Weekend away in NY with friends

My wife & friends say they were promised a room with two large beds. When they eventually got the room it had, one large bed & a pull-out bed which is "extremely uncomfortable" so they take turns on it every alternate night.
In spite of this they are enjoying themselves but we would all probably not go back to this hotel in a group again.

Great Location and Value

My husband and I stayed at Bentley Hotel during our 3 day vacation in Manhattan. The hotel definitely gets an A+ in value. While the hotel charges very reasonable rates for its Upper Eastside location, it manages not to scrimp on comfort and aesthetic appeal. One thing we loved about the hotel was its unique character -- an absent quality in many popular hotel chains. The lobby is quite impressive (doesn't look like a generic check-in area) and the ubiquitous aroma from the complimentary 24-hour cappuccino bar makes the ground floor very inviting. Our room was a bit on the small side, but the modern, minimalist furniture made the room feel less confined, and the view of the Queensboro Bridge and adjacent buildings from the large window (absolutely gorgeous at night) more than made up for any lack of space. The bed and pillows were comfy and the cleaning staff did a good job in keeping our room tidy and well-stocked with towels and other basic items. Overall, Bentley Hotel was a nice retreat after a long day of perusing Manhattan.

As experienced travellers but yet first-time visitors to NY we found the Bentley Hotel to be very good value for money. The hotel staff were very friendly, courteous and helpful, the rooms were clean and tidy as was the reception and hallways etc.. Slightly away from the centre of the city but only a short Subway or Taxi ride away (Approx $8 to Times Square/Broadway). Also, pretty quiet at night considering that the hotel is next to the imposing Queensboro' Bridge/ Would definitely recommend a visit to the Bentley for any age group.

As travelers from Europe to visit New York, we expect more service and information from reception. No smile and no help ;-(

Lobby gives an impression of simple, modern stylish. Bed comfortable but room was freezing. Heater provided totally inadequate. Bathroom a little cramped, breakfast room was more like a glorified soup kitchen. Bed comfortable.

Very nice decor, service and staff. Room was comfortable and quiet. I received an upgrade to a suite with not additional charge. The neighborhood is very nice.

The hotel was still left and right in the midst of small renovation works, but this did not interfere with our stay. Rooms were nice, staff friendly and helpful. Only the restaurant (indeed with a great view) was not as inviting as could be.... We enjoyed the stay.

Convenient & not hyperexpensive

We stay there because it's in a convenient place and isn't hyperexpensive. You get a clean, though spare room, there's a capuccino machine in the lobby that works about half the time. They do offer an included continental breakfast which consists of bagels, coffee and orange juice. You wouldn't think you could get a bad bagel in New York, but there are much better ones available in Alabama (which is my adopted home now). One more thing: If you don't want to get stuck in a smoking room, you must be sure to call them separately before your stay or they will ignore the preference you make on the site simply because they can..and almost no one these days wants the smell of smoke. We had to downgrade the room when I forgot to do this. The other non-non is that while the only way to get a quiet room (the hotel is right next to the 59th street bridge), you need to choose a high floor and the elevaators are slower than molasses in Jauary between 7AM and 10 PM. If you want ice, better beat everyone else to the one public ice machine in the entire hotel. I know that I'm making the place sound worse than it is...if you want what I like in a NY city Hotel, you need to pay three times the price of this one, so it really isn't such a bad deal. There have been times they didn't have rooms there when i needed them and some of the other comparably priced places I've stayed in make your skin crawl.....

great hotel

from bell51
my husband and i visited nyc and stayed at the bentley hotel last may, we found the hotel very modern, the room had fantastic views and was very clean. the free coffee and breakfast was much appreciated the only downside was that public transport to other attractions was quite a long walk from the hotel but we found that the cabs were quite cheap to use. i would recommend this hotel without hesitation.

Cosy spot, once you get there!

This is the third (and our least favourite) location of the Amsterdam Hospitality Group of hotels we have tried since August 2002. It is situated at the end of a quiet and dark street, adjacent to a Mobil gas station. If you come, arrive in daylight. The staff are very courteous, knowlegeable and professional, our hotel room amazingly spacious and the almost panoramic view from the 21st floor breakfast room breathtaking. The hotel is 2 blocks from the Roosevelt Island cable car station (costs the same as a regular subway ride) and down the block from a cluster of hospitals. It is a perfect location for visiting family or friends in one of these hospitals, but a bit out of the way for travellers who like to be in the middle of the action. If you stay here, get a metrocard so that you can hop on the M31 bus that passes right by the hotel.

beware the bentley hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had booked 2 triple rooms at the Bentley through a reputible travel agent. On arrival at the hotel, midnight on 14 Feb, the reception staff stated that we had no reservation there. We now know this to be false.
We ended up staying at a hospital residency 9 blocks away! The Bentley is over booking people, so beware, the same may happen to you too. You too may be abandoned on the streets as we were.

