I stayed at the Milford Plaza on a trip to New York. The location of the hotel is excellent. Broadway, Time Square all pretty much a walk from the front door. We had a room on the top floor, great for views, even better to be away from the noise of the city! Jsut what you need in a city like New York. Hotel was basic but good, clean, comfortable and accessible with good facilities i.e a bar and shop.
We hired a 'New York Greeter' which showed us around Greenwich village - highly recommend to everyone a New York greeter - we had a fantasic day out.

The location is superb---amidst the heart of New York, yet with suffucient quiet, with handy eating places nearby and easy to find bus, subway and air-port limousine stations. I felt safe. Pleasant to stay.

I've stayed at the Milford twice and I can't understand why it's so cheap...the location is just fantastic, one block away from Time Square and the rooms are really neat. I'm gonna go there again.

Bad service

I booked the hotel online. I booked a room for two people which had two double beds.
On arrival I was told they only had a room with one double bed. This was unacceptable as it was a business colleauge I was staying with. They end up puting a camp style bed in the room.

No apology was made and no refund offered.
I later contacted the company I made the booking through. They in turn contacted the hotel who blatantly lied and said that we had recieved a room with two double beds. I even gave the room number which had confirmed that it was a room with only one double bed. I am a frequent business traveller and I will never be staying thereagain, or using the booking agent who would not honour a partial refund.

I assume this probably will not be published because it will reflect on the booking agent as well (who we will no longer be using).

My wife and I visited NYC to see a show for a quick get-away. We decided on the Milford and had a great time. The hotel was impressive and clean. The staff was very personal. The room was average size for a NYC budget hotel. The location was absolutely perfect. Right in the middle of everything a tourist could want! This is a great choice for a couple escaping for a nice weekend!

We stayed in the Milford Plaza in the heart of Manhattan for the second time at the start of this year. We stayed in New York in Jan 2004, and returned in Jan 2005. The Milford Plaza is great value, it's safe and comfortable and whilst the decor is a little old fashioned, once you adjust it's very comfortable and the best you're likely to get on a budget. I will stay in the Milford Plaza again. But book online-it's far cheaper.

The rooms were way too small, and we booked for 4! We slept in two cramped beds with no room for luggage, much less moving around when we were all in there at the same time. It was clean, pretty, but WAY TO SMALL. The young group next to us kept us awake all night partying. Was not a pleasant experience.

Thanks Joshua for the review you wrote. Four of us stayed at the Milford Plaza. We couldn't get a corner room but, room 1204 was pretty spacious. I liked the Valet service, and the service of your bags being unloaded, and taken to your room. I don't like that one person takes it out of the car, and another takes it to the room so everyone gets in on the tips. Our experience was pleasant. We didn't get attitutude at all.
The security in the lobby is a little S.W.A.T. though. They follow everyone. I know it's a security thing but, I felt like a shoplifter.
Don't eat at the Celebrity restaurant if you want to have any money for shopping. A piece of cheesecake costs nearly $7.00. It wasn't even that good! For a good meal go to Dallas BBQ's. Leaving out of the 8th avenue entrance make a left up to 7th avenue, cross the street , and it's on the right side in the middle of the block. I heard the exercise room was nice, and free. Noon check-out is good for you late sleepers. The walls are thin.

Cold in June

Heard so much about the generous hospitality in New York, that I was quite shocked by the abrubtness of the reception staff when we checked in after our long journey - yes there was a long queue, but a smile and eye contact are not much to ask for.

The room we were provided with was small to say the least and the decor was quite out of this world (not a good thing). The mirror was placed too far away from any electrical socket, so using the hairdryer and the mirror at the same time was impossible.

Despite the fact that we visited in June, it was cold and wet. The air conditioning unit was centrally controlled, and I think at the beginning of any warmer weather (which there had been in the weeks leading up to our trip) the hotel flick the switch to very cold and leave as such until Autumn (The Fall). The air conditioning unit was also very noisy making it difficult to get a good night's sleep, you either wake up with the cold or the noise.

On the positive side, the bathroom was adequate and the shower quite powerful.

Oh and another thing, in the UK all hotels have a kettle in the room for making hot drinks, why doesn't this hotel? Yes there is a coffee shop downstairs, but a hot drink whilst getting dressed in a morning is an essential.

