Great roofdeck with view of the Empire State Building. Huge room on penthouse level, and there was a delicious continental breakfast. Also, the staff was incredible friendly, specifically George at the front desk. One of the best Manhattan hotels I've stayed in.
Very conviently located

Very conviently located. Clean and neat. Very helpful and knowlegeable staff. Good restaurants within walking distance.
Clean and Quiet, but a little too secluded

This hotel was small with no particular extras. The rooms are a decent size and well worth the money. The restaurant was closed when we were there, which forced us to go out when we didn't want to out and about. The neighbourhood was off the beaten path and a little scary. The block was kind of dark and littered with trash and homeless people sleeping along the sidewalks. If this hotel was in a better location, I would up the rating to at least 7. I did not like being so far away from everything. If you are looking for a clean hotel that is comfortable with nice rooms and a quiet atmosphere and you don't mind being in a secluded area, then this is your hotel.
Reasonable Value

I spent 4 nights at this property last May and found the hotel to be a reasonable value. On the plus side, it is convenient to Herald Sq and the subway. The lobby was pleasant and the staff friendly. The breakfast bar was decent with good coffee and bagels. I also enjoyed the roof terrace. On the minus side, I had to change rooms due to a non-functioning a/c and was given another room with no a/c at all. Since it was quite warm and the street noise was a problem with the windows open I asked for another room which had a somewhat functional a/c. I should mention that this problem is not unique to this hotel. In my experience, many NYC hotels, even some of the more costly ones have poor ventilation and cooling systems.
Excellent value for money

If coming to New York for a weekend break I can certainly recommend the Hotel Metro. Located in Midtown it is just a stroll away from the subway and Macy's. The rooftop bar is a great place to relax and offers views of the Empire State Building. Although not luxurious the rooms are clean and comfortable and also surprisingly spacious in comparsion with othe New York hotels in this price bracket. The staff are knowledge and friendly. Guests can help themselves to free tea and coffee all day from the library which offers a welcome respite after a hard day shopping. Overall excellent value for money.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Metro

This was my first stay in New York and I was looking for a hotel that was good value and in a good location. The Metro provided both of these perfectly. The rooms were clean, the staff helpful and it was surprisingly quiet given the location.

The simple buffet breakfast is included in the price and there is a great bar/restaurant adjoining.

I will be staying here again on my next trip.

Fab Location - ideal hotel for the NY virgin on a budget

Stayed here at the end of Februayr and had a great time. Took advice to request a non-smoking room which was at the back and very quiet - we unplugged the fridge. Breakfast was a bonus. Tea/coffee available all day was good. Fantastic location. Very clean room of good size. Great hotel for the money.

t stay here again

I attended a day and a half conference in New York City recently and stayed two nights at the Hotel Metro. Given the great reviews and the suggestion from the conference organizers, I thought it was a good choice. The location was great and well within walking distance of the conference and the Empire State Building. However, the room was tiny and of Days Inn quality. The carpet was dirty and the building smelled of cigarette smoke ( I know people on the east coast smoke in the buildings unlike the L.A. area), but it was bothersome. I also didn't see any rampsfor people who use wheelchairs or scooters and the building and elevators would not accomodate a person with a disability easily. Staff was friendly enough and had good ideas about what shows to see and things to do while in the city. This hotel would not be my choice for my next trip to NYC and oh, I haven't slept on box springs in twenty five years!

Travelers beware!

from sldue
Upon arrival the staff was really rude - they mixed up our room reservation - and threatened to throw the three of us (mom and sister and I) out onto the street. The manager finally gave us a room with 2 twin beds. Sleeping in the crack of 2 twin beds pushed together was not fun, especially after long days in NYC.The room was very TINY. The bathroom was microscopic. 2 people could not stand in it at the same time. The room was very loud and we could hear everyone coming and going in the hallway all night long (2 am - 8 am).Would not stay here again.... ever

Just what was required

The advice here was one of the reasons I chose the Metro and I wasn't disappointed. Great location, room was fine, free coffee and continental breakfast. I didn't have occasion to really talk with the staff that much, but the servers in breakfast always said hello and were friendly.

Given the location there is bound to be some noise off the streets, and if the heater or fridge in to room bother you, you can unplug them,

Presentation of the room and bathroom, tidiness etc. was excellent - well cleaned and tidied.

I would recomend this to anyone on a budget, good value and worth returning to.

Would stay again

We stayed here in March 2002 thought the hotel was great. Some of the staff could have been slightly more helpful. The location is excellent in between broadway and 5th Ave, just round the corner literally from The Empire State Building.

Would stay there again

It was far better than we were expecting

from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked a trip to NY for my wife, myself and brother and sister-in-laws. It was a deal with BA. We didn't know what to expect really, but the Metro Hotel was far more than we had expected. Very clean, polite staff and the room was nice too, the bed was extremely comfortable. The complimentary continental breakfast was very good, but on the down side there wasn't enough seating in the breakfast room so you would either have to go back to your room or sit in the lobby. The roof top terrace was brill got lots of good pictures from there of the ESB which is located less than 5 min walk away as is Masys!! Women and shopping!! Any way Metro Brilliant. One piece of advice... If your going to NY stay at the Metro, good Value for money.

highly recommended

Stayed here for four nights in april and could not fault the hotel in any way. Staff were friendly, rooms clean and the free breakfast was excellent. A must for any visitor is the roof terrace, even if the bar is not open you must venture up for the best view of the empire state building you will find in manhattan. Also highly reccomended is the metro grill next door.

A hidden jewel

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed at the Metro Hotel just after Christmas in a parlour suite with a fantastic view of the Empire State Building. We could not believe that this was a three star hotel as it warranted more. The complimentary breakfast was an added bonus. The hotel is in a great position tucked away in a side street but within walking distance to Macy's, the Empire State Building and Times Square. This was our first time in New York and we would not hesitate to go back to this hotel.

Great Service

Stayed at the Metro in Sept 03 on our first trip to NY. Excellent midtown location just one block from Macys, with very helpful and pleasant staff. Great value for the 5 nights we stayed. Roof top terrace on 12th floor is a must, as it's in the next street to the Empire State so you look straight up at it from the terrace. Room was good sized double with well appointed bathroom and more TV channels than you've ever seen. Breakfast room is excellent with enough bagels, muffins, jucies etc to fill you for the day and a constant, "free" supply of coffee available all day. Will certainly use the Metro in future. (Don't miss the revolving cocktail bar on 49th floor of Time Square Marriot Hotel too!)