Great Deal!

if you are paying for the hotel yourself or trying to save your business some money - this is a great place to stay to get a good deal.
My room was great with a view of the skyline and was spacious and clean. Loved the 21st floor breakfast room - what an incredible view! I drove to NYC for the weekend and the parking garage is pretty well priced for manhattan ($20/day). Overall the location is out of the way but it suited my needs for a nice, clean place that was very well priced. (under $130/nt).

Bentley is COLD

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just stayed at The Bentley Jan, 2004. One suggestion, dress warm if your staying here in the winter!!! For the price ($97) we had a very nice room with a nice view. The King bed and 4 huge down-filled pillows were the most comfy I've ever had in any hotel. Our room was warm and cozy, but everywhere else in the hotel was freezing. The hallways, elevators, lobby, library, & top-floor lounge were so cold. (And we're used to extreme-cold living in SD) The lounge would be awesome in the spring, summer, or fall, but when it's only 25degrees in Jan., you needed a winter coat to sit in the lounge. One night we went up to eat, ordered our food, and 1 hour later and half frozen the waiter informed us the kitchen "lost"our order. So, believe it or not we reorderd, and waited another 40 minutes...and still no food... so we finally left. That was by far the worst experience of our 4 night stay. We went back up 2 nights later for cocktails, but we definitely ate somewhere else before going back to hotel. The morning bagels & beverages was nice. So, I would guess that if the temp was warmer while in NY, we would've enjoyed our stay very much!! Again, very very comfy bed and pillows!

Very Average........

from A TripAdvisor Member
I would not recommend this hotel. On the whole, the staff were ignorant and not really interested in helping in any shape or form.

Hotel rooms were poor and we had to change rooms three times due to severe condensation saturating the carpets through to heaters not working.

Location was fine and there are some reasonable bars near by.

If I were to go to NYC again, I would definetly NOT stay here

Bargain!

from quingbex
A very pleasant hotel! Clean and comfortable rooms and we didn't have any problems with noise considering we were above a petrol station and next to an animal shelter. The restaurant on the 21st floor had wonderful views of the Manhattan skyline. We had no complaints about the location as it was only a 20 min walk to Central Park and cab fares are reasonable if you want to go downtown. Very impressed considering we paid so little to stay in New York!

good deal

from A TripAdvisor Member
reading some of the reviews, we did not know what to expect. we stayed one night and found the hotel to be pretty decent. the location is not the most convenient but it is close to the Central Park. considering what i paid for it was worth the money.

Press the yellow button

from A TripAdvisor Member
There is only one way to describe this hotel and the word is "strange". The location is not bad, if you walk 1 block the neighbourhood is quiet but with enough restaurants etc. A good place for people who dont fancy the turmoil of Broadway. The suites have reasonably dimensions for a New York Hotel and we could even laugh about the depressed artist who chooses the colours for the interior design and those awful flower statues. But the problem is...The staff !. Try to get room service and they tell you on Monday... no sorry not after 10 am.... On Tuesday...sorry not before 10 am and on Thursday...a simple answer to the question do you have room service ... a simple NO and the NO room service person hangs up the phone ! We decided that it was a lottery... one could win room service if one called at the right moment. Then we wanted to watch a movie on the movie channel. "Press the yellow button, a womans voice said huskily on the channel... but... we looked and looked but no yellow button on the remote... The desk clerk could not help but after some pressure decided that the ultimate solution would be a change of rooms instead of a change of TV's there was a yellow button on the remote in the other room. But of course it did not work. Maintenance was called and could not offer a solution but after some persuasive phrases spoken to him in his own language was all of a sudden capable of fixing the problem. The chambermaid was so discrete she didnt even empty the trashcans or cleaned the room. Only linen and towels where changed. On the famous topside restaurant turned out to be a cafeteria that tried to look like a truckers roadside restaurant, not the place for a romantic evening overlooking the skyline.. We had a good time in the Bentley cause we were in a good mood and could laugh at these things. End yes its not the end of the world all this minor mishaps. But on the other hand, If the Bentley pretends to be a 4 star hotel and let people pay 250 dollars a night for a suite... then give the service that comes with those pretensions. People would like a cup of coffee delivered at their room, would like clear answers and a little bit of service then it could be a real hotel instead of an imitation of an old English TV series "falwty towers" about a crazy hotel owner and his even more crazy staff who hated their guests.

This hotel is brilliant i loved every minute of it. I couldnt find one fault with this hotel at all. The sign said ouside come as guests, leave as friends. And it was very clean to say the least. Peter Kay would be very proud.

Top Local Tips for New York City

Restaurants close by Try Dalga, a turkish restaurant just up the street from the Bentley: with a great selection of fresh fish. Also near: Bistro 61, two bolcks away. Isle of Capri, a new Italian restaurant a few blocks away, romantic atmosphere and good food.

Hotel Room number Ask for a room ending in 07 or 08 on a high floor to get a suite with amazing views!

Four Seasons, Segram building The four Seasons is one of the most over-rated dining experiences I've ever had. Staff cold and indifferent and over-priced wine (the bottle we bought was 100 USD and if you bought it in an off-licence you would be upset if you paid over £10), also no sommelier to provide any guidance on the vast wine list. Food was tasty but definitely overrated.
