ROOM: First room was so bad (TV did not work, heating leaked and hissed and we did not sleep at all that night) we had to move the next day. Second room: acceptable, clean but small.
BREAKFAST: tiny breakfast room - don't get there late or you will have no table to eat at, or at best have to share with others. Also you eat off plastic plates and drink from polystyrene cups! Only options for breakfast are 1 cereal, toast and doughnuts - so do not expect much!
SERVICE: not bad when things are ok, but if you have a problem don't expect any friendly support and they will not go out of their way to help you.
LOCATION: Ideal if you are looking for affordable accommodation close to the touristy part of lower Manhattan, want to spend a bit of time in the park and plan to walk into lower Manhattan a couple of times a day for a few days. But this hotel does not look over the park; it's just close enough to most things in lower Manhattan.
OVERALL: I'd say fine for anything up to $100-$150 a night max. We had to pay $450 a night for the above - DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT. They justified it by saying we came during peak shopping season (early Dec) which is rubbish as while we were there we managed to find far better accommodation at 4* Hotels overlooking the east side of the park for half that price!! Since we could not get a refund on our booking we did not move and braved it out at this hotel. In summary, nothing great but acceptable if the price is right and you don't expect too much.

We enjoyed our stay at the Comfort Inn. The room was small, but what room in New York City isn't small?!! The employees were helpful and did a good job. The location was great, easy access to the subway, park and many good restaurants. We are returning in June.

I have stayed at this hotel twice and enjoyed it both times. It is safe, secure and clean and comfortable.
OK the rooms are a bit small and the breakfast hardly cordon bleu, but then how many people visit NY to hang around in their hotel room all day? as for breakfast, there are some great places to eat on the upper west side. Here you are very close to Colombus deli, Zabar's and other really good places to eat - so live a little! Suggest you pick up a good sandwich and a cup of hot coffee, stroll the block-and-a-half to the park with a copy of the times, relax and enjoy! For a sit down dinner, I suggest Carmines on broadway, a couple of blocks over and a couple of blocks up, great food, great atmosphere.
The staff at this hotel are great, the guy on reception was very helpful, as was the guy on security and the ladies in the cafeteria were really nice - all this and a free USA today!
Enjoy yourself - if you want luxury stay at the plaza!!

We stayed here for a week, and I have to say it was an excellent experience. The hotel is less than a block from the park, a block from all the shops and restaurants on Columbus Ave., a block from the subway station -- can't ask for a better location. The neighborhood is very safe... lots of locals walking around with their pedigree dogs. You'll also encounter a bunch of Julliard students in the area.
The staff was very friendly and helpful whenever we needed directions or recommendations for where to eat, etc. They even gave us a top floor room.
I saw a lot of reviews saying the rooms were small -- I don't know what they were expecting. The room had everything we needed -- bed, toilet, shower, sink, desk, closet, tv, lamps. We managed to work around it for a whole week, but we're both average sized people. I looked at a lot of other hotels, but couldn't find anything that came close to the price we were getting unless you start looking at hostels and shared bathrooms. And besides... you're in New York -- you're supposed to go out and explore, not stay in your room!

Our first visit to New York June 2004. The room was booked on the internet direct then upgraded to a queen room after reading reviews that the rooms wre small .Although the room was small and the bed was pushed up against the wall on one side it was clean though decor outdated. I asked if the room was a queen as it was so cramped and was told yes it was but queried it again on the second day to find out it was in fact a double we were offered a change of room which was larger and more space but it was inconvenient having to pack and move everything. On the plus side the location was good with Central Park just at the end of the block and subway and buses just a short walk we bought a Metrocard for 7 days which took us everywhere all for $23. Good breakfast included and the Columbus deli good for snacks closeby.
Uuggh! Try elsewhere!

Claustrophic? Need two beds? Don't even think about this room! Our room wrapped around the elevator - literally - an "L" shaped room with double bed and one TWIN! TV can't even be viewed from both beds. Can't turn around in the bathroom. Cramped, dingy, dirty, ill stocked, and front desk was no help. I'm a member of Quality chain of hotels, and am appalled that this hotel still carries the Comfort Inn label. The chain needs an on-site visit to seriously consider removing this one from the Comfort name. It was absolutely NOT comfortable to me!
Upside - it is close to Central Park and convenient to the subway, one block from the Dakota and near a great breakfast cafe - Columbus Deli.

This hotel is not as bad as some of the reviewers have claimed. The location is excellent. If you are accustomed to posh hotels this place isn’t for you; but, if you want a clean and safe room in an excellent neighborhood, this is the place. If there are more than two people in your party, you’re going to need more rooms, rollaway beds aren’t a realistic option in this hotel’s rooms. Thanks goes to the person who said to ask for a front facing room, very good advice. The bottom line is that New York is expensive and rooms do not come cheap especially those in such a great location.

