I was booked at the hotel (through their own website) and had guaranteed the reservation on my credit card. Was told that they had over booked and at 1am at night (after a 16 hour flight) was offered some crappy hotel 40 minutes away. Decided to cancel the reservation and stayed with a friend. WILL NEVER EVER STAY HERE.

We stayed there last week for 4 nights
We travel a lot and we must say this was the worst hotel we ever stayed in the room was basic noise was terrible bar/restaurant very average price was 2500us for 4 nights ex food /drink do not stay there.

The Grand Hyatt had decent service, ample-sized rooms, and tolerable complimentary hygiene products. I would have preferred different room decor, but considering we stayed for around $100/night (in May 2003) I'm not going to complain. Would definitely return to this hotel in the future.

Great Hotel with a Great Location

We stayed there July 25-28, 2003. We were assigned to one room that was too dark (17th Floor), so we asked for another and it was MUCH better and nicer (19th Floor). The first room didn't have a bathtub but the second did--just be aware of the differences in rooms and request accordingly.
The room didn't have a hair dryer, but the concierge sent one up for me, so all was good.
We won the rate of $75 a night on Priceline, so this room was definitely worth the rate. Of course, if I paid $200 a night I would expect much more--such as a coffee maker and mints on my pillow!

Escalator

Great security at the door, always smiling NYC police officers. When you arrive inside the entrance, different story. The male employee that stands beside the escalator, always in my way. He definitely had an interest in me, back to the NYC officers.
t waste you money on the grand hyatt

Don't waste your money here. Having spent 6 weeks over 3 different visits, I am completely disappointed in this property. The rooms are dated, the last room I stayed in smelled moldy and all 3 were extreamly noisy. Bathroom light switches in two of my rooms didn't work half the time. Service in general, other than from the front desk, was terrible and they could care less.
After two calls to get my room service dinner order correct, I was left without any silverware. When I called down to request utensils, I was told "we are very busy and it will be 15 minutes, sorry." Just incompetent service!
Also, don't accidentally leave anything behind in your room, it will disappear. It took me 1.5 weeks to find someone who was actually willing to do something, and that was just filing a report.
I'm sorry I wasted my time and money. Go to the Benjamin for a great place to stay.

Pleasantly surprised

I ended up at the Grand Hyatt through a bid of $79.00 on Priceline for one night in early July. Having read the reviews of this hotel I was really kind of worried about staying there. I have to say though, that I was pleasantly surprised. The lobby, as many have written, is spectacular. The service at check in was fine. I got in about 7PM and there was no line. The desk clerk wasn't especially pleasant but she was fine, and hey, this is NYC after all. My room was on the 30th floor. It was an iternal room with no view to speak of, but it was a decent enough size for one. The room was clean, the bathroom was large and the ammeneties were very nice. The decor was a bit dated but not as bad as i might have expected based on other reviews. There was a decent TV in the room as well as a fax machine. The hotel has a nice fitness center and a business center. The 30th floor evidently caters to business travelers as there was a room that one could use as an office to do work or meet with clients. Check out was a breeze. The location is first rate. All in all, i think people re being unnecessarily hard on this hotel and I for one would happily stay there again. Not quite 4 stars, but a solid 3.

We stayed there with a tour group and I don't know of one person that was satisfied with this hotel, especially for the money we paid for it!
We had 4 people in each room, each of us paying 200 a night, and could not get enough wash cloths and they took one of our trash cans away because they were booked up! Then the other trash can was not even emptied at all. The bathrooms were mildewed in betweed the tiles and around the doors, and the air conditioning hardly worked at all. I also would never recommend it to anyone. I agree with others that wrote in, it is NOT a 4-star hotel!

Not a 4 star hotel!

I got such agreat deal on Priceline for my last NYC hotel that I tried again. I thought.. "Can't miss with a 4-star rating." WRONG. Although the lobby is impressive, the Grand Hyatt's room was run down, with no coffee maker, snack bar, phone book, or table and chair! For three days the staff never responded to my requests for furniture. The front desk actually lied to me and said that if you have a room with two double beds, you don't get a table and chair!

