Well Worth a Visit!
My husband and I stayed at the Newton Hotel in April 2008 and I have to say for the price we payed it was well worth it. Now, I was a little afraid when we arrived at the hotel and there were men working on the footpath right outsided the door, but was pleasantly surprised to NOT hear them from inside the hotel. On arrival at the front desk we were dealt with quickly and efficently by the staff. They even offered us some brochures and information on the city. I had been before a long time ago but this was my husbands first trip to NY. As it was a gift for his 40th birthday I decided to book a Junior Suite and we were not disappointed. We were on the third floor which was nice as the elevator is not the fastest I've ever been in. We carried our own luggage but there are staff at hand to help out if needed. The room itself was very spacious, as you come thru the door you are into a small kitchenette with dining table and chairs should you want to take food back. There is also coffee facilities a fridge and a microwave. (We didn't have any milk tho) Beside this is the bathroom, tiled from ceiling to floor with a fabulously powerful shower! Fresh towels provided by housekeeping everyday, but it has to be said, they are not very big. On from there is the sleeping area, two double beds, bedside table, chest of (6) drawers, a vanity table and a flatscreen tv. All this and still tons of room to move around. And the room was cleaned everyday. If I could fault the room for one thing it would have been the view from our window (onto side of a building.) But then, we didn't visit NY to look out our bedroom window. The hotels location is Upper West Side between 94th and 95th Street. Its about 40 mins from JFK airport by taxi at a flat fare of $45. The hotel will arrange a shuttle bus to take you back to the airport as the journey back is metered in a taxi and could work out expensive. The shuttle bus costs $24 per person. We were 30 seconds walk from the 96st subway that took us anywhere we wanted to go. If subway is the way you want to travel then get urself a subway pass. 7 day pass costs just $24 and as far as I remember it included buses aswell, this can be bought at the station. There is a Duane Reade pharmacy (open 24hrs) right next to the hotel for almost anything you need. And on the other side of the hotel is the Key West Diner where you would prob have breakfast as the hotel has no dining facilities. There is also McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts across the street. Central Park is ten mins walk away. The rest of NY speaks for itself. Shop til you drop, take a bus tour, see a show on Broadway, (which the hotel will gladly help you get tickets for) and in the evening sample some of the cuisine for which it is famous. Make sure to bring your appetite as the portions are not even funny! Carmines, a family restaurant is just a few mins walk to 91st. They have the best Strawberry Shortcake! All in all a fabulous stay, The hotel wasn't the fanciest we have stayed in but more than met our needs and we will stay there when we visit again! Ps: Watch out for Ray, the shoeshine guy, outside the hotel, he has some great stories, but you'll need a five! Enjoy!!!
