From the elevator (1 of 2)which was broken for over a week, to the other equipment which couldn't be fixed, to the lack of room amenities, to the lack of interest of the management, to the discourtesy of the staff in hogging the only operating elevator, to the staff person using the ice machine at 7am for 20 minutes, making no effort to diminish the racket, to the higher prices than published - the whole stay was pretty much a hotel bummer. This place is way overrated.
Great room & good price

I've stayed at the Lucerne before and I like the location and excellent staff. I stay in the city every year in March to catch some shows at the Beacon and the staff does a great job to make my stay enjoyable.

This was the fourth time I'd stayed in the Lucerne, and as always, the service was great, the room was comfortable, and the food in Nice Matin was a joy. I'll be back.

We love staying at the hotel. The location is great for local shopping and eating. I can always get a cab and the train station is close. My daughter is in school at Columbia; access to the school is easy. We have walked on nice days.
We always stay in a king suite and have often joked that we would buy the unit if we could, complete with a small sitting room and kitchenette (close to Zabar's)

We chose the hotel because our old standby, the Mayflower, has closed, and our son's family lives nearby. Rooms are not spacious, but nicely done. Attached restaurant is wonderful.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Lucerne Hotel

What an incredible experience!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Welcome to New York City! Arguably the worlds most vibrant & sprawling metropolis, I've traveled a lot and was really pleased with the service at this hotel. My husband says he'd go back in a heart beat & he's hard to please. The location is great! Tourists pack the streets, theaters, restaurants & bars. Whether By Foot, Cab Or Subway, All Of Manhattan Is Only Minutes Away From This Hotel, What an incredible experience!

The Lucerne is a nice find!

from ChipSet
Stayed here with wife + 2 daughters for six nights over New Year's (double-double room - cozy but adequate). The Lucerne met all our needs nicely. It was very clean and well-maintained, and the staff always helpful & pleasant. The crosstown bus is across the street and the 1/9 subway down the block at Broadway, 15 minutes to Times Square door to door. Room had TV, coffee maker, hairdryer. A 24-hour drugstore across the street took care of emergency needs (like batteries, band-aids). Note that the continental breakfast mentioned in other reviews is no longer offered, apparently that was only while their restaurant was being renovated. But for simple & cheap breakfast there's a bagel shop on the opposite corner.

Superb service at the Lucerne

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Lucerne was an excellent hotel for its price. The Suite we had was very clean, well-appointed, comfortable. All staff from front desk to housekeeping were so nice that we couldn't quite believe we were in NY, especially compared to the service we have received from employees at other Manhattan hotels. They accommodated any requests we had, and made the stay very enjoyable. No complaints at all!

Very good service

from Melissa77797
We've stayed in two other NYC hotels of this type (the Beacon, the Excelsior) and this was the best. It's possible the reason is that we had a large room (a queen suite) -- I see that other respondents who complained about the hotel did not -- but what I found outstanding was the service. Front desk people, doormen and bellmen were all very helpful. At the two other hotels, I was not always able to find help when dropping off luggage before parking; at the Lucerne, it was never a problem (and the drop-off space always seemed to be open, even though the hotel was full). The other hotels also did not have a full-time concierge, while the Lucerne does. Gunter made us reservations for dinner at a new restaurant across the street that was excellent.
Location is great as well.

Lucerne Hotel met all expectations

from A TripAdvisor Member
I recently came to NYC to run the NCY Marathon. After last year's experience with having a teeny tiny room in Times Square, I did an extensive amount of on-line research as to where to stay. Reviews from past guests of the Lucerne were very positive, so booked a weeks stay. All my expectations were more than met. Cleanliness is very important to me, Lucerne was "squeeky" clean. Room quite, roomy, loved being in the upper West Side neighborhood. Staff friendly and very helpfull arranging taxi's and airport service. On a return to NYC, Lucerne will get my business.

I didn't know that the description "boutique" meant absolutely no frills. I will admit the location is very good especially if you want to be near Central Park; it's a nice area and the rooms are exceptionally clean.

Everything else is downhill. The room is like a closet; the hallways are very stuffy; there is no gift shop for toiletries; no in-room coffee (you have to go to a toni restaurant next door for a cup of coffee or tea) unless you want to spend $10.

Consider that for the same $250/night you could be in a Hawaii Resort with all meals and amenities included with the warm Pacifc as your view.

Staff was fine and polite.

good value for NYC but nothing to rave about

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having read some of the over-rated reviewer's comments I can only imagine they've stayed in dumps or chain hotels. For NY this is definitely good value, and the location is great for upper west side off Broadway (walking distance to Zabar's, Starbucks, great hotels on Amsterdam Ave. etc) good access to subway (straight shot downtown on the 1) and cross-town bus. BUT, as far as staying in a room with charm or any level of luxe whatsoever, this is not the place. Yes the staff are pleasant and helpful, but I felt the interior rooms were small, drab, somber and dreary. I had to request a mini-fridge to be brought up since there was none. I saw a corner room which let in lots of light so was bright and cheery, much larger than the regular interior queen rooms. If it were anywhere else than NYC this would classify as chain hotel standards, nothing to rave about.

Amazing Hotel, Amazing Staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
We've stayed in many hotels in New York, but this is by far the best!

Our room was a standard queen room at the normal rate and despite what was claimed by another reviewer are a great size. With table and chairs, big bed, tv cabinet with drawers and closet for clothes. The bathrooms are clean and a good size. My parents room was even bigger, as it was on the end of the hotel. Compared to other hotels such as the Empire (which had rooms with a bed and nothing else) there is no way this rooms can be classed as small!

But what made the stay the best is the staff. Gunther the concierge got in touch with us before our stay by email and made every effort to make this stay one of a lifetime. My parents came with us and my mum and I are disabled, and the staff did everything they could to help. Gunther even got a bottle of wine specially from California from the Winery itself - it wasn't available in the shops!

The room service was great! The portions for us Englanders was amazing and we ended up sharing a meal between us!

We will definitely be staying there again. Excellent!

sleeping in a closet

To get straight to the point it was the smallest room I have ever seen, let alone pay for! My boyfriend and I didn't even have any floor space to place our overnight bag. DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE PRICE!

Location YES, room NO

from A TripAdvisor Member
The reviews and ratings of this hotel seem a little over the top based on my stay there recently. The location is of course very good, but my "suite" was very bare, small, with quite basic furnishings and a view of the windows and walls of the rooms 6 feet across the alley. No mini bar but they do have 24 hr room service, which was ok food. If you expect a reasonably good room in a great location for your money, you will be happy.

Top Local Tips for New York City

Use it! Buy yourself a Metro card (it'll work on both the subway and bus) and use it. New York has really got the best public transportation system going. It's safe, clean and everyone is friendly and more than willing to point you toward the right train or bus. If I had had my wits about me I would have purchased one of the unlimited rides for 7-days cards. As it was, I rode public transportation everywhere, for the enitre 9 days. There was nowhere it wouldn't take me.

Great city! Take good walking shoes, buy the subway day pass, and find a hotel outside the craziness of Times Square. New York isn't that big geographically, so it won't take long to get back to your hotel and you'll be glad you got away from the zoo!

nice matin - not that great save your money, or at least make an informed decision, by taking a walk just one short block up amsterdam from the hotel.
