The dining is excellent. Gracious, professional service, in a rustic setting. Breakfasts are among the best we have found. And the highlight was live music all the nights we were there. The style and quality varied blues, bluegrass, folk, and rock & roll. If you aren't looking for the Waldorf, this is the place to stay in Lake Placid.

from bal1234The outside of the hotel is very nice, very inviting. The hotel is right in the middle of the main street on Lake Placid. Very convenient. The lobby was large, and looked like a nice hotel. (The stairs had mud on them, the only dirty item in the lobby.) There was a nice looking bar area and a pleasant restaurant. The restaurant was closed, of course, but looked nice. Everything is decorated in the warm, Adirondack feel. There was a sign that basically said to pardon their appearance while renovating. We were checked in quickly.
THEN IT STARTED: We were on the 4th floor facing the street. When we opened the door to the room, an overpowering, foul, musty smell hit us. It was a mixture of strong, perfumy cleaning fluid over an old musty attic smell. As we walked in we immediately considered leaving due to the strong odor. We thought we'd give it a chance and look around the room. I have to admit, the room did look clean. You can tell they did renovate the room. Like an old house, you can see some bumpy areas under the paint, but over all they did a fairly decent job. The bathroom was updated and looked clean. The room was very long, and not too wide. You didn't have much room to walk between the TV and the bed, but overall there was plenty of room . The closet did not have a door. The window area covered the entire front wall. The curtains, when closed did not fit all the way across the window/wall area which did let in a fair amount of light from the street. I don't know that when morning arrived if it would give you sufficient darkness after the sun rose (we ended up leaving at 3 a.m.). The offer Tempurpedic beds. I thought those were comfortable. That was the main reason we thought we would stick it out over that smell. The beds. (We thought we would "get used to the smell" after a while. But we didn't. When we got home, we had to wash all of our chothes in our suitcases and air ourtthe suitcases because they were permeated with that odor. YUK!)
BUT..... there is NO SOUNDPROOFING AT ALL! A couple of doors down connected to the hotel is a bar that was very popular with a younger crowd. Since there is no smoking allowed in any New York State restaurant/bar, the intoxicated people have to go out onto the sidewalk to smoke. Well, they are NOT quiet at all! You can hear all of their loud conversations and yelling through the older windows - even all the way up on the 4th floor. Then you can hear people in the hotel walking in their rooms, taking showers and can hear their voices and TV's through the walls. Granted this is an older building so for the price (we paid only $89 for a room with a King size bed) if you don't mind getting woke up from "normal hotel noise" consider staying here........
Now I don't know if this is a frequent experience but the noise was IMPOSSIBLE the night we were there. We went to bed at midnight and for three solid hours, there was a steady stream of drunk, loud, absolutely rude and immature people walking down the hall while yelling, pounding, screaming and slamming doors. The couple next to us were having a severe problem. Apparently he had talked to some brunette, (he was drunk) and she did not like her husband doing that (she was drunk). She let him know it, he retaliated, and loudly. This went on for 45 minutes. It only stopped next to us because a friend of theirs pounded on their door, screamed at them, and they retreated to a room down the hall. This was 3 a.m. and we got dressed, packed, and left. As we were leaving, the fight resumed down the hall and had escalated to a large number of people screaming and threating to kill each other....
As we checked out, the same gentleman at the front desk was very curteous and understanding. He did say that this happens at times.
So overall, the room was just adequate (old covered up with new paint and rug), comfortable bed, no soundproofing and smells. As for the drunks, I cannot say if this happens all of the time, but the front desk clerk did not seem surprised at all and easily refunded our money. I would never stay there again.
We will keep coming back!!

