and paid for so not much more i could do.... I was delighted that i haden't changed. The hotel was brillant and staff very friendly. Location just 5 minutes walk from a huge shopping centre which houses Macys, Target, Sketchers, Footlocker etc. The rooms was grand, clean good sized bathroom, beds were comfy. The shuttle bus from JFK was a God send!! After spending 7 hours on a flight the last thing i wanted to do was fight for a taxi but one quick phonecall and the bus and driver were waiting for us. The hotel is just 20 minutes from JFK. There's a bar in the hotel to start your night off and a diner just next door which does excellent food. A really good Irish bar is within walking distance also. Defo will stay here again.

Prepare to be (pleasantly) surprised!

from ChipPan
I booked this hotel on Expedia, having snapped up a bargain compared to everything else in the NYC vicinity. I had read reviews beforehand but of course commonsense told me that at this price, I shouldn't expect anything spectaculor. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

The rooms were no-frills but a good size, clean and had the addition of a small fridge and hair-dryer, etc. The room was cleaned promptly everyday when requested.

Situated in Queens, the nearest subway station is about 4 blocks away which equates to abt a 5-10 min walk. One negative is that the hotel is on a busy road, so traffic noise may be a problem when windows are open, but it didn't affect us at all.

The service was generally very good, friendly and helpful. The staff did make an effort with our requests and queries and seemed happy to help. In contrast I have stayed in 4 and 5 star hotels where the service wasn't as good as this one.

Free internet access is offered, although limited to 2 terminals (unless you have a laptop to plug in). A free shuttle bus ferrying you to and from the airport is free and runs on a 24-hr basis. There is also a 250-seater restaurant which I didn't use.

Overall, I thought this hotel was excellent value for money. The location isn't top-notch but being near a subway shouldn't mean too much inconvenience, and midtown was just a 30 min ride away. It is a no-frills hotel but a very good one.

Pan Dirty HOtel

from arnoldboon
Was suppose to stay here from November 25-27. We checked into our room only to be disgusted. We normally do stay in "nicer" hotels, but this was not one of them. The hotel does have some bright spots, the rooms are fairly larger than most Manhattan rooms, and it is cheaper to stay out here. (Short train ride into the city, or $20 cab fare to city) After seeing the room, we decided to check out and was promptly charged $99.00 plus tax. Overall, if I was single and had to stay here, no problem. But I'm not going to subject my family to this.

Disappointed with the PanAmerican

from A TripAdvisor Member
We chose the PanAmerican based upon the reviews commenting on the helpful staff and the hotel's own claims regarding its convenient location. It was our first trip to New York, so we needed assistance and and convenience above all!
Upon our arrival, we noticed the lobby looked tired and dated. No sparkle and shine here!! The room and bathroom were equally disappointing. No refrigerator or ironing board, as promised, and the window was open on a 30 degree night! The mattresses were stiff and uncomfortable and there were no extra blankets. No ice in the machine, either.
As far as staff, neither the bell captain or porter was ever on duty. The front desk staff spoke less than a dozen words to us during two day stay. They didn't confirm our rate or offer a receipt upon checkout.
The one positive note is the free secure parking. But we paid over $70 in cab fare to make a round trip to Manhattan. Not a convenient location at all when it is snowing and you can't walk several blocks to the subway.
There are better options in New York. I hope to find them on our next trip!!

Terrible noise insulation

from A TripAdvisor Member
There is a terrible noise insulation between rooms, so the first night out of two I have "enjoyed" with all conversations and activities (the guys were playing cards till 2 a.m.) The last night was really good: the room next to mine was empty.
Generally, the hotel is not bad.

nice, clean and friendly hotel

from Peugeot307
I stayed here for two nights at the start of November and really enjoyed my stay. The rooms were a good size and clean as well as the bathrooms. The subway was only $2 into manhatten and the free airport bus was very quick and convenient. i would definately stay here again, i stayed in other hotels in manhattan and they didnt compare to this one.

I always stay at the Pan American when in NYC

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is the best bargain you will find for the NYC Metropolitan area. Very convenient, friendly staff and a terrific restaurant. The free shuttle service to/from LGA and JFK is reliable, fast and very courteous. The fly/drive package which allows for free, safe parking is a bargain. Don't waste your money on hotels of less value for $100 more in Manhattan - stay here, feel like family and you'll return again and again.

average hotel good for budget travellers

from rupsdxb
the hotel was quite good and clean. The room that we got for the first two nights was good with a couch and desks and a clean bathroom.
The hotel is in a pretty good location. R train is just 4 blocks away and the q60 bus which is slow is just across the highway.
There are 3 staff in the reception who are not at all cordial. They try to look for charging the guest for any simple excuses.
I really disliked the one staff with a beard.

Overall the hotel is good. But they shud reduce the rm rate.

Pretty good hotel

from beetle
Very clean room, bathroom very clean and neat, no problems with staff. My husband asked for a late check-out as he was flying out at 11.30pm on our check out day and the staff let him check out at 4pm. This was great as it is normally 12pm, and we had paid a special internet rate. Shuttle bus was great, on time and went straight to JFK airport. If you are after somewhere with lots of funky bars and cafes obviously this is not the place, it's about a 30 min subway ride to Soho/Greenwich Village but if you don't mind that then it's an okay place. Stay in lower Manhattan if you want great nightlife/shopping!!
