When making the initial reservations, the staff highly recommended this room (Unit 135) as the honeymoon suite and it was described as the only one with a romantic bay view, fireplace, duplex, and terrace (terraces are only on the first floor). Never once did anyone truthfully disclose that this construction was going to occur during our stay. Nor did they say that the only on-site restaurant would be closed during our stay.
We requested to speak to the manager and received different responses of her arrival --- in one hour, the next day and then in two days. The manager was not to arrive for two days. The manager's response was that they did not have to disclose this on-site construction inconvenience information. Further embarrassed and humiliated by the manager yelling at me in the lobby with what she felt was justified. She offered another room (third floor, no terrace, additional toilet big deal) but we were not interested in a downgrade. They sent a bottle of wine for our inconvenience.
Had we been truthfully told so much construction would be occurring we would never have scheduled our trip here. Further, due to their cancellation policy, we were not to receive a refund if we cancelled the minute we arrived. (Signed contract reads cancellation made within 10 days of arrival date your deposit is forfeited.)
Unbeknownst to us, the duplex's refrigerator setting was on #7 which was way too high a setting and caused the groceries we purchased for afternoon lunch and cocktails to be destroyed with freezer burn. Ms. Nessel apologized and asked for a receipt. We did not keep the receipt from the grocers and requested her to come to the room to see the problem created. She declined so I brought out the destroyed food and with disgust dumped it on the front desk. And again she offered nothing.
There were many other service and amenity problems. With my four generations in the hotel business, I have never experienced such poor, insulting and arrogant customer service. I cannot understand why they would sell the room wsith construction going on particularly with endorsement from the staff. When asked who I could escalate notification of all that had happened, I was given a business card with a PO Box and told to write to the Board and furthermore told they did not have to provide any names for contact information. In my opinion, if you have nothing to hide (and have great pride in products and services for which you sell to the public) you hide nothing. Having been insulted enough, we aborted our stay at the Manor leaving earlier than our reservations.
We will not return and warn that even if you inquire beforehand, the representatives of the property collectively displayed no integrity, unsatisfactory customer services and lack of grace in this entire situation. The Montauk Manor is a disgraceful representative of not only the hospitality industry but also as a Chamber member and representative of Montauk.
A swift refund for a scheduled romantic anniversary and gracious response would have been the least this property could have offered. We left with bitter Montauk memories.