I was skeptical after reading the reviews about this hotel, so I called the M-O-D and let him know my concerns ahead of time, he admitted the rooms need re-modeling (which will be in Aug 2003) but they are clean. They put us up on the 34th floor facing the Chrysler building. It was CLEAN and QUIET. We were very pleased. Couldn't ask for better service or location. They lobby was beutiful. I would stay again!
Not as bad as reviews lead you to believe

After reading the reviews about the Grand Hyatt, we were quite nervous to stay there. HOWEVER...this hotel is not bad at all. Our first night they put us on the 24th floor, which was noisy. The following morning I asked to be moved and they moved us to the 33rd floor and we had a GREAT stay. The staff was outstanding (better than the Waldorf Astoria staff). The location was unbeatable. After being moved to the 33rd floor, we could not hear street noise nor neighbor noise. Don't be fooled by the other bad reviews. Just know how to request a good room. We paid $100 from Priceline. Not bad for $100 bucks a night. They even let us check in at 7am (hours before normal check in).Things to know: ask for a room without a connecting door ask for a room on the 31st or higher floor (the nicer floors)
Not as Grand as Expected

We visited there in Jan 03. My 1st visit to NY. Lobby is very impressive especially from the 2nd level. There is a nice seating area there in the lobby. New restaurant/bar being completed upstairs.There was a lot of banging in the lobby. Our room was on the Club level. Club level people use a different set of elevators and a key and we kept having problems with our room keys in the elevator. The Club level did a nice spread everyday for its guests. Our view was real good. We were looking at the Chrysler building on a high floor. Our room was a decent size and average, seen better. We went down to the restaurant by the lobby for breakfast and the heat was on 100. We were'nt able to stay and eat there so we walked to a local place down the street which was great(some old diner) Concierge was helpful in making dinner decisions. This hotel was a great location for all we did being right at central station(which itself is breathtaking being from Florida)

Much has been written regarding the Grand Hyatt and I must disagree
with most of the negative comments. Upon entering, you are awed by the
soothing waterfall that is the center peice of the very regal looking
lobby. I was impressed immediately upon entering. Check in went
smoothly aided by the fact I called the hotel directly to request a
larger than usual room in a quiet section and received it without a
problem. Room was on the twenty first floor and is great for people
that do not want to hear ANY street noise. One of the quietest stays in
the city I've had. Room was very nicely appointed . This has been the
most contested aspect of this hotel. All depends on the individual
experience I guess. No peeling wallpaper or stained carpet anywhere
including common areas. Yes, bathrooms are in need of updating and will
be as part of the 30 million dollar room renovations which will
commence in January. As far as location of hotel is concerned, you
can't be in a better spot for any activity in the mid town area. We
walked to broadway, central park and rockefeller center without a
problem. Perhaps people that are disappointed in this hotel are looking
for Ritz Carlton or St. Regis like treatment. If so, you should not be
booking the Grand Hyatt. People, understand if you want a white glove
boutique style experience then pull out your wallet and stay at the
above mentioned five star properties. For me, when I want a fine stay
at a fine price (booked using priceline) it will be the Grand Hyatt.

Top Local Tips for New York City
Broadway &etc. Try your luck at a ticket lottery for a popular Broadway show (usually at the theatre, 2 hours before curtain - they draw several names and whoever wins get 2 front row or box seats at $25 each). Also, don't eat at the "touristy" restaurants in Midtown/Times Square. Venture up to the Upper West Side or down to the Village and try one of the amazing little cafes that are everywhere. Try to find Big Nick's Pizza Joint.

Tipping Tip according to the service you get, do not tip because you think you have to or because someone is trying to bully you into it. Everyone in NYC is expecting a far greater tip than you are prepared to give them but hold your ground otherwise your pockets will be empty a lot sooner than you want.
