Bad room, worse service

We reserved rooms online with the confidence that Doubletrees provide a certain standard of service - NOT what we received. We were given a room directly over the garage (two sleepless nights of listening to the clanging of the elevator which moves them around), the bathroom had water damage to the ceiling and major mildew issues. When we finally asked to move to another room we were assured by the front desk that it would be taken care of and our bags moved for us while we went out and enjoyed our day... we returned that evening after dinner and we found that no such thing had been done! We were still in our crappy room and no one had touched our repacked bags! Unbelievable for a Doubletree/Hilton property. Will NEVER stay there again or advise anyone else to. I travel a lot and have never been treated quite like this.
Just Fabulous

Husband and I stayed at the Metropolitan Hotelin Toronto for two nights. We were on the 21st floor, just stunning view of the city. Room was spotless, staff was great. Breakfast buffet was excellent !Prime location. Will stay there again.

For the price relative to the area (Manhattan) I could not expect more. I appreciated highly the security services, for tracing the document I left behind to me. I may come again
Perfect Location.

The Metropolitan Hotel is in a perfect location for both sight seeing and shopping. I have recommended to several people since my stay.

I stayed here for a week, room was smelly, staff unhelpful, only saving grace is its location, pay a bit extra and stay elsewhere.

what a relief
from A TripAdvisor Member
As a result of reading the reveiws we were very apprehensive about what to expect. we were staying for a week in september 2003. we found the hotel to be perfectly acceptable, the staff helpful and the location wonderful. Recommend the Oxford diner and the wonderful Willi. Also ate at the hotel restaurant which was very good if not a little expensive.
Anyone going to the Metropolitan please do not worry as i did.

We stopped in the Metropolitan for four nights in early September. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and very helful in some cases. The hotel itself is excellently positioned in Manhattan and is convenient for most of the attractions in New York. Any that you can't walk to you can get to by the subway. There is a subway station just outside the hotel. Buy a pass for the buses and the subway from the hotel travel desk. Our room was small and clean and all the equipment worked in it. On the less positive side the hotel room furniture, carpets etc looked tired and ready for replacement. Two rooms on the floor we stayed on were being refurbished but all the time we were there we never saw anybody working on them. There was absolutely no view from our room except the view of air conditioning units, the noise of which droned on continually. The Metropolitan Hotel was economical to stay in but is not the height of luxury. For breakfast go to Oxfords a deli one minute north on Lexington. Willi will look after you. Tell him you saw his name on the internet, we did. He was delighted.
Great location/bad condition

Great location but needs more attentive maid service and new carpet.
Bad smells in some hallways. Responsive staff, pleasant lobby (though new carpet would help that area, too).

They changed management in July, 2003. We stayed there numerous times while it was a Lowes and after. The new management does not accept the old "frequent stay" cards. No more breakfast or wine/cheese service on the business class floors or the penthouse. They gave us the worst room we have ever had there. Small, no AC (they said they turn it on at 4:00 PM), and no service. Staff would not look us in the eye. We checked out after one night and went to a much better place just up the street.
Happy at the Met.

Stayed at the Metropolitan for 4 nights in August 2003. Decor gloomy , shower slow to drain and view of the airconditioning plant less than pretty !
But room was very clean, staff helpful, beds comfortable, location
excellent! Took the advice of a previous reviewer and headed to the
Oxford for breakfast...THANK YOU!... great food and service and so
cheap. Had a great time... New York ... we loved it! We would go back
to the Metropolitan tomorrow.

Stayed June 29th, 2003 before moving to the Marriott Suites. Waited 30 minutes to check in - 1st room had no air conditioning - called at 4:00 p.m. to fix - back to room at 9:00 p.m. had not been fixed - said, "We'll send someone right up" - no, you said that before - give me a new room. Moved to new room, happy the air worked, but room was filthy - thick dust over furniture - gum wrappers, kleenex on floor - filth in bathroom under vanity - mirrors had not been cleaned in years. Also, this floor was a "pet floor" (I am allergic) - we heard dogs barking all night, and the hallway smelled like cat pee.......Called to have room cleaned and there was no housekeeping on duty! Shower also did not drain - tub would collect water from shower, and take 2 hours to drain. Exhausted, slept there for 1 night - moved the next day, losing the 8 night deposit as we had booked room online. Stay away from this hotel!
Chaotic Reservations and charging
from dannymcl
Made a booking in July for two rooms in this hotel in August. I have stayed there before on business.
Found on my next credit card statement, a mysterious $159 dollar charge. Why? For a no show.
Apparently Loews Corporation who have now sold this hotel told the Met' I would be staying in July. When of course I did not show - I was charged a no-show fee.
Neither Loews nor the Metropolitan seems in a hurry to give me my money back so I will have to tell my credit card company to initiate a "chargeback".
My last bad experience of US hotels was the Le Meridien Beverly Hills and look what has happend to the Le Meridien Group!
I wonder how long the Metropolitan will thrive (survive?) under its new owners??

Pay up to $129.95 per day only

Excellent location - can walk to most attractions and restaurants.
Subway (6) is right outside the main entrance. Great service/staff.
Above average rooms - cleanliness, decor and size. Only concern is that the hotel is near fire station - noisy sirens sometimes. Try to get a room away from the fire station. Got a deal for $99.95 per night. Don't pay more than $129.95 for a standard size room. If rate is higher, go elsewhere.

New York is a blast

Stayed in the Metropolitan June 28 through July2. When we arrived at 9:00 p.m. due to delays our room was not ready. They gave us a voucher for beer or wine in the bar but could not use it for a coke -weird.
Waited about 15 minutes. Room was small and above the fire station but okay. We did have twin beds rather than a single queen. While getting ready for bed, the bed broke. The housekeeping staff was WONDERFUL. We stayed there that night (no problems with the fire station)and the next day they moved us to a suite for the rest of our stay. Very nice!!!!
the furnishings are dated (reminded me of the early 60's) but I went to see the city, not the hotel. NY is wonderful! We felt safe, walked around late at night, loved Times square, Central Park, saw the Producers, visited Ground Zero. Had tickets for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island but did not go because there was a 40 minute wait in the sun before we got on the boat. We gave our tickets away. No homeless or panhandlers like we saw in Washington except in battery park). Can't wait to go back and would stay at the Metro. again. It was part of our vacation package from Alaska Airlines and well worth the price.

Top Local Tips for New York City
taxis ensure that they are on a flat fee and leave time to get to the airport as traffic jams are the usual. don't forget to add sales tax to the cost of your shopping
Taxis If you do stay at the Doubletree, always get in the cab first before telling them your hotel destination or they may well drive off and leave you standing there. Recommendation every time you hail a cab is to get in first then tell them where you want to go!
Churriscuria There is an amazing Brazilian restaurant which I have probably spelt wrong in the title! It is in the Tribeca part of the city and I cannot wait to go back there some day
