from A TripAdvisor MemberWow...phenomenal hotel!!
from A TripAdvisor MemberBoy, was I in for a surprise!! The staff was exceptional, the room was amazing and the location of the hotel was outstanding. One of the biggest things that I experienced was a great feeling of comfort. I felt like the hotel was my second home and I have never experienced this before in any other hotel.
My husband who is incredibly picky and has a great eye for detail was floored by how much better the executive desk and chair was compared to at home and he especially appreciated the use of lights, extra plugs and dimmer switches throughout the room. The attention to detail in the room's layout and decor was very apparent.
Anyways, if you are reading this, stop researching and book a room at this fine hotel...you will not be disappointed!!
Nice, but not as nice as expected
from zamomI had a few problems. I had requested early check-in so that I could dress and prepare for a business meeting, but this request was not honored. When I asked about internet cables, maps of NYC, and coupons to the Empire State Building, the staff claimed to be out of all of these. They did not offer to accommodate me in any other way. Also, the door to the bathroom was broken and could not close, a problem because we were four people in the room. The bedspread on the bed was stained on the side closest to the bed. The staff did not seem to be knowledgeable about things to do with kids in New York (didn't know where the zoo was, couldn't recommend restaurants, etc.). The front desk, while very personable, was not very efficient. While my small kids and I waited in line for assistance, one staff member spent at least 15 minutes helping a young guest choose a club to go out to that night. Finally, when I called the hotel the week before my stay and asked for concierge help with getting a theater ticket, she said she would do so, but never ended up calling me back.
The plusses: The room was spacious and had a wonderful view. The staff was very friendly to my children. The location of the hotel was terrific (near Macy's, lots of shopping, etc.). There was a really good Chinese restaurant right around the corner from the hotel -- go left out of hotel, turn left on Lexington, it's on the left. However, I usually stay at the Casablanca, and I'll probably go back there.
Great place overall
from ceilidancer5No offense but the no smoking restaurant laws should be extended to hotels!
Definitely worth a try!
ve heard about Affinia Dumont.
from A TripAdvisor MemberMy husband and I got a one-bedroom suite. The room was stylish, cozy and very clean. We had great views of the city from both the living area and bedroom. The bedroom had built-in storage with plenty of room for clothes and other belongings. We could control the temperture separately for the bedroom and living area. We even had our own remote-controlled stereo.
The Thai restaurant next door was great and had very reasonable prices. The Barking Dog, which is in the same building as the Dumont and provides room service, was also good and had a quaint courtyard. (The BD did seem a little pricey to me for what you got, but was probably average for NYC.)
With a subway stop a block up, a corner grocery and drugstore, and several restaurants nearby, it felt like our own private neighborhood in the big city.
The elevators were always available and very efficient. Also, the staff were extremely courteous and professional.
One note: The locals and cab drivers seem to know the place as the Dumont Plaza, which I assume is a former name. This can cause some confusion when taking a cab, so keep that in mind.
t Wait to Get Back!
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe will DEFINATELY be staying here again!
wonderful hotel!!
from A TripAdvisor MemberSpacious, Gracious and Well Located
from BJr970Plush bedding with padded leather headboards. Well-outfitted marble baths were compact, but with a plethora of accessories and conveniences. Toiletries were signature blends from the Affinia Spa on the premises. Rooms feature a fully stocked galley style kitchen. I have never seen so much workable desk space in a hotel before, although the faux black leather-look desktop was cheezy. An comfortable Aeron desk chair was a nice surprise. The modern decor featured many unique lighting opportunities, all with dimmer switches. Large screen TVs (maybe 32 inch?) and a stereo system were on hand, as well as Sony Dream Machine bedside alarm clock and CD players. Materials in the room were in good condition with minimal signs of wear and tear. An on site restaurant, The Barking Dog, supplies the room service, which appeared to be decently priced. A total of only 7 rooms on our floor provided plenty of quiet and privacy for our group of six. Street noises were mild and were of the of police siren variety. Heavy cream draperies and mesh sheers were on the wall to wall windows. The bellstaff, especially Christopher, was great. Christopher was most helpful and friendly. The rate for the two suites was $429. In comparison to what you get in a standard hotel room for $250-$400 a night, it was a good value. Parking for an SUV was $42. We kept our vehicle parked and our luggage checked in until 8 PM on the day we checked out. Upon our return, Christopher swiftly gathered our bags and our SUV was waiting out front for us in no time. Just a few blocks from the Empire State Building and Macy's, and with nice restaurants nearby, the Affinia Dumont is a good choice for a weekend trip or a romantic getaway.
Top Local Tips for New York City
Getting around NYC To see and soak everything up, do a lot of walking if you can. We must have walked 30 odd miles!! The subway is great and easy to use, a green, blue and red line run up and down town only, not across town. We bought a metro card each day from our 3rd day there. For 10 dollars you get 12 rides, which is 2 rides free and we found this the best value. Unlike the UK underground, two or more people can use one metrocard by passing it back at the turnstile. It is not valid for only one day either, so if you have rides left on your card, you can use it again the following day.
Park your car I highly recommend leaving your car garaged and experiencing the taxicab & subway scenes to get around. Taxis tend to be reasonable to nearby destinations (e.g. Theatre District/TimesSquare). Subway is very inexpensive and accessible when you're not in a hurry. ENJOY NYC!~
NBC tour-yes, Red bus-no NBC Studios tour on Friday 3pm- We saw some cast members on the Saturday Night Live set- Keenan, Bill Hader(waved to us!) and the guest star: Ellen Page. We did the red bus tour Grey Line- disappointed. The buses were infrequent, and often would just stop to tell us they were full and to wait for the next one. Plus, some of the tour guides are down right obnoxious, with one guy continuously repeating "Do you understand me?"-Ugh! we had to hop off in Chinatown it was so awful. Another-an old New Yorker lady with a major nasty attitude. Nearby Fagiolini restaurant, it was deLISH. pasta with pesto and garlic dish --omg was it good! The Barking Dog restaurant just so-so, & slow. If you walk out the hotel and turn left, The Empire State Building is a few blocks down, walk out the hotel and turn right, there are some nearby restaurants, shops. Family of 4 ice skating at Rockefeller=$100, but just tell yourself the memories will be priceless. Cab between hotel- LGA $16-18 each way.
