I travel 200 days a year and this hotel was the worst ever !

Clean and tidy but many problems

I have now stayed at the Belnord on two separate occasions two years apart. In Dec 2004, I found the hotel clean and tidy with all the basic comforts catered for. Having had a satisfactory stay two years ago, I booked again but was this time very dissatisfied. The heating system was our main concern the pipes would make an awful noise throughout the night as the heating system came on and off, it was as if somebody was sat next to you hitting the pipe with a spanner, no exaggeration that is exactly what I thought was going on, When I got up to complain the reception man said it was an old system and cannot be helped. The problem happened every night of our stay and every night we had very disturbed sleep, as did others on our floor. We were on second floor of block 7. Others in our party in other rooms had no such problems but were upset at the coffee, internet and candy machines not working throughout our stay. I will not stay at the Belnord again.

Cheap (For Ny City) & Clean

Good place to stay if you don't mind sharing bathroom (very clean) and tiny, dark rooms. Absolutely without any comfort (no chairs, barely room for luggage), but for a short budget trip it is ok.

Small But Convenient

I was amazed at how small the room was, barely room enough to move around. It did have a private bath, which was also very tiny. It was a convenient location close to the subway stop 1/2 way between Columbia and Times Square. Room was clean, but I probably won't stay there again because of the size of the room.

An enjoyable stay

I recently stayed at this hotel for 6 nights, and have nothing bad to say about it. The rooms were not massive, but there was enough space for me to move around. At the end of the day, the rates were extremely reasonable, and I was only using the room to sleep in. I guess if I wanted to remain in my room all day, then I would feel a bit claustrophobic, but who wants to do that anyway? The room I stayed I was equipped with a microwave and a fridge which came in handy. One thing that may turn people away is the fact of sharing a bathroom. But I did not see anyone else, sometimes a wet shower curtain, and the bathroom was very clean.


As I have mentioned in other reviews, at the end of the day you get what you pay for, and if you expect 5 star décor and service, unfortunately you have to pay for it.

I would have no problem in recommending this hotel to anyone - it is far enough outside of Times Square etc to relax and take a break from the hustle and bustle. It is close to Central Park - about a 5 minute walk), and has a multitude of bars and restaurants in the vicinity. Being situated in a more residential area enables you to experience the ‘real New York’ as supposed to the glitzy sometime false overpriced places in the centre. The hotel is also very close to a main subway line if you need to get to the centre quickly, or if like me you don’t mind walking, then it is a good 45 ion walk, but you really see so much more than you would if stuck on a train….

Not That Bad!!

The hotel is in a great location. In between two subway stops and near central park. The staff is not friendly or willing to help. There is a pungent odor in the hallways. We were placed in the dorm section of the hotel, which was not pleasent. You can practicaly not fit your luggage in the room. Restrooms are suprisingly clean even though they are shared. The worst part of the hotel is that there are no elevators. If you stay on the second floor it is ok, but not on the fourth like we did. Would recommend with somebody on a budget, who does not need more than 4 hrs of sleep, with only one luggage, and does not mind sharing a restroom. Must try Ray's on the corner of Broadway and 86th.

Belnord is a clean hotel, and is situated near subway and central park, which is convenient.
I must warn you, that if you are bringing luggage in(more than 1 suitcase), it won't fit in your room. The rooms are very small. The people at the front desk are not very helpful nor friendly. I experienced a lot more of service in the US. We booked a triple room, but did not get it. There are 2 buildings, one of them is the actual hotel, but that was not mentioned te us, we had to stay in the dorm section of the hotel, which was not very pleasant.
If you want only to sleep it's Ok. But if you want a little comfort, don't go there.

Great Location o.k. rooms

My husband and I stayed at the Belnord mostly because it was inexpensive and according the reviews was in a great location. I knew it wouldn't be fancy but figured we wouldn't be in our room much and was right. We woke up early and came home late almost everyday so it was nice to not pay the high price for a hotel when your never there. I was pretty nervous to see the hotel but was pleasently suprised when I arrived. The rooms are very small. It was practically the size of my walk-in closet. We had two twin beds, a small desk, TV, fridge, and microwave in our room. Our room was very clean. They cleaned it every morning and thankfully I didn't see one bug! It was great! My complaint is the sharing bathroom. I don't think I will ever share a bathroom again. If your the type that doesn't mind sharing bathrooms go for it. - I hated it! The first three days the bathroom was fine and clean. The last three days were disgusting. I was digusted with the toilets, shower, sink, etc. Some toilets flooded and wouldn't flush, there were towells laying around, hair on the walls.

