Its All You Need

Going to New York for the first time in my life and on my own as a single woman I wanted to make sure to stay at a safe and real nice place around the corner from 5th Avenue, MoMA, Central Park etc. With Ameritania Hotel I really found that place providing nice, clean and quiet rooms, owning a bathroom stuffed with SPA ingredients etc. I was a little surprised about the fact that they do not offer breakfast but provide a bar next to the Lobby. In the end I loved it: reduced to the max at fair prices...since there is always Star Bucks and Deli restaurants around the corner to cover certain needs.
Well Located

I enjoyed the location of the hotel because it is right in the heart of the theatre district. It is also clean and the staff is efficient. The down side is that this was the smallest "room" I have ever stayed in. There was a double or queen size bed in the room and space only for two end tables along each side of the bed and about 3 feet of space between the end of the bed and the wall. (maybe 9' x 10'). The bathroom was also tiny. While decently decorated, it was more like a moderate sized master bedroom closet. I was alone so that it didn't matter too much to me but two people would have felt quite cramped in this "room."
Frugally Fabulous

Perfect location and price, the Ameritania was much more than we expected. If you're in The City with the intentions of being out on the town most of the time while having an affordable place in the heart of it all, this is your place. Sure the bedrooms are small with a not so modern but trying to be modern look, but the beds are comfortable and everything you need is there. The downstairs bar, with a nice warm fireplace, made for a perfect meeting point as well as great place to grab a couple of drinks before you hit the town. I give it a thumbs up! Do it, do it.

Such a Dissapointment
from A TripAdvisor Member
Our room was nothing like what was advertised either. It was dingy with frayed carpetting and stained wallpaper. We were not provided with adequete towels or closet space and there was no desk or table. Three adult women were crammed into a very very tiny room opposite the elevator where trash was collected and transported. Our hallway was dimly lit and smelled of garbage and urine. When we asked to be moved to a larger room with a bit more ambiance, we were treated rudely by the staff. The manager, a Mr. Geoffrey, was especially arrogant. We were eventually moved to a slightly larger room after wasting much of our own precious time facilitating the event. Somehow, in the process, an article of clothing came up missing. The hotel staff was most uncooperative about the missing item. After 12 hours of rediculous attempts to negotiate with the staff and manager regarding the missing item, a missing item report was completed and filed and I called the police. They came to the hotel, I reported the theft, then we left for another hotel where we would hopefully feel more secure. The Ameritania never compensated us for our loss of property or reimbursed us for the nights lodging we forfeited due to their negligence. They are obviously not interested in establishing a reputation as a business dedicated to client satisfaction. If you don't mind the thought of the hotel staff stealing your personal belongings while you're out of your room sightseeing, then treating you like dirt when you protest such treatment, then this is the place for you!
Trendy little hotel

My friends and I went for a night out in NYC, we seached all the discount hotel websites and Ameritania Hotel was one of the cheapest.
We didn't know what to expect. First of all, the location is great. You are within walking distances of Time Square. The lobby has a very trendy modern look and the staff is extremely friendly not to mention ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. There were 4 - 20'something year old girls working behind the counter. The room isn't huge but very comfortable.
It was clean and the furnature was new. The bathroom has also been remodeled recently also. All around, a good place to stay!!!

Ameritania was our home away from home on our annual mother-daughter weekend in the Big Apple! This time we went to New York to celebrate my daughter's 21st birthday. I happened to mention this to the very friendly staff at reception when checking in, and on our return to our room that first night, the General Manager had left us a bottle of California merlot with a personal note. Very nice touch; exceeded my expectation!! We had 2 double beds in our spacious room, a desk, walk in closet and very roomy bathroom. While admiring the lobby decor (contemporary and simplistic) we realized that Ameritania looked very much like The Marcel, where we had stayed last summer. Once in our room we confirmed that the 2 indeed belong to a chain of boutique hotels called Amsterdam Hospitality Group. We intend to try out all the other locations!! But next time, I will ask specifically for a non-smoking room on a non-smoking floor because the hallway on our floor (5th) reeked of stale cigarette smoke. Overall, the great location, clean stylish room, fresh bagel breakfasts and friendly staff more than made up for the smell.
Classic and Fun

