Historical Traveller Reviews of Mohonk Mountain House Hotel

WAY OVER PRICED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful. The rooms are clean but small and the lower rate that is advertised is not the real price. Add gratutities, and taxes with very FEW activities included and so so meals & service. Stay at a nearby hotel, enjoy the grounds for $15.00 and save yourself a whopping $800.00 for a one night stay.

Exceeded Expectations

from DRace
I was sorry to read the review by the honeymoon couple who encountered such disappointing guests. Our trip to Mohonk far exceeded our expectations. We were traveling to New York City and wanted a short trip to the country within an easy driving distance. The property is quite extraordinary and while extremely old, we found it very comfortable and charming. At over 100 years old we knew it could not offer all the most modern amenities, but its historical charm and other unique features made it well worth it. We booked a tower room which was very spacious - it reminded me of a trip to someone's grandmother's. We had heard from some in the City not to expect much from the food, but were very pleased with the dining room fare. The dinners were quite good and the wine list nice. The only complaint I had was the seating.
While acceptable, we never were given a table in one of the better locations. Ours were always kind of in the middle, but they were ok.
The experience was somewhat like a cruise, although you are not seated with others. We did not find any unpleasant guests. The grounds were beautiful and we enjoyed our walks through the fall foilage. It was a wonderful getaway and we would recommend it to others.

GREAT STAFF AND SERVICE BUT AWEFUL HONEYMOON EXPERIENCE

from A TripAdvisor Member
If rubbing elbows with the some of the snobbiest and most racist patrons is your idea of a great vacation, then Mohonk is the place for you. After seeing Monhonk on the Travel channel we decided to vacation there on our honeymoon. We must say that the staff were friendly and helpful. Our experience here, however, was more than disappointing. The decor was very dark and depressing (this is a historic landmark but the decor of the hotel was eerie and not at all romantic). The hallways were similar to the hallways of the Overlook Hotel depicted in the movie "The Shining" (imagine our surprise when we later discovered during our stay that Stephen King actually stayed at this hotel and used it as his inspiration to write "The Shining" as reported by one of the staff). The rooms (ours was the Victorian with the fireplace and balcony--sounds romantic and the perfect place for our honeymoon) was tiny and very drab. The hotel was very hot---no doubt because most of the guests are older. There is no form of modern climate control.. The room was very hot and we had to leave the door to the balcony open during the night to try to cool the room (we stayed here Nov. 17-19).
Our dining (breakfast, lunch and dinner) was ruined by comments and conversations of other patrons pertaining to their extreme dislike for the middle class and various religious and ethnic backgrounds. My husband and I are both professionals and were offended and extremely uncomfortable in the almost hostile environment that was created by these individuals. I can only hope that when the staff members encounter such behavior by guests that action is taken to correct this.

I dream about Lake Mohonk

from A TripAdvisor Member
When I was in college in New Paltz, I worked one summer/fall at Mohonk Mountain House. I still dream about the incredible foliage, the sunsets from the gazebos, swimming the circumference of the lake, hiking the trails, the beauty of the gardens, the thunderstorms, sleeping on the cliffs...It was hard to leave. I've done lots of hiking and backpacking and traveling in the US and Europe, and I've never seen anyplace as beautiful as Lake Mohonk and its surroundings. It is breathtakingly scenic all year round.

i went to Mohonk for a wedding and i have to say it is one of the most beautiful places i have ever been. i am planning a winter trip us there and i am looking forward to it.

Breathtaking scenary but outrageous price.

Wonderful place for hiking, horseback riding and boating, and foliage admiring. Hotel rooms way below expectation. Tiny, no TV, thin-walls, no clock even!! No swimming pool either. Dinner not much better than a decent college dorm meal. Breakfast and lunch (both buffet style) fared better. If you go there, pick Sep - Oct.

