Historical Traveller Reviews of Friar Tuck Resort Convention Center & Spa Hotel

Everything we read about this place is true. Light fixtures were hanging; hole behind every doorknob, falling (yes, actively falling) ceiling tiles and noisy corridors. But, the sheets were clean, the food was very tasty (and plenty of it) and the wait staff was friendly and efficient. We were there for a family reunion and thank God for good weather. The pools, play area and paddle boats kept us all occupied until dinner, which was delish. Stay away unless you are there with the right group!

Improvements at Friar Tuck

from A TripAdvisor Member
I went to Friar Tuck (August 1-8, 2004) for the third consecutive year with my family (group of 60) and was pleasantly surprised at the improvements that have been made. The surface of the tennis and basketball courts have been re-done, new playground equipment for the children, new paint around the pools and in the hallways, mats around the indoor pool. It is great to see management addressing some of the concerns made by guests over the years. As always the food was excellent (having all meals served in the smaller restaurant off the lobby was beter than the meals in the huge dining room upstairs). Having all meals waitered (rather than buffet style) was another plus. The grounds are kept beautiful and the views of the mountains are glorious. The Friar Tuck staff, especially the housekeepers (rooms were cleaned before we returned from breakfast), were professional and always helpful.
If you are used to vacations at The Plaza or the Four Seasons, then Friar Tuck is not for you. It is whatever you make it. The opportunities to have a great time are all here.
While there are still improvements to be made, new ceiling tiles, bathrooms could use some modernizing, and please fix the leaks!, everyone in my family loves Friar Tuck. We will return again next year and hopefully for many years to come.

Totally Unacceptable

We stayed at the FT spa and resort for two day 7/10 and 7/11 of 2004. The place was unbelievably dirty and unsafe. The fire marshals should shut the place down before a tragedy occurs. On both nights the fire alarms went off in the middle of the night. When I ask why at the front desk no one knew they had gone off. All the other bad reviews on this site are right on the money. It is a real shame that they can get away with deceiving travelers with their website and other advertising.

Bad beyond description

from Turndog
This is perhaps the worst hotel we have ever experienced with misleading advertising and over-inflated rates. The service was indifferent, the rooms were filthy and the place was generally creepy. Our room was so awful that we demanded a change (we were paying over $500 per night for a "suite"). We were relocated to one of the condos on the property. This was nearly as bad and scary since the window locks were broken. This place should be torn down. Please avoid at all costs. There do not appear to be many other options in the immediate vicinity which gives this awful place a lock on the market.

Very shabby, not at all chic

We have a long list of complaints, but have to say, when we reported them to the management they were understanding and refunded some of our money and let us out of our remaining booking.
The decor is pure 70's, which would be OK, weird, but kinda funny, if only the place were not falling apart. They need to get the bellhop off the front door and into the repair department.
Our room was a suite with a living room and separate bedroom. It was spacious. But it smelled like rotting cheese. I hoped it was temporary but the cleaning woman said it normally smells like cheese. Not a good thing. But we got some plug-ins and hoped for the best.
The bathroom was very large, whirlpool tub and separate shower. But the ceiling is falling in and the tile work is miserable.
The sheets and blankets were ready for goodwill. There were cobwebs in every window. And armchair had a broken arm. The painting above the couch had half the paint chipped off. A couch cushion looked like it had been attacked by a sharp instrument. Cigarette burns in the wall behind the couch.
But maybe they are trying to fix it up. I gather this from the various tools scattered outside the room, including a razor blade on the outside window sill. The tool shed near our room did not have a door, and all the tools and cleaning chemicals were available to anyone.
All in all, this place was bad, I would Not reccomend it at all!

I just got back from staying at the Friar Tuck "Resort and Spa" and I must say it was horrible. I was absolutely appalled by everything I saw. As soon as you walk into the lobby you are hit with a smell of mildew and mold, which i'm sure is due to the state of decay that the place is in. The pictues on their website are very misleading. The service was horrible, evrey employee that i encountered had an attitude (and working at a place like that I can see why). The rooms were disgusting, and everything was broken. There was no soap, loction, or blow dryer and when i asked for these things from the front desk i was put on hold several times for 20 minutes, and never got them. The outdoor patio was nice, Im assuming because it was in fact outside, in the fresh air. The pools were ok, but the paint was chipped off at the bottom, and there was dirt in them. The indoor pool was really bad, and the tiles surrounding the indoor pool were so slippery, i saw at least 3 little kids fall and smack their heads. I was also told there were 2 drownings in the indoor pool this past year!! I was absolutely disgusted by this place, and would tell anyone thinking of staying here to run the other way!! As for the good comments i read on here, i doubt anyone (besides management) could ever have anything good to say about the place.

