The location of the hotel is perfect to see all the sights of new york, but the hotel itself was far from perfect. In our room the carpet was soaking wet there was mold around the windows, in the bathroom the mold was around the bath and sink. We was woken up every morning at 7.30am with the sound of drilling and banging(not what you want when you are on holiday). There was no cocktail bar or restaurant open like advertised in the brochure. Would not recommend.

If you are going to stay in a hotel in midtown Manhattan, you shouldn't expect it to be cheap. I understand that. But if I am going to spend $200/night for a room, I want one that doesn't have mold in the bathroom, a shower that doesn't drain well, and a host of other problems. They gave us a discount for our trouble but I would have rather had value for my dollar. I've stayed in much better kept motels.

The first year I went to the Howard Johnson it was a really plesant experience. I was allowed to use my teacher discount and was able to enjoy all the amenities. I was impressed with the service and the quality so much that I made reservations again the following year. Thank you for providing consistent quality service it definitely makes a difference in who I choose the next I come into the city.

My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful time at your hotel. We have recommended it since our visit. It was so central to all that we wanted to see. Plenty of restaurants, sights and entertainment near hand.

Brilliant for location

Our family stayed for 4 days during a trip to the US last year, the hotel having been recommended by friends who had stayed previously. We found it brilliant for location and friendly staff and value for money. The only possible downfall was the general decor, although we are sure when we return, as we will, the Plaza will have been redecorated. (incidently we have recommended the Howard Johnson Plaze to other friends who have booked a short stay in november) keep up the good work.

Pleasantly surprised

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights at the end of September. I was in New York for a work conference and the hotel was excellently located just two blocks over from the venue. I was coming to New York at short notice and had looked for a standard no-trims hotel for less than USD 300. I couldn't find anything that didn't look roach infested so settled with paying USD 385 per night at the Hampton Inn. This is way too much for this hotel (NY's high hotel prices notwithstanding) but at the same time I was getting desperate and I ended up being pleasantly surprised. The common areas of the hotel were clean and welcoming enough, the staff were extremely polite, friendly and helpful, the room was huge with a super comfortable bed, super clean bathroom (with nice shower/bath) and really good facilities for working - a big desk with wireless internet access. I had a very nice stay there. The only draw back was the breakfast - the breakfast room is overlit - glaringly bright lights and the food selection is pretty abismal. Plastic plates and knives and forks add to the tackiness - not to mention being extremely environmentally unfriendly!

Jusr returned from a visit at this hotel. Hotel is completely renovated with clean comfortable rooms. Good breakfast and great location. Paid $225 a night AAA rate. Just wish it had a pool/hot-tub to relax sore legs from walking around NYC.

Although in September 2005, the rates are no longer as inexpensive as they were in August, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hampton Inn. The room was very nicely furnished with a flat screen TV, nice modern furniture and was quite large for NYC. The bathroom had marble counters but was small. The bed was extremely comfortable. The room was quiet with no street noise or noise from other guests. The staff was pleasant and efficient. The free breakfast was very impressive with scrambled eggs, bacon, fresh fruit, as well as the usual continental offerings. It was nice to grab a quick breakfast and be off for a day of sightseeing. The location is good. You're a few short blocks from the heart of Times Square. The concierge recommended Ciro Trattoria for dinner. It was excellent. Would recommend this hotel to anyone.

All in all very nice hotel..in the last throws of being renovated but that didn't affect our stay at all..rooms are excellent and are clean..high speed ADSL complimentry if u have a laptop with u is a bonus too..(stayed in a Business King at £87 per night, per room)..service can't be faulted..friendly & professional..even when I got drunk and locked us out of our room!
Breakfast included is typically American but enough choice for all..no lunch or dinner at the time but ur in New York..eat out!
Location is perfect with Times Square, Theatre District etc just a few blocks away..
getting there: get an airport shuttle bus from the airport (we went from La Guardia $12 dollar each one way or get roundtrip for $21 straight to the hotel doors)

We stayed at what used to be the Ho Jo's Plaza and is now a Hampton Inn from August 9-11. After reading some of the reviews I was skeptical about the hotel. I only booked there because I needed two beds for the four of us. The price was right at $159 a night so I booked it thinking we wouldn't spend much time in the hotel anyway. I was so pleasantly surprised to arrive at a very clean hotel. The whole stay from start to finish was great. The staff was friendly and helpful. I requested a renovated room, but didn't need to because they are all now renovated. The room was large (for NYC standards) with two very comfortable queen beds (hard to find in NYC) and very nicely decorated. The location of the hotel was also great... close to Times Square, many of the theatres and one block from the subway. Another big plus: free breakfast and very reasonable parking rates ($24 a night). The breakfast was far better than the typical continental breakfast with some hot food, fresh fruit, and a nice selection of other items. Kids under 18 (which I had two of) also stayed free. This place was such a bargain... I'd stay there again in a New York minute.