This was, without a doubt, the worst hotel I've stayed at in a long time.

The hotel is badly in need of renovations. It's loud, dirty, and the rooms are small and poorly furnished.

The Milford Plaza bills itself as "the lullaby of Broadway." Without a doubt, this hotel is in a prime location, located nearby to many broadway shows, and within walking distance of the shows to which we had purchased tickets. It's about two blocks from the heart of Times Square.

On the other hand, do you really want to hear "the lullaby of broadway" at 2 a.m.? 3 a.m.? 4 a.m.? Assuredly you will, and it' s not particularly musical or lulling.

We were kept awake until well after 4 a.m. by the loud noise outside and inside the hotel. The hotel is poorly insulated, and you can hear everything your neighbors do, not to mention what people are doing outside the hotel on the sidewalk at 4 a.m.

The room was the dirtiest I've stayed in for over a decade (and including foreign countries).

There are other choices for the money that are far preferable. And, I wish I'd spent an extra $50 a night to stay in either the W or the Marriott Times Square, where I'd have been assured of sleep.

The Shining

The Milford Staff was very consistent at making my stay at the Milford a miserable and debasing experience. The staff was never courteous or respectful to me and my travel companions. They never failed to give us difficulty when we simply want to go to our rooms. They always questioned if we were hotel customers; even after we showed them our hotel key. They would always make us register again at the desk. They would not let us sit in the lobby even when we were paying customers.
The Milford has to learn that anal retentiveness is not conducive to customer satisfaction.

Needs a renovation

from richiehayes2000
Location - Excellent. Block from times square and actually attached to the buildings making up Schubert Theater, but the hotel needs closing for 3 months for an overhaul. Rooms are worn out and depressed, with 70's decor now looking dated. This hotel has the potential to be superb, but just needs the effort. Don't let you put you off tough - if sightseeing is your aim, this is the place to stay. Just dont get a room next to the elevator shaft - seriously. Ask not be near an elevator. 1950's elevators sound like a cross American AMTRAK. 'Loud' is not the word.

There are much better options!

Affordable, but this hotel is definitely past its prime! The rooms are dark and shabby and the walls are so thin you can hear every word spoken (or shouted) in the adjacent rooms. We woke at 4 AM to an argument in the next room that went on for an hour. The location is close to the theaters but there is not much else of interest. You'll just be joining the swarms of tourists gaping at the neon signs. Overall, it'll suffice in a pinch, but only if you must be in this neighborhood and don't plan on spending much time in the room.

The Unlullaby of 8th Ave

My wife and I decided to vacation in Manhattan, and I thought a great place to stay was the Milford Plaza. My wife and I had both grown up watching the commercials and it always seemed like a nice place. I should have remembered those commercials haven't changed in 20 years!! The hotel was okay at best, and the staff was definetly not singing and dancing when we walked in. The room was dirty and dingy and was the size of a shoebox and smelled liek a 30 year old ashtray. I would not recommend this hotel unless you need a cheap place in Time Square to sleep, although that was even hard due to the awful smell.

Great Hotel, Great Value

I stayed at the Milford Plaza for 7 nights in May 2003. If you are going to New York to see shows, this hotel is a great option. The location of the hotel is amazing! Just one block from Times Square and there are theatres literally right around the corner. Our room was very clean, and a decent size for what you often find in New York. The check-in staff, housekeeping, and tourist booth staff were all very friendly. The Deli joined to the hotel was great - it was called Celebrity Deli and I actually saw a celebrity there!!I felt very safe, as you had to show your room key - day or night - to enter the hotel.I would stay there again and recommend it to my friends and family. What you get is wonderful for the price (especially when you consider the location and prices of other hotels in the area).

A fine place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
Great location, nice rooms and clean, helpfull staff, excellent maidservice and for a very reasonable price. The rooms are small yet cosy, especially considering that when you're in New York, you hope to see as little of your hotelroom as possible. But at the times when you are present the service will be excellent. Stayed there during the summer of 2001.

A Nice Surprise!

We stayed here on a trip to NYC and were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were not very expensive at all and were very clean and comfortable. The location was great and it was very easy to drive to. We would stay there again.

Use the subway! May seem daunting at first but staff are very helpful -just ask. Buy a subway card a great way to see New York and cheap too!