from juneprudhommeThank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at the Northwoods Inn. After reviewing your posting to Tripadvisor, I am disturbed to hear of your recent stay. It sounds as though you stayed in one of our less desirable rooms, and for that, I am deeply sorry.
I can assure you that although some of our rooms need cosmetic upgrades, we are constantly working to improve the conditions of our rooms. For this period of transition, the vast majority of our rooms have experienced these necessary upgrades while some are in progress.
The areas I can assure you and all of our guests are that our rooms are clean, our guest service is very strong, our beds are comfortable and we will continue to offer VALUE and an outstanding location.
My attempts to reach out to you were unsuccessful, but I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you and invite you back to our property. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time. Thank you again for your feedback.
t Stay Here!!
from mogulmikeeIn the morning, upon checkout, they didn't even inquire about our stay. I had a small cooler and asked if I could get some ice. They told me that they have no ice machine. Yet, they operate a restaurant! They clearly did not want to part with any ice for their guest. I can not imagine staying here again ever, they do not care about the customer experience whatsoever!
Our hotel does provide air conditioning in all of the rooms and we are troubled to hear that your room was not sufficient. We will surely replace that unit if it is causing such discomfort. The ice machine is located at the Front Desk in the Main Lobby of the hotel and we would be more than happy to retrieve any amount of ice at anytime. Although I cannot imagine who would have treated any of our guests the same way you were treated I can assure you we would not tolerate our staff to speak to any of our guests in such a tone. We closely monitor our employees with proper training and we are known to have a better performance standard with our customer service and warm family sentiments in our establishment.
We sincerely appreciate your patience and would welcome an opportunity to invite you back to Lake Placid to see many of the wonderful improvements we have made since even your recent visit. Thank you again for your feedback.
Not what we expected
from bschlarWe do have a number of rooms in our hotel that are undergoing renovations including wallpaper, carpets and small repairs to the walls and ceilings. To this, we would not have had any of our pictures on the walls. We continue to make great strides with the conditioning of the hotel and its outlets and will have the hotel to its greatest potential with the continuing efforts from our staff and from comments such as these.
Please call me the next time you are in Lake Placid as I would like the opportunity to introduce myself and make certain your stay is most enjoyable. Thank you again for your thoughts.
Renovations look great!!!
from Glenwooddeanelevator and the lobby has recently been freshly painted.
The dining rooms have also been renovated with new
furnishings and new menus. The FOOD WAS GREAT!!!
The $20 a bottle for any wine took the challenge out of ordering wine. Keep up the good work Northwood Inn, it is great to have
such a great value of a hotel in Lake Placid on Main Street
only 2 hours from Albany. We will be back.
thumbs up...

Great Place for Outdoor fun I am from Saranac Lake / Lake Placid and come back to visit often not only to see friends and family, but to hike, swim, and enjoy the wonderful mountains. There are a couple of outlet stores, a nice toy store, and other gift shops that are fun too. Although, main street is about it for shopping so plan to get into the woods and experience nature. I would suggest going to a sport store (EMS) and getting a Adirondack hiking/camping guide. These explain what is out there, how to get there, how to prepare, and also provides a topographic map.
Timing Is Everything If you're not going to Lake Placid for a specific event (horseshow, lacrosse, Ironman, etc.) try to plan your vacation for a period when none of these events are being held. We went from Monday to Friday when there were no special events in town and we had a lovely time with no crowds, no lines.

Now the bad. When you turn on the water, both hot and cold, it gradually turns to hot water. The cold water only turn cold after about 10 minutes of allowing it to run. We had two rooms and it did this in both of the rooms.
In order to get ice you have to ask at the front desk counter and they provide you with a bag of ice. The hotel does not have machines accessible by hotel guests.
Generally the hotel looks old and worn. It does not seem to have been renovated since the 1980 Olympics. The carpeting needs to be replaced, the wallpaper is peeling from the walls in places and the furnishings are stained. They are working on it currently but I did not see any changes when we were there.
The rooms are large, a sitting room and a separate bedroom area. However, the furnishings in the sitting room were old and stained. In addition, the only TV was in front of the bed and was not viewable from the sitting area.
The blanket on the bed was ripped in a number of places. While I would accept something like this as normal in a $35/night Days Inn I was not happy about it in a $100+/night upscale hotel.
Minor gripe: while the TV must have had 100 cable stations the TV did not show you what station number you were on or allow you to just type in the number of a station on the remote so you could not directly go to a station or find programs.
It appears that there are many good hotels in the area which are better and cheaper then the Northwoods Inn.