Last week we enjoyed a 5-night stay at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel (which is now a Hampton Inn, as we discovered when we arrived, though it was still listed as the former when we made our reservation about a month earlier.) We were extremely pleased with our experience at this hotel. Our room was newly renovated, pristine, and modern, as were the lobby, hallways and breakfast room. A bit of hammering could be heard on some mornings, and on our last morning the elevators were being worked on, but otherwise there were no visible signs of ongoing renovation work. An included breakfast was available each morning, with a very good selection of hot and cold foods and drinks. The location of the hotel is great -- easy walking distance to Broadway, Times Square, Central Park, and lots of restaurants. We would definitely choose this hotel again if the price stays affordable!
No Longer Hojo...this is a GREAT Hampton Inn!

Wow. And again, wow. What a difference a few weeks apparently makes.
I checked into the hotel on Monday afternoon, August 8th. The new lobby is absolutely beautiful. They are still completing a few touches, but it's mostly done. The only thing that I saw that still needed work was the wallpaper around the elevators.
Check-in was pleasant. The clerks aren't the smiling sort, but they are efficient and businesslike. I checked in at quarter to three, and my room was ready.
I went on upstairs. 8th floor, rear of the building. My god, these rooms are HUGE by New York City standards. The room fashions were very nice. There is a coffeemaker w/coffee and tea, a nice new flat screen (not plasma, just a big TV with a nice flat screen), and even a nice new little bed tray. The furnishings were all brand new. The beds were absolutely sumptuous; good mattress, sheets, faux suede comforter, and 3 pillows on each of the 2 queen beds. There really is no view to speak of; there is a construction site on 52nd behind the hotel, and there is a bit of afternoon construction noise...but it was done by 5. And after that, the room was bilssfully quiet. The a/c fan has 3 speeds...the highest makes for wonderful white noise.
The bathroom is a tad small, but it's still also very nice and pleasantly new. It was well-equipped, and the new Hampton toiletries are very good; lightly scented and fresh.
The hotel's breakfast is extended continental and one of the best I've ever seen of this type. There was a great selection of breads and pastries, fresh fruit, eggs, canadian bacon, and hot (great tasting!) biscuits. There were 2 attendants, and they were very friendly and helpful. The coffee is available right outside the breakfast room 24/7, along with hot water and a selection of Bigelow teas.
The hotel has a small fitness center with new equipment. There's no (well, at least I didn't see one...) business center, but there is free high-speed wired internet in the rooms and wireless in the lobby and the breakfast room.
The location is great. It's a hop, skip, and a jump (just 8 short blocks) to Columbus Circle and the SW corner of the Park, and it's literally right on the NW edge of the theater district; just 10 short blocks north of Times Square.
I paid $187/night on a State Government Employee rate; I would have been just as pleased with the hotel's regular rates, just over $200. It's a steal by New York City standards.
I will definitely make this my New York home away from home...no hesitation!

Definitely worth staying

After all of the bad reviews it was with trepidation that we arrived at the HOJO on 8th Avenue. We shouldn't have worried. Most of the renovation is now complete. The rooms are imaculate, lovely bedding and very comfortable. The corridors still need renovation, but that is only cosmetic. The front foyer was almost complete and will be lovely when finished.
As an added bonus, the Hilton Group took over the hotel during our stay. It is now a Hampton Inn with the added bonus of a breakfast room, 24 hour beverage facilities, coffee machine in the room, hairdryer etc.
We would have no hesitation in returning.

After reading the reviews of the other users we were a little bit apprehensive about going here. Let me tell you, it would have been a mistake if we hadn't. From the moment we checked in our experience was met with a warm friendly smile. Although they were working on a complete overhaul of the building, everyone working there made it a point to not get in the way of any of the guests. The rooms were immaculate and an Ikea heaven!!! The location couldn't be beat either. If you are going to New York to go to shows and want to be a few (4 or 5) blocks away from Time Square, this is the place to stay!!!
The only thing I would watch out for is the elevator on the right...it sometimes jumps when going down!

Top Local Tips for New York City
Check show times! Some theaters have moved to an earlier start time on shows during the week. Make sure you check your start times so that you don't arrive late!
Subway I would recommend the E train for accessing this hotel from JFK. Take the Air Train from the airport to Jamaica Station and from there the E directly into Manhattan. Get off at the 50th Street station. It should take about an hour and cost $7 each way. Be aware of which trains are local and which are express.