Shabby describes the whole place. Mildew & Roach in the shower. We were given a room and then the hotel put a tour bus load of people on our floor. The noise, all night, was awful. Needless to say we did not stay the second night. What a disappointment. The brochure pictures were taken in the 70's.
Management Response from A TripAdvisor Member
Family owned and operated for over 30 years, the Friar Tuck Resort and Spa is the largest and one of the most reputable hotels in the greater capital district of New York State.

Although not the "newest" facility in the region; we pride ourselves on providing a consistent "resort experience."

It must be realized that the success of a conference or leisure outing is not created by "glass, concrete, bricks and stone." Instead, it is an ephemeral phenomenon carefully nurtured by a caring and hospitable staff; the professional expertise owner/management with over 30 years of "hands-on" background in the operation of a family resort; and a renowned reputation for providing the finest service and cuisine available at any comparable property!

Unfortunately, a few "disgruntled" individuals have elected to post some rather "unflattering comments" about the Friar Tuck Resort on various internet sites. However, the overwhelming majority of our leisure guests and convention clients return to us year after year! This "silent majority" has earned us the undisputed reputation as the foremost resort and convention center in the Hudson Valley/Catskill region!

ve ever stayed at

I was just there the weekend of Feb 27, 28, and 29th with a bus group.
The rooms were nasty, the room I had the door did not look safe, there are no peep holes the window doors that lead to the balcony's were not secure! Safety hazard. And the room I had with my husband had the nerve to have two twin beds, I have not slept on a twin bed since I left home! When we tried calling the front desk we were told there could not be any changes, and if ther was we had to do it among our group we came with.Let's talk about the food! Horrible, just like the comedian stated that was there Saturday you eat at 7pm and you make a deposit at 7:15 pm, that is putting it nicely!Drinks, another topic, out trip included free drinks for the weekend. Well if you want to experience a bad headache go for it, if not bring money with you and pay for what you want. This trip has made me think real long and hard about wanting to go to another weekend ski resort for a long time.Horrible! Horrible!
Horrible! I would not go back there if it was for FREE.

Terrible, Terrible, Terrible!!!

from c143n_123
We went there for Valentines day weekend and boy..we were in for a big shock. PLEASE don't go by their website. It's very deceiving. When we got there our room smelled so bad or cigarette smell and mold. It needed major remodeling. I got a nice shock turning on the bathroom light. Plus, they didn't leave us with any shampoo or bottles of lotion only like 4 mini bars of soap. The room was horrible. The resort itself is very dark and dingy. The whole place needed major remodeling. The food was disgusting. It tasted like it was frozen and reheated. Nothing tasted right at all. The service was ok. We booked the room for one night and a couple massage treatment. After dinner when we got there at 7:00 p.m., we decided to cancel and just drive back home. That's how disgusted we were with the whole place. At 8:30 p.m. we drove 2 hours back home. It defintely wasn't worth staying there. We didn't want to take a chance at the spa either. We spoke with another couple from Nyc at dinner time and they asked us if we had problems with the food. They decided to leave too. Atleast when we told them how we felt about the food and our room they just charged us $25 for dinner and that's all.
We got our deposit back and a full refund. Thank god for that!!! What a horrible place. I can't believe it's a convention center too.

Bar Food Saved My Stomach

from A TripAdvisor Member
The only reason I am not giving the place 1 star is because of the wonderful bartender who slaved to bring me drinks and edible food from the bar service. I went in May of 2003 with a convention and the food we were served in the dining hall was dreadful. The desserts were the only reliable things and that's because Sara Lee probably did them (they had that look and taste). Everything else could be relied upon to be swimming in grease and some of it barely cooked. We were given a room with a bathroom door that often trapped you in the bathroom and required you to go through elaborate contortions to drag it open, as well as the fact that the water heating system doesn't even appear adequate for the hotel - and we were in the main building - the shower veered from scalding to lukewarm and back again. Still and all, we were relatively lucky - the tales our friends told of the rooms they'd been stuck in were far worse. Best of all, we came on a bus (being a convention and all) and when we arrived Friday afternoon, the ATM was out of money and was never fixed, despite our frequent complaints, and one of our party had to hitch a ride with some acquaintances who lived relatively near and had driven in order to get his hands on any money. The place is a warrenlike maze and the maps we were given to navigate the buildings, did not apply - it reminded more than a few of us of the Overlook Hotel! The service was adequate but, with the exception of the aforementioned bartender, not stellar, and the woman at the front desk had the ******** time divvying up the bill for the room between the three of us staying there (almost as if no one had ever asked them that question before). I'm sure there are many better resorts to stay at in the Catskills - go and do so.

Olana! If you get a chance to visit, check out the historical site Olana. Prior home of the Hudson River School artist Frederic Church, it's an amazing house and truly fantastic views of the Hudson Valley.

Zume Flume Tip If you are not going to be using the water slides get the lower rate for non participants.
