| You don't even get what you pay for these days... |
| We spent three days of our week long road trip at Alexandria Bay (my kids are 10 & 15). I was looking for an affordable place to stay and my kids were looking for a pool. I found the Boardwalk Motel on the internet, but there were no reviews to go by so all I had was the information they provided on their web site. When we pulled into the parking lot we were not disappointed. There indeed was a nice pool surrounded by a large deck with a very nice view of Boldt Castle in the background. The room, however, was a different picture. Immediately when we opened the front door and stepped inside, we knew there was something very wrong with the room. I almost lost my balance when I walked across the room. We had to prop something behind the door to keep it from slamming into the wall everytime we opened it. The whole building apparently had shifted 6-8 inches(into the bay I'm assuming). The bathroom was a handyman's nightmare. And apparently talented handymen are hard to find. Instead of repairing the cracks and damage properly, they simply smeared drywall mud over the defects and figured that was good enough. I turned the shower on just to make sure it worked and there was no cold water. All I got was scalding hot water from both faucets. Then I couldn't get them to turn off. The knobs were stripped or something and it took my son 10 minutes to shut it off. We went ahead and unpacked our things figuring we would spend very little time in the room anyway. But one night was all we could take. I went to the motel office and asked for another room and they were kind enough to give us the room next door. Pretty much the same room only this one had a working shower AND a small refrigerator in the room so we took it. We tried to laugh it off...we joked about the obvious slant to the room and the fact that we could see the GROUND between the wall and the floor while sitting on the toilet! We thought that was the best. And the fact that they knew there were FOUR of us in the room, but only TWO towels provided each day. I guess we were expected to share. We had to walk to the office (across the parking lot) in order to get more. The beds. Oh boy. We might as well have slept on the floor...or for that matter been camping out on the ground. I realize you 'get what you pay for' these days but I think $100/night is fair exchange for a comfortable bed, a working shower, and clean towels. I'm not sure what "bed bugs" really are, but I'm guessing those mattresses were infested with them because we had little red bug bites all over our ankles and feet and they weren't from mosquitos. Needless to say, we couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. Luckily, we are use to 'roughing it' so we didn't let this ruin our vacation. But I feel it is only fair to warn other vacationers that they might want to choose another motel. Or at least ask to SEE your room before you pay. I don't imagine this motel will be standing much longer considering it is falling over. Hopefully there are no occupants inside when it finally bites the dust! |
