Old and broken

First the good news, the cleaning staff is quite good and the hotel is kept clean. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant was good but a little on the high side for price.

Now the bad. When you turn on the water, both hot and cold, it gradually turns to hot water. The cold water only turn cold after about 10 minutes of allowing it to run. We had two rooms and it did this in both of the rooms.

In order to get ice you have to ask at the front desk counter and they provide you with a bag of ice. The hotel does not have machines accessible by hotel guests.

Generally the hotel looks old and worn. It does not seem to have been renovated since the 1980 Olympics. The carpeting needs to be replaced, the wallpaper is peeling from the walls in places and the furnishings are stained. They are working on it currently but I did not see any changes when we were there.

The rooms are large, a sitting room and a separate bedroom area. However, the furnishings in the sitting room were old and stained. In addition, the only TV was in front of the bed and was not viewable from the sitting area.

The blanket on the bed was ripped in a number of places. While I would accept something like this as normal in a $35/night Days Inn I was not happy about it in a $100+/night upscale hotel.

Minor gripe: while the TV must have had 100 cable stations the TV did not show you what station number you were on or allow you to just type in the number of a station on the remote so you could not directly go to a station or find programs.

It appears that there are many good hotels in the area which are better and cheaper then the Northwoods Inn.
Definitely on the upswing!

We were expecting the worst, after hearing about the hotel under the previous ownership. What a pleasant surprise! Organized staff, almost everyone was friendly. Obviously they have a long way to go, but definitely on the right track. Rooms are somewhat narrow, as one might expect in a historic property, carpets need to be replaced, but the hotel was warm and clean. Parking is an issue; we found it easier to park in the public lot about 75 yards away.
The dining is excellent. Gracious, professional service, in a rustic setting. Breakfasts are among the best we have found. And the highlight was live music all the nights we were there. The style and quality varied blues, bluegrass, folk, and rock & roll. If you aren't looking for the Waldorf, this is the place to stay in Lake Placid.

Watch out for cancellation policy

from hockeydad2
I called 48 hours before check in to cancel, and was told hotel has a 14 day cancellation policy. This is not mentioned anywhere on the web site, so be aware. I lost my $ 95 deposit. This has never happened to me before, and I think people should be aware of this policy that I find unusual.

We took a spur of the moment adventure. Took a drive from central New York to Lake Placid and arrived 11:30 pm on a Saturday night. The gentleman who checked us in was very pleasant.

The outside of the hotel is very nice, very inviting. The hotel is right in the middle of the main street on Lake Placid. Very convenient. The lobby was large, and looked like a nice hotel. (The stairs had mud on them, the only dirty item in the lobby.) There was a nice looking bar area and a pleasant restaurant. The restaurant was closed, of course, but looked nice. Everything is decorated in the warm, Adirondack feel. There was a sign that basically said to pardon their appearance while renovating. We were checked in quickly.

THEN IT STARTED: We were on the 4th floor facing the street. When we opened the door to the room, an overpowering, foul, musty smell hit us. It was a mixture of strong, perfumy cleaning fluid over an old musty attic smell. As we walked in we immediately considered leaving due to the strong odor. We thought we'd give it a chance and look around the room. I have to admit, the room did look clean. You can tell they did renovate the room. Like an old house, you can see some bumpy areas under the paint, but over all they did a fairly decent job. The bathroom was updated and looked clean. The room was very long, and not too wide. You didn't have much room to walk between the TV and the bed, but overall there was plenty of room . The closet did not have a door. The window area covered the entire front wall. The curtains, when closed did not fit all the way across the window/wall area which did let in a fair amount of light from the street. I don't know that when morning arrived if it would give you sufficient darkness after the sun rose (we ended up leaving at 3 a.m.). The offer Tempurpedic beds. I thought those were comfortable. That was the main reason we thought we would stick it out over that smell. The beds. (We thought we would "get used to the smell" after a while. But we didn't. When we got home, we had to wash all of our chothes in our suitcases and air ourtthe suitcases because they were permeated with that odor. YUK!)

BUT..... there is NO SOUNDPROOFING AT ALL! A couple of doors down connected to the hotel is a bar that was very popular with a younger crowd. Since there is no smoking allowed in any New York State restaurant/bar, the intoxicated people have to go out onto the sidewalk to smoke. Well, they are NOT quiet at all! You can hear all of their loud conversations and yelling through the older windows - even all the way up on the 4th floor. Then you can hear people in the hotel walking in their rooms, taking showers and can hear their voices and TV's through the walls. Granted this is an older building so for the price (we paid only $89 for a room with a King size bed) if you don't mind getting woke up from "normal hotel noise" consider staying here........