Good food, beautiful place

from A TripAdvisor Member
Mohonk Mountain House is a beautiful place to get away from it all. We stayed overnight (Mon-Tues) during near-peak leaf season. The service was friendly and professional. The food generally was very good. The rooms were clean. The activities were well planned. Everything wasn't perfect, but overall we had a wonderful time and I can't wait to go back.We arrived around 2 pm Monday afternoon (check-in time isn't until 4 pm), but there was a long line of cars at the entrance to the hotel waiting to be unloaded. So we decided to just go park the car and doing something else for a while. We hiked up to the tower--about a 25-minute walk uphill, a little steep in some places, but lots of benches and little gazebos where you can stop, sit and enjoy the scenery. And when you get to the top -- what a view! -- a 360 degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. We arrived back at the hotel just in time for tea--served at 4 pm on the dot. Several trays piled high with delicious cookies were set out, and hot brewed tea was served from urns by the staff. Jay Ungar and Molly Mason played fiddle and guitar, to our delight. The house has many beautiful public rooms, including the Lake Lounge, a library and several TV rooms. Some of the floors in the halls are a bit uneven, but I guess that's to be expected since the house is over 100 years old and mostly wood. The elevators were prompt and large. Our room was clean and well furnished, although we weren't able to cool it off enough to want to build a fire, despite leaving the windows open with the provided fan blowing cool air in from the outside. The bathroom was fairly large and had newer fixtures. The best part was the rocking chairs on the balcony overlooking the lake. At night you could see the little lights part of the way along the trail up to the tower. In the afternoon, we took a rowboat out in the lake, which is smaller than you would think from the photos, but still beautiful. Our dinner reservations were at 7 pm, and it wasn't crowded when we arrived. There was a cozy fire in the fireplace. The room quickly filled up, until our waiter, who was friendly and knowledgeable, was overloaded. We ordered a reasonably priced bottle of local cabernet, but I was surprised when a hefty service charge and tax were added, nearly doubling the cost. Next time I'll just bring my own wine to enjoy in my room before dinner. The rolls were not warm but still good--crusty on the outside and tender on the inside. The soups were good, the shrimp in phyllo appetizer just so-so, and the fried oysters were not good—greasy and small. We all ordered the filet mignon, which was delicious and perfectly cooked. It was served with sweet potatoes au gratin and asparagus, which both were pretty good. Also on the menu were baked chicken with stuffing, some fish dishes, pork, etc. The desserts were not as wonderful as I had heard, and they had run out of one of the selections.Breakfast the next morning was great. They have a full buffet, with eggs, potatoes, fruit, sausage and bacon, omelets made to order and staff continually making pancakes and waffles. The waffles were outstanding, with many toppings to choose from. But the potatoes were not very hot, and the muffins weren't warm. The wait staff was attentive with coffee and juice. We had a lovely view of the Catskills. As a comparison, a few days later we had the breakfast buffet at the Marriott Marquis on Times Square in Manhattan, which was similar in offerings, but the Mohonk breakfast was much, much better. The lunch buffet was also good, and included lots of salads, baked fish, pecan-crusted chicken, white and wild rice, mashed potatoes, green beans, squash, a variety of breads and carving stations with ham and turkey. However, again our waiter became overworked, despite his working fast and furiously, and it being a self-service buffet except for the soup, drinks and dessert. For dessert we all had cheesecake, which was fine but not outstanding. We enjoyed other activities at Mohonk during our short stay, including the house tour, given by a very knowledgeable employee. We walked around the gardens, hiked around the lake, took photos and bought souvenirs at the gift shop. Check out was easy. Overall, I recommend it highly.

Bad food

Mohonk Mountain House is a beautifully maintained resort with excellent sporting services. HOWEVER, the dining experience is extremely poor. The food is almost inedible. If your idea of a good meal is eating at McDonald's, then you might enjoy eating at the Mohonk Mountain House.

Return to a peaceful Life

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was our first visit to the Mohonk Mountain House. It was very interesting. It was a return to calmer, restful days. We did not watch TV listen to radio for a couple of days. The rooms were plain but very clean. The dining was an experience to be enjoyed. A personal waiter who was well trained and a selection of four course meals as fine as any top notch resteraunt. The best part for us was the hiking trails and the glorious mountain views. Our only regret was that our two days went by to fast. Friendly hosts, staff that cater to your every wish. All at a fair price!

Short of expectations

Any desire to cuddle up in a cocktail lounge--not here you won't, there is none.

How about hot weather, I know it's New Paltz--but it was H-O-T, no A/C (it's the mountains you know) it was hot, for this much room rate at least a window unit. Never again it the summer, rather never again, full stop.

Scenery - spectacular. Services - superb. Activities - excellent.
