Historical Traveller Reviews of Jumeirah Essex House Hotel
Too many better options in NY
from KurtBoston_MA
Very surprised to read other reviews listed here. Travel to NY very frequently and was very disappointed in this Hotel. Yeah, it's on the Park but most rooms don't face it and those that do face the Park are closet size. Actually changed rooms 4 times (which I never do). Hotel is far too expensive not to have a decent room. Front desk clerk was downright rude and nasty. Hotel lobby is busier than Grand Central Station. Many New Yorkers use lobby to cross from 59th to 58th Street.. Creates chaotic, unwelcoming atmosphere. Hotel also nickels and dimes you for everything. $10 pp to use fitness center, $10 to have wine glasses brought to room, huge phone and internet fee, etc.
Only highlight was restaurant and lounge atmosphere. That's it.
Magnificent and cozy.

Lovely, centric, cozy luxurious hotel. It's quite expensive but worth it. Located right in front of Central Park. The restaurant is superb. The rooms are the top of the top. And the sheets... well... delicious. One of the best hotels I've ever stayed at.
Awesome location reasonable price very comfortable bed

The Essex House is in an awesome location right on Central Park. Our room was the basic room with a park view. The room wasn't huge but more than sufficient. The room had a great view of the park being directly across the street. The heavenly bed was the best bed I've ever slept on. I thought my bed at home was good but the heavenly bed was better. The shower had a nice double shower head system that worked great. The staff was always friendly and helpful. There were a couple of minor down sides of the room. The paint above the shower was peeling as was some wall paper in the bathroom. Also, the first night, there was a hole in one of the sheets. The Essex House overall was great and I would definitely stay there again.
Our Favorite Hotel in NYC!

My husband and I stayed at the St. Regis Club at the Essex house for 4 nights last week and what a wonderful time we had. We were upgraded to a wonderfully appointed suite because of our Starwood Gold Preferred membership. Our bed was so comfortable and I wanted to take it home, as well as the shower. However, the staff is absolutely superd. Our housekeeper Daisy was a gem, she made sure our suite was perfect. She is a real asset to the hotel. Nina, the concierge was absolutely unrelenting in her pursuit to get us reservations at Elaines and Babbo, and she succeeded! She also made some wonderful recommendations to some other restaurants. I wish all concierge's were as diligent and kind as she was. To sum it up, we had a great trip, and this will be the only hotel we stay at for all future New York City trips.
Best Visit Ever

We stayed at the St. Regis Club part of the Essex House. I wanted a minimum 350 sq ft room, which is pricy in NYC. $449/nite; 9/10/04- 9/12/04. We were upgraded to the Astor Suite; Park View, 600+sq ft. Unbelievable! I felt like Humphrey Bogart was going to walk in carrying the Maltese Falcon. Perfect condition, beautifully decorated in muted colors; an actual apartment with dining room table at one end of the Living Room. Quiet yet across from Central Park where there are many free activities. It was a pleasant change from Times Sq. where we usually stay.
Loved the Essex House.

Stayed at the Westin Essex House Labor Day weekend (9/3-9/6) with my 5 year old daughter. Truly wonderful experience. The park view was fantastic. I would definetely recommend getting one. We were on the 11th floor and obtained good rates from Starwood website on their "Buy 2 Nights Get One Night Free" promotion. Well worth every penny. Nice size room, well decorated and clean. Staff, conceirge were all very nice and helpful. My daugher loves Central park, as do I, so the location was perfect us. For everything else we made great use of the subway station located at 57th and 7th. Saw Beauty and the Beast one night, did Circle Line another night, carriage ride around the park. You are also down the street from Columbus Circle/Time Warner building. Lots of stores to check out, especially the Whole Foods Market. We mainly ate out, so I can't comment on room service or hotel restaurants. The bed is truly heavenly, as is the shower. I plan on returning and staying at the Essex around winter holiday.

So great! I liked the location, it made everything easy to walk. It was quiet. Use the South entrance to avoid the smell of horse droppings.
Enjoyed The Essex House

My husband and I and our 2 teenage boys stayed at the Essex House July 31-Aug 3 2004. As SPG members we were upgraded to the St Regis level (higher floors of the hotel). The room was magnificent - a suite with a great view of Central Park. The downside was that it only had 1 bed (the couch didn't pull out). I called for rollaways, which then crowded the room. The front desk promised to take care of it the next day if we would please leave our bags packed. Well, like an episode of "While You Were Out" they moved us to an even larger suite in the Westin level (still with a park view) while we were out sight seeing. Both of the rooms we were in were clean and large. The staff was very professional and helpful, especially the doormen/bellhops. I didn't feel I got good service from the concierge, however. I asked her if there were any family-friendly restaurants in the area. She responded yes (very long pause). I had to then ask what they might be, then where they were! I didn't think I needed to play 20 questions. The location can't be beat. Right across the street from Central Park, close enough to Times Square and the theaters to walk - but not nearly as crowded or noisy. It was easy to pick up the double decker bus tour across the street, as well.
Charming and reasonably priced!

My husband and I just returned from our trip to New York and we enjoyed everything about the lovely Art Deco Essex House. The room was clean, the bed very comfortable, the staff was friendly and we had an excellent view of Central Park! The location is perfect for walking around mid town and very close to the best shopping in New York. We would definitely stay there again, and consider it a New York staple.
Great hotel! Loved it!

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Essex House in late July when we went to NYC for a wedding. We picked the hotel because of its location (fabulous) and its reputation. We were not at all disappointed. Our whole stay was great, from the Heavenly Bed in our room to the various hotel services we acessed. We upgraded to a room with a view of the Park, and I would highly recommend that. The concierge desk was very helpful in arranging limo service for us for a function we attended, and the price was reasonable by big city standards. The bar and restaurants in the hotel are all first rate and there are many great places to dine within a five minute walk of the hotel. I could go on and on, but let me conclude by saying that we were completely pleased and on our next visit to New York we will definitely be staying at the Essex House.
Top Local Tips for New York City
Top of the rock
Sunset from Top Of The Rock was wonderful - a must!
Ellis Island
Get there early and be ready to stand. You wait for the ferry, which only comes every 45 minutes. If there's a line, you might not make it onto the ferry at the dock and will wait for the next one. We spent more time standing in line than we did touring Ellis Island. Wear sensible shoes and if it's winter, bundle up! We saw lots of silly girls in spiked heels and shearling jackets. You look cute, but cold and in pain. Battery park is right off the water and the wind is brutal.
fun lunch in central park
If you are around Central Park South, there is a Whole Foods Market in the Time Warner building that has all kinds of reasonably priced delecious goodies for lunch - pick up a sandwich, salad, sushi - whatever, and go across the street to the park and have an al fresco "people watching" lunch on the cheap.....