I just stayed at this hotel this past week and had a great time. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I was concerned after reading the reviews so I called them up and upgraded to a king size room and bed for an extra $20. The room was very nice. All be it older but I enjoy that type of atmosphere. The design was classic yet industrial and funky. They had a special parking price of $20 for overnight. We really enjoyed ourself and the price was right!
Great Location- But It Stinks
from A TripAdvisor Member
I am an optimist so I will start with good news first. =Location*****5 star for -This place is in great location because it is close to Broadway, Timesquare, Central Park, Museums. My hubby and I were in NY to see play AIDA at Palace Theater and we were able to walk over without a sweat. Also this building is literally connected to building where David Letterman does his show. =Breakfast*****5 star free Breakfast- We checked out at 10:00 am and I was still able to get fresh OJ, coffee, bagels, creamcheese, jelly, very nice. =Parking*****5 stars- Garage is right across street 23 bucks for 24hrs, cheap, no dents.
=Lounge*****Cool looks just like picture. =Room**2 star Room- View- great, I was on 12th floor corner room. Bed - Very comfortable king size bed. We slept like logs. Decor- Cool looks just like picture, if you like contemporary furniture it is nice. Bathroom- Super Tiny. The toilet was so close to mirror I could not stand in front of it without back of my legs touching toilet. No fan, and no counter space for make up. Nice soaps, lotion, etc. Smell--When we first arrived it smelled ok but as day went on the smell of cat pee was overwhelming. It was nice and cool out so we didn't run AC maybe that would have helped. I did not mention to hubby since he did not notice and i didn't want to ruin it for him. =Front Desk Service- Zeroe stars- Whe I arrived they said they could not find my reservation, yet I made it through their website just so I would not have problems. Even after showing her e-mail with confirmation number she said she could not find it and that I should always call to confirm resevations. Duh! The whole point of doing it through internet is convenience. Then shortly after we get to room she calls and says we can not find your reservation we will have to charge $149 , with tax $171 which was fine because that is the price we reserved it at, but what if she had said $300, would I have to leave hotel if I did not agree. The worst part is when I checked my credit card today, and noticed they charged me for two nights instead of one.
I called hotel and she transferred me to voice message. Left message but here I am three hours later with no call back. That is why I felt compelled to give my honest, yet optimistic opinion.

t expect much
from A TripAdvisor Member
The travel agent's review below is correct that the location is great.
As for the hotel; it's okay but I didn't expect too much. I find that a hotel that boasts guests from the film and arts community translates to a hotel that has poor working elevators and small, ill-lit rooms with NO amenities for the business traveller. I had a room that barely fit the queen size bed and had a small tv and no desk. Though the bathroom was a nice size and the shower was lovely. The bagel breakfast is nothing to write about; I preferred to eat at the greasy spoons close by. If you booked a room, ask for a room not facing the street; unless traffic noise doesn't bother you. I won't be staying here again.

A hotel to avoid
from A TripAdvisor Member
The reception staff were rude, unhelpful and arrogant. The public areas are ill-lit and our room was shabby and the furniture tacky. We booked a room for 3 adults and upon arrival we were told that the only room available was a room for 2. Staying at this hotel was a mistake that we shall not repeat.
Very Modern

This place was Awesome. I am a travel agent and was a little weary about this hotel based on the reviews that I read. I just got back yesterday and spent 5 days in NY. The location of this hotel is PERFECT, the bagels and coffee in the morning was a great thing to wake up too, the rooms were clean and the decorative uniqueness is great. The ONLY thing I can say that was wrong, was that the bathrooms are very tiny, if you get a room with 2 beds, you'll get a small bathrm...a room with 1 bed you'll get a big bathrm..but it doesnt really matter if you are just gonna pretty much be sleeping there and are out all day. I recommend this place! Its great! :)
tip van flip

This hotel has ok rooms but also very small, (cheap looking) rooms, i`ve been here twice and both times the first room that was appointed to us was a big dissapointment (smal, not clean, old) but when I asked an other room it was a lot better (both times)because I dont like this kind of treatment I won`t come here for a third visit.
I love NY
from A TripAdvisor Member
We visited NYC for the first time in June 2003. I chose the Ameritania Hotel over the internet and wasn't sure what to expect. However, upon arrival we were very happy with our choice. The hotel is colorful and fun with modern decor and the lounge off the lobby is a great quiet place for a drink after a day of walking around the City. After reading all the reviews I expected our room to be a tiny closet, but we were very happy with the size of our room. Our party of four was very comfortable and we loved our view. Ask for a corner room, you get more windows and a little extra space! The Ameritania is in a great location and the bagel breakfast was a great way to start off a NY morning. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone.