Now I don't know if this is a frequent experience but the noise was IMPOSSIBLE the night we were there. We went to bed at midnight and for three solid hours, there was a steady stream of drunk, loud, absolutely rude and immature people walking down the hall while yelling, pounding, screaming and slamming doors. The couple next to us were having a severe problem. Apparently he had talked to some brunette, (he was drunk) and she did not like her husband doing that (she was drunk). She let him know it, he retaliated, and loudly. This went on for 45 minutes. It only stopped next to us because a friend of theirs pounded on their door, screamed at them, and they retreated to a room down the hall. This was 3 a.m. and we got dressed, packed, and left. As we were leaving, the fight resumed down the hall and had escalated to a large number of people screaming and threating to kill each other....

As we checked out, the same gentleman at the front desk was very curteous and understanding. He did say that this happens at times.

So overall, the room was just adequate (old covered up with new paint and rug), comfortable bed, no soundproofing and smells. As for the drunks, I cannot say if this happens all of the time, but the front desk clerk did not seem surprised at all and easily refunded our money. I would never stay there again.

We will keep coming back!!

This is our fourth time staying at the Northwoods Inn and as usual we had a wonderful experience! Everything from the newly finished room to the extremely comfortable bed to the most magnificent view of White Face makes Northwoods hands down the best deal in town. Walking out the front doors and stepping out onto Main Street makes our trip stress free/drive free. You are right downtown in the middle of everything. It is certainly a relaxing getaway that we will take advantage of for years to come. In my opinion there is absolutely no better deal in Lake Placid!!

Quaint Hotel in A great Location!

from RJunco
Last winter, my girlfriends and I had the wonderful experience of staying at the Northwoods Inn during our "ski getaway." The hotel has a cozy bar and a restaurant located right in the hotel. I can't say enough about the high quality of service that we received from the staff. The rooms were very large (ours had a couch) and the beds were to die for! How many hotels offer Tempurpedic Beds? Additionally, the hotel is located right in the heart of Lake Placid- you can walk to the shops, bars and restaurants.

I must say that my last visit to the northwoods inn was quite possibly my greatest travel experience to date. The hotel staff was very attentive and supremely interested in making my stay as enjoyable as possible. Their attention to EVERY detail and their dedication to customer service went beyond anything I have ever experienced. The rooms were lavish, clean, and a perfect break from the excietment of Lake Placid. I WOULD LIVE AT THE NORTHWOODS INN IF I COULD!!! I can't wait to get back and see my new favorite hotel!

Run from Northwoods Inn

from juneprudhomme
If ever in the Lake Placid region, I highly recommend you do not, I repeat do not stay at the Northwoods Inn. The property looks nice from the outside, but it is very deceiving. First of all, our room key(s ) did not work. Maintenance could not open the room door either. Two different attempts at cutting new keys failed, and we just had to deal with jiggling, pushing, pulling, etc., until the door finally opened. Entering the room the first thing you see is torn, stained indoor-outdoor carpeting (in many spots), old stained furniture, cracked ceramic tile floor in the bathroom, and to top it off, the shower curtain had mold all over the bottom of it. That was day one....on day two the occupants of the hotel were without water for at least six hours due to a water main break. No water in toilets, sinks, showers, etc., and no compensation for the inconvenience at all. The only good thing I can say is that the bed was comfortable. Not nearly enough to get me to go there again.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at the Northwoods Inn. After reviewing your posting to Tripadvisor, I am disturbed to hear of your recent stay. It sounds as though you stayed in one of our less desirable rooms, and for that, I am deeply sorry.

I can assure you that although some of our rooms need cosmetic upgrades, we are constantly working to improve the conditions of our rooms. For this period of transition, the vast majority of our rooms have experienced these necessary upgrades while some are in progress.

The areas I can assure you and all of our guests are that our rooms are clean, our guest service is very strong, our beds are comfortable and we will continue to offer VALUE and an outstanding location.

My attempts to reach out to you were unsuccessful, but I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you and invite you back to our property. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time. Thank you again for your feedback.

t Stay Here!!

from mogulmikee
Where do I start?? When we checked-in, while the lady at the desk was looking for our reservation, she swore twice - very unprofessional! After some confusion, we got checked-in and went to our room. The room was very warm, it was hot out, but the hotel told us over the phone that there was air conditioning. Indeed there was, but it was inadequate and could not cool the room down at all. We also had to kill 8 spiders. We stayed in the Lakeside Rooms...They did not tell us that these rooms were also "barside." Because it was so warm, we had to open the windows, and of course, the bar was loud, very loud. We had to listen to old guys trying to pick up women all night! During the night, the air conditioning turned off..Yet it was still warm. I went to the thermostat in the hallway to find that someone had turned it off! And it was still registering 78 degrees?? So I turned it back on, only to have it turned back off shortly thereafter.

In the morning, upon checkout, they didn't even inquire about our stay. I had a small cooler and asked if I could get some ice. They told me that they have no ice machine. Yet, they operate a restaurant! They clearly did not want to part with any ice for their guest. I can not imagine staying here again ever, they do not care about the customer experience whatsoever!