The room was so tiny and smelled of cigarette smoke, even though it was non-smoking. The plumbing is definitely not up to par. In the shower, when you go from the bath feature to turn on the shower feature, it makes a groaning noise like the plumbing is going to explode or worse yet, stop working all together. We needed to be in the city for a talk show taping and the hotel was only good because of it's location to where we needed to be. Definitely not worth the money, but certainly made for a memorable 2nd anniversary, we'll have it to laugh about!

My friend and I booked a trip to Paris and decided to tack on a few days in New York on our return. After staying in a small european hotel we were looking forward to a nice normal size room and ammendities afford to you in the States. Upon our arrival the problems started. The room was not what was advertised on the web - the hotel clerk explained the one shown on the web was the room with the queen size bed - and downhill from there it went. Room was right next to the elevator, heard the chimming of the floors - had to ask for toilet paper, the one and only lamp had a burned out light bulb and the showerhead broke during our stay. All in all it was a miserable stay. Upon leaving we asked for help in booking the super shuttle to the Airport. The only help we received was to be told to get a cab! Would not recommend this property to anyone. Comfort Inn would be appalled if they knew how their chain was being represented!

This place was not bad! I was pleasantly surprised after reading some of these reviews. First, the front desk people were very helpful and when a minor glitch was discovered at check-in they made it right by giving our group a better location at a better rate.
The location is wonderful. Around the cornor from the Dakotas and the 72 St. Subway for the B and C lines, OR two blocks to the West for the 72nd Broadway Subway and the Red 1,2,3, lines. This gives you quick and easy access to NYC at all times, day or night (example, stuck in Times Square after a play and don't want to wait for the B or C lines, just jump on the 1,2, or 3 and go to 72nd and Broadway to walk an extra 1 1/2 blocks to the hotel.) Did I mention that Central Park is 1/2 block away?
The Rooms were small, and it is true that a room with a Queen sized bed is better than the room with two single beds which would be too cramped. The rooms on the upper floors (I stayed on 12th) were redecorated and clean, compared to some of the other NYC dives (Hotel Pennsylvania) I have stayed in. Yes, the elevator is tiny and slow, but not any inconvience to me. The Hotel is located near some great places, Gray's Papaya (72nd & Brdway), Zabar's Deli (79th & Brdway) and some great little restaurants (City Grill). For the location, it's worth it. Good Luck! Avoid this Hotel if you want the basics

I made the mistake of staying at this Hotel last fall. I made the mistake of thinking the pictures on the hotel's website was actually a real room at the hotel. This is an old, tiny, dirty and cheap hotel. Maybe some people like this type of accommodations but not me. I left this hotel after one night of misery and went to the Hilton at Time Square.

Upon entering the hotel, we discovered that the registration desk was undermanned and overwhelmed. Our room was tiny and our queen bed was shoved into a corner. At least I didn't have to worry about rolling off the bed on to the floor!
Upon leaving the hotel after checkout, they had difficulty summoning a taxi.
On the plus side, the location was great, the shower functioned fine, the room was clean and warm, and the buffet breakfast was adequate though unexceptional.
What else could one expect for $109 a night in midtown?
It's tough my wife and I getting ready for a night at the opera in a room that's hardly bigger than the bed, though.
Now we know, there are better choices.

Top Local Tips for New York City
Stretching Your Dining Dollars Dining is relatively inexpensive at New York's many cafes. While all the cafes allow you to choose your food cafeteria-style and have similar menus, some are more attractive and have a greater variety than others. We especially liked GiGi's Cafe at Broadway and 72nd St. (2067 Broadway). Also, higher price does not guarantee you a better dining experience. We splurged on one meal at Brasserie 8 1/2 (9 W. 57th St.). Although the food was excellent, our server was inexperienced and unknowlegeable about the menu. Overall, though, we had a pleasant meal.
Subway TAKE THE SUBWAY!! It is not scary whatsoever, it is easier than you think to navigate (as long as you are on the correct side of the street!) and it's 10 million times more afforadble than taking taxis! Buy a week long subway pass and ride as much as you want!
The Subway Definately get a weekly ticket. Only cost $47 for both of us.

Assuming you aren't expecting to stay in your room your entire trip, this place is fine. Great location for an early morning power walk through the park and midtown. Korean grocer on Columbus sells great coffee at 0'Dark Thirty AM so get up and get after it!
I wouldn't try to impress your wife with this place but it's fine for road warriors who go to NYC to enjoy the city not the Hotel room.