As far as location it was so great! Your right next to central park and the subway.

My advise to you would to bring your own mirror so you can do your hair and make-up in your own room so your not in the bathroom so much.

I actually would stay there again I would just get my own bathroom.

Very clean, great location

On my recent trip, I found the Belnord to be extremely clean and safe. We got the least expensive room (bunk beds) with shared bathrooms and the maids did an excellent job of cleaning the rooms and bathrooms every morning. The location is excellent-- close to subway stations, restaurants, Central Park and museums, etc. And we both noted that there was never any feeling of being unsafe in the hotel or the surrounding hotel neighborhood. As a bonus, we had a small refrigerator and microwave in our room to boot. To note, the rooms are very very small, there is no elevator, and the stairwells and hallways are narrow. This is not the place for you if you are clausterphobic or plan on spending a lot of time in your hotel room. But if you are looking for a safe and clean place to sleep, this place is more than adequate.

Booked online, and was about what expected. On the downside as mentioned in another review, the hall ways were smokey (why?). We had bathrooms outside of the room, and I found them very clean (few people were using them). The staff seemed very friendly to me. Rooms were cramped but to be expected in NY....this isn't Montana. Our room had funky erstwhile bunk beds (taken appart and converted to twins) but they were comfortable . . . this isnt the Hyatt. Great location and very quiet. Recommend as a budget hotel.

This was an awful place to stay, I know it was budget but that is not an excuse for the bad attitude of staff, holes in the door, rubbish in the corridor, patchy carpet you tripped up over, no lifts and no help with your luggage up all those stairs. I would not stay here again if forced. I did stay in Novemeber 2001 but I doubt that even in 3 years much has changed, from the reviews it appears not.

Clean, Comfy, and walk-in Closet-sized

A friend and I stayed in one of the bunk-bed rooms, and we found it a perfectly clean and comfortable nook to collapse in after heavy sightseeing. The "above average" rating is given with strong consideration to the price. For that price, our only other option would have probably been a hostel, and the Belnord provided a level of privacy, quiet, and cleanliness not universally associated with hostels (or with budget hotels, for that matter). The shared bathrooms were clean, if sometimes lacking in legroom and toilet tissue. I'll likely return.

Excellent location on the Upper West Side

While the rooms at the Belnord are tiny and very basic, the location is terrific. The 86th Street subway stop is just across Broadway and the cross town bus makes this a convenient location for East Side attractions as well. If need a hotel room for sleeping, showering, and stashing your purchases, the Belnord certainly meets your needs at a good price.

Cheap, Cheerful, Convenient

Wanting to do something different for my best friend's 50th birthday we decided on celebrating it together in New York - I did a lot of research looking for cheap and cheerful accommodation for this very special occasion as neither of us had much money to spend. Another factor of major consideration for two girlies together in the 'big city' was safety. The Belnord sounded ideal and we were thrilled with our comfy little room (I did request private bathroom though as I'm overly fussy). The neighbourhood had a really safe feel to it with lots of stores and eating places all very close, of particular mention was the grocery store over on Broadway - so convenient and stocked with anything and everything.
The desk personnel were terrific - especially ARMANDO - extremely polite, helpful and friendly chap - cleaners did a great job on our room too. With the hotel just a trot away from the 86th Street subway on Broadway, and another station in the other direction right next to Central Park, getting out for sightseeing couldn't have been more convenient, or safer, any time of day or night we wandered around.
So thanks Belnord for contributing to my friend and I having a great time in New York and enjoying her birthday with good memories.
(If there is a negative to comment on, it was due to the smokers that hung around the front doorway and their clouds of smoke circulating around the establishment).

subway pass Staying a week or so? BUY A SUBWAY PASS. Great Mexican resturaunt around the corner.

Carmel For rides to and from the airport, reserve a car with Carmel. You can bypass the long line or people waiting for cabs at the airport by calling to confirm with Carmel and within minutes getting into the car. The cars are Lincoln Towncars and the prices are CHEAPER than cabs!! I paid with credit, which is more expensive, and with tolls and tip the total was around $48 each way. I saw a sign in the hotel lobby that advertised a group cab from the hotel to the airport for $80!!!!!! Yikes.