The Northwoods Inn is undergoing a tremendous renovation within the hotel and we continue to work on our rooms, staff and customer service. Since our hotel is located directly on Main Street, in the middle of downtown Lake Placid, occasionally a noisy group on the street will disrupt our guests. With the hotel located in the middle of town, there are a number of restaurants and bars located in the vicinity and we pride ourselves in being able to provide our guests with a prime location. We do try to contact the local authorities when a problem does arise and the local authorities handle the situation if and when it occurs. During your stay, we were unaware of the noise level for that evening and we did not have any other complaints from the guests at that time.

Our hotel does provide air conditioning in all of the rooms and we are troubled to hear that your room was not sufficient. We will surely replace that unit if it is causing such discomfort. The ice machine is located at the Front Desk in the Main Lobby of the hotel and we would be more than happy to retrieve any amount of ice at anytime. Although I cannot imagine who would have treated any of our guests the same way you were treated I can assure you we would not tolerate our staff to speak to any of our guests in such a tone. We closely monitor our employees with proper training and we are known to have a better performance standard with our customer service and warm family sentiments in our establishment.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and would welcome an opportunity to invite you back to Lake Placid to see many of the wonderful improvements we have made since even your recent visit. Thank you again for your feedback.

Not what we expected

from bschlar
We had read the good reviews and about the renovations so were very disappointed with our room at Northwoods Inn. The room had old furniture that has many stains. There were no pictures on the walls and no baseboards. The wallpaper was peeling and ceiling needed repairs. The curtains were also old and dingy. Maybe this room hasn't been renovated yet. They did say that they weren't busy so we wondered why there wasn't a better room. Our lake view room had a very limited view of the lake. However, the room was very clean and the staff was friendly.

We would like to thank you for visiting our hotel in Downtown Lake Placid and would like to extend our deepest apologies in regards to your stay with us. We do know that the evening you stayed with us was a day after a large checkout from the previous weekend. Although there is no excuse for having a dissatisfied guest, this might explain the reason for the lack of rooms that we could offer our guests to switch from if they were unsatisfied with the room that they were currently occupying.
We do have a number of rooms in our hotel that are undergoing renovations including wallpaper, carpets and small repairs to the walls and ceilings. To this, we would not have had any of our pictures on the walls. We continue to make great strides with the conditioning of the hotel and its outlets and will have the hotel to its greatest potential with the continuing efforts from our staff and from comments such as these.

Please call me the next time you are in Lake Placid as I would like the opportunity to introduce myself and make certain your stay is most enjoyable. Thank you again for your thoughts.

Renovations look great!!!

from Glenwooddean
We are a frequent guest at Northwoods Inn and really impressed by the new changes to the facility. There is a new
elevator and the lobby has recently been freshly painted.
The dining rooms have also been renovated with new
furnishings and new menus. The FOOD WAS GREAT!!!
The $20 a bottle for any wine took the challenge out of ordering wine. Keep up the good work Northwood Inn, it is great to have
such a great value of a hotel in Lake Placid on Main Street
only 2 hours from Albany. We will be back.

thumbs up...

Just returned from a 2 day stay at the Northwoods Inn in Lake Placid. The view from our room of Mirror Lake and the mountains was outstanding. The room itself was very comfortable and well appointed. The price and location also were excellent. Although, we had heard that parking was somewhat cramped, we didn't have any problems. Both restaurants were very good. The bar needs to be air conditioned and could use a few more local beers on tap. Another plus was the decor throughout. I would certainly stay here again.

Top Local Tips for Lake Placid

THe Coffee bean coffee shop and the boathouse restaurant YOu absolutely have to visit the Coffee BEan coffee shop in the Alpine Mall when you are here. THey have great coffee and a great view of mirror lake!! THe owner is very curteous and friendly..also they smoothies there are awesome!! We also ate at the BoatHouse restaurant and it was sooo beautiful!! Also our waiter was knowledgeable, nice and prompt with our food!!!

Great Place for Outdoor fun I am from Saranac Lake / Lake Placid and come back to visit often not only to see friends and family, but to hike, swim, and enjoy the wonderful mountains. There are a couple of outlet stores, a nice toy store, and other gift shops that are fun too. Although, main street is about it for shopping so plan to get into the woods and experience nature. I would suggest going to a sport store (EMS) and getting a Adirondack hiking/camping guide. These explain what is out there, how to get there, how to prepare, and also provides a topographic map.

Timing Is Everything If you're not going to Lake Placid for a specific event (horseshow, lacrosse, Ironman, etc.) try to plan your vacation for a period when none of these events are being held. We went from Monday to Friday when there were no special events in town and we had a lovely time with no crowds, no lines.
