Top Local Tips for New York City
tipping taxes tipping taxes tipping taxes tipping taxes tipping taxes tipping Shopping, Dining and Drinking throughout the US is generally a lot cheaper than it is in Europe and especially the UK. It is cheaper in New York but REMEMBER they add on taxes and tips to just about everything. You still get your bargains but not as cheaply as your first think. The hotel taxes are insane - you get your price but then they add a room tax !!!, city tax and state tax. You get your bill in a restaurant and then they add 20% service. You pick up a sweater and then they add sales tax. It is infuriating. Everywhere has taxes but what's wrong with displaying the full price after tax like the rest of the world..!!!
Getting around by Transport and Shopping Tips I found the subway and buses very easy to use and the easy way to get back to hotel fast when you start to get exhausted after a heavy day of shopping. Shopping is fantastic especially if you are in NYC when it's a holiday time and they have fabulous sales in many of the stores. Reminders to tourists is that at Bloomingdales and Macys you can collect a 11% discount card from the visitors centres in each store. Great for all the little things for us girls (except cosmetics) and great for prezzies for less money for folks back home. New Yorkers were friendly and most were eager to help you.
Getting to/from JFK There is a subway (as well as Long Island Railroad, LIRR) going from NYC to the Jamaica station. You can catch an AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica station for $5 and then get into Manhattan via subway or subway/LIRR combo (faster) for under $15 and in about an hour. This is recommended if you have a plane to catch on Friday afternoon since taxis can take forever getting out of Manhattan in traffic!
