Apart from the location and cleanliness, this hotel falls far below par, even for a four-star rating. The staff were arrogant, inattentive and constantly demonstrated a reluctance to help. The menu at the restaurant ("Country") was muddled and uninspiring while still managing to remain somewhat pretentious, and the lukewarm food was casually dumped on the table by the service staff. The lobby was the most attractive part of this building but was constantly in near darkness, and the bar was overpriced - when it was open. The management consider corporate events a higher priority than guests; a pack-'em-in ethos rarely seen outside a backpacker's hostel.
There are many other hotels located in midtown that will provide a better service and for less money. Avoid like plague.

Stayed for four nights late Nov 6 adults in total. Loved hotel, fab location, friendly staff, rooms small but immaculate. Nothing was too much trouble, can't wait to go back again someday! The hotel bar is a must too...great staff and service.

I stayed at the Carlton from March 10th thru the 14th. I had read mixed reviews on this hotel and was a bit nervous about staying there, but as soon as I arrived, I knew I had made the right decision. A doorman greeted me right away and took my bags upstairs. The gentleman at the lobby was extremely professional, friendly and helpful. The room I stayed in was very CLEAN, nicely decorated and cozy. The linens and towels were fresh and changed on a daily basis. The bathroom was immaculate as well. I had to call room service and once again I was greeted with friendly and prompt service. Overall, I think the Carlton is a wonderful hotel compared to their reasonable prices. I would definitely stay there again!

Stayed there in early/mid April 2004. Nice hotel. Small rooms, SMALL bathrooms. Still some problems with the renovation, e.g., no running water for a couple of hours, toilet clogs easily, most elevators out of work. Frankly, stayed at much better in NYC for cheaper.

I arrived in New York on 6 March 2004 to find my hotel full, so they had checked me into the Carlton. The location was fine, as were the rooms. The lobby area though was being renovated. The lobby was tiny therefore and only one of the lifts seemed to work.

A nice touch was the complimentary coffee first thing in the morning.

Stayed here for a week from 6th March until 13th March. Nice clean hotel, rooms are a good size (we stayed in a standard room) with all the mod cons that u need from a hotel room. Rooms are very nicely decorated. The hotel is in the middle of a major refurb but this had no affect on us at all. A very good location, handy to all that you could want to see (everything just a few stops away in the train) Glad that we had upgraded to an other hotel after reading really bad results about it. It def is worth having your own bathroom believe it makes all the difference.

Some brief points if considering the Carlton Hotel, NY. The hotel is still being renovated considerably - not 'moderately' as some people may suggest. The lobby is tiny and plain, as the majority of the ground floor is 'work in progress'. The first 4 floors are 'gutted' and being worked on. This may not seem too much of a problem, but, as only one of the three "4-person-capacity" elevators works (just), it is often necessary to have to take the stairs and walk through the 'rubble'. Not very pleasant. The rooms are ok, but not quite 3*, and certainly not 4* as the hotel website boasts. They aren't too spacious, but adequate.
The location isn't bad, with a couple of subway stops within a few blocks. I must admit, if it was my first visit to "The Big Apple", then I might have been more impressed with the hotel. But, the fact is, I wouldn't recommend the Carlton Hotel at the moment while its still undergoing major changes.

Great Hotel! Stayed in February 2004 - it is undergoing a multi-million dollar rennovation.Very clean, cozy, rooms are small, but very pleasant. Very conveniently located.STAY THERE!

I did a lot of searching to find a hotel using TripAdvisor. I narrowed my search down to 2 hotels (The Carlton and Thirty Thirty) and finally went with The Carlton Hotel as Thirty Thirty was more expensive and besides they had no rooms available. I was very impressed. After all the reviews on other hotels at a similar price, I was expecting the worst. The outside is an impressive, old beaux arts building. They still seem to be doing some renovations but this did not cause any problems for us. Our room was a reasonable size, very smart, clean, minimalist but comfy. Bathroom is marble with good fittings. Location was great - 4 blocks from Macy's. I highly recommend staying here.

I got a great deal on octopustravel.com (much better deal than my friend who stayed in a cramped hostel). My friends and I were shocked by how awesome the room was! It was very very nice, updated, and clean.
The elevators sucked but hopefully they have improved on that. I had a good experience w/ the managment there, but I don't know about the higher ups. The location isn't bad. We were able to walk to the Empire State building, and for much more needed exercise, to Time Square. The metro station is about 2 blocks away. And there's a somewhat expensive deli nearby which was open late. All in all, I give this place 2 thumbs up!

I agree with the statements that the rooms are wonderful. We were there only for New Year's Even. We had a beautiful room, a little small, but when in New York... The staff was friendly for the most part. My biggest issue was that there was no doorman present at any point when we were there. We had three very large, heavy bags with us, and I did not appreciate having to carry them up the front steps and then back down when we left. Also, the elevators were a little unnerving. They were small, and they didn't seem to work very well. I'm hoping that will be remedied once the construction is finished. Overall, we had a good stay. But, if you are looking for luxury, you may want to wait until the construction is finished.

Top Local Tips for New York City

January in NYC Visit the Frick museum and Ellis Island. The Frick has some of the finest art in the worlld in a setting that is breathtaking. Also visit the Ellis Island museum - and definitely get the headset tour. Well worth the extra money. Also, the time of year to go: I'd go to NYC in January or February over prime time December or summer any time. You can get tickets to shows, see the museums without lines, get into great restaurants and get great deals on hotels. Take advantage of the subway - it is quick, safe during the day, and extremely economical. Avoid the air and The cabs are good only for night and getting to and from the airport, train station etc. Avoid the pedicabs. Make reservations for hotels early and keep checking the website even after you have made the reservation - our hotel rate went down $30 a night AFTER we made the reservation so we called and they changed the rate. Also, TKTS is a great bargain - arrive early and be prepared to wait an hour but it is worth it.

niagra if anybody gets the time or chance to go on a trip to niagra falls then do so. It's a very lon and tiring day but worth every penny. our trip was well organised and our tour guide made for a memory of a lifetime.

Best breakfast in town If you are up 5th Avenue, head down the side of St Patricks cathedral (Armani EXC side) and check out PRIME BURGER - do not let the name put you off - What a great place for breakfast. really good value and an old fashioned diner. Remember they close on sundays. SJP has even eaten here !
