Historical Traveller Reviews of Crowne Plaza Albany Hotel
t be fooled

Don't be fooled; the hotel is positioned in the heart of downtown and is in walking distance to all of the great area attractions, like the NY State Museum, the Art & History Museum, the State Capital, etc. and has a decent bed, but it is not an "accommodating" hotel. For instance, we needed a small fridge in our room for medication. Had it been requested for anything other than a medical reason, the charge would be $20 / night. When the hotel management brought the fridge in and set it up, they were laughing as soon as they shut our door--the joke was on us since they turned the cooling dial to "max." Luckily, my husband noticed this and turned it down to "3" to keep things from freezing (pretty sadistic if you ask us.) Also, the hotel operates on "winter" and "summer" temps meaning if you are there like we were in May and it is hot in your room, the plaque by the thermostat suggests that you open the window. How can you sleep in DOWNTOWN with the window open? You can't. In addition, we filled out our in-room breakfast request and hung it on the door at approximately 8 pm the night before. Our breakfast never came. We opened the door and it was still hanging there, but someone did find the time to slip our bill under the door. The indoor pool was closed and the business center was closed also (for the entire six days we were there.) When it came time to leave, the hotel shuttle driver informed us that we had missed the 4 pm shuttle (we didn't, it was parked outside) and made us wait until the flight crew that was staying there came down for the next shuttle at 4:30 pm. We did manage to make it to the airport by 5:05 pm for our 6:30 flight. The hotel management sucked. The waitstaff in the restaurant, especially a lady named Karen who took care of us when our in room breakfast request was ignored, and the housekeeping staff were all very friendly and helpful. They have the monopoly on location, but the rest is just ok.
Impressed by the Crowne Plaza
from SFO Grrl
On a recent trip to Albany, I chose the Crowne Plaza for its downtown location and Easter-weekend low rate. Although I don't typically find myself "impressed" by chain hotels, this stay merits a review. 1- The room had unusual decorating touches that made it feel elegant 2 - The windows opened! 3 - The spa-like amenities were actually useful and well chosen 4 - The website's hoopla about creating a good sleep environment wasn't overstated; I appreciated the pillows in different firmnesses, the cushiony mattress cover, and the complimentary earplugs and sleepmask. Negatives: The TV didn't work, but this resulted in a discount (we did not ask for it to be fixed); the hotel parking garage is an expensive proposition, but we found ample street parking, free on the weekends, although during a busier time I can imagine street parking would be difficult. Overall, a really pleasant stay, and the location -- literally down the hill from the State House -- can't be surpassed.
Off to a rough start, but very impressed with the room
I stayed here in January 2006 The directions off of the website were terrible, i drove around for 20 minutes before finding the hotel. Already annoyed, I checked in and was given a room on the 9th floor. I dragged my luggage up to the room, put the key in the lock and opened the door on some middle-aged man lying in bed, watching TV. Apparently they had double booked the room. Mortified, i went back to the lobby and was given another room. The room was very nice---large, clean, well-kept. The sleep aids are a nice touch. The free wireless internet is also great. The staff (with the exception of the room incident) were very nice and friendly. Overall, a nice, clean hotel if you have to stay in Albany for business.
Awesome location. Great hotel.

The Albany Crowne Plaza is in a fantastic location. Just blocks from everything in downtown Albany. The room was excellent. Nice touches such as the sleep CD, lavender spray and ear plugs. It was very cold (3 degrees F at arrival) and snowy (8 inches fell) while there, but the hotel lobby was warm as was our room. We had a great view of the city. Parking garage was safe, accessible and close to hotel. We ordered room service and were not even charged the 18% fee or $2.00 delivery charge. All in all, we had a great experience and would definitely stay again. Highly recommended.

we had a one night stay in this hotel and it was very nice, friendly staff, comfortable large room with very nice beds, room was a little noisy as we were overlooking a multi storey carpark, but we both still slept very well. we had a lovely breakfast the best on a 10 night holiday.
Not a Great Stay
The restaurant was nice. This is an older hotel, but that was not a big deal. The problem was the non-smoking room smelled like an ashtray. Was switched to another room on another floor which had a covered up smoke smell as also.
Had the Best Nights Sleep Ever Here - Wicked
This has got to be one of the best hotels I've stayed in!
Didn't venture in Albany itself as it was only a night stop but the hotel was wonderful.
The bed was amazing and the most comfy one I've ever slept in.
You even got a red organza drawstring bag and an eye mask, lavender spray and ear plugs. These along with some fab great name toiletries and a special sleep cd won it for me completely.
Didn't hear any traffic outside and the room was very clean and fresh.
The only slight down side was the bar downstairs - they were having staff problems however the guys were very friendly and kept saying sorry for the delay and gave us free drinks.
Great service and felt very safe.
Would definitely use this hotel again.
Front desk staff could use some training.
Hotel itself was great. Fabulous location I thought. And my room had a gorgeous view of two beautiful churches and the state capitol. Food was FANTASTIC! Nice looking room was super clean and the housekeeping lady was so nice. Now here is the downside that turned this from a 5-star experience to only three stars...the front desk staff. UGH. Where do I start? I checked in at midnight on Saturday. I had pre-paid this reservation and they were trying to charge me again. Had to refer to the manager to straighten it out. Took 35 minutes total. There were three other parties in line to check in behind me and the thing I did not understand were that THREE other front desk staffers were just leaning on the back wall and doing nothing. Just standing. A guest came by and asked one of the clerks if she could get a toothbrush. He said he couldn't help her and said the lady helping me would have to get it for her. And then he went back to just standing there and the lady had to go to the back of the line to wait for a toothbrush!! GOOD GRIEF!! The next day, I asked the front desk staff if there were any other restaurants around besides the one in the hotel. They were all clueless. So I went for a walk and found 7 on the same block! Anyway... I won't even go into check out two days later. But it was just as bad as check in. Different clerk helping me, but the same THREE staffers, standing around and still holding up that wall. Even with the line-up of people trying to check out. Unbelievable.
An overrated nightmare

1- when we checked in they were having computer problems. had booked 2 rooms. got the first one at 3:00pm (and that took about 20 minutes despite the fact i was the only person there and they must have had 7 people behind the counter) then the computer went down. got the
second one about 5 hours later (yes 5 hours) due to ....you guessed it computer prolems.
2-phones in one room could not receive incoming calls (not even from anoter room). we were there 2 nights and never got it fixed.
3-air conditioner never worked and never got fixed.
4-took about 20 minutes to get my car keyes.
5-staff is surely, misinformed and not at all friendly.
6-on the second night had to call security at 9:00 pm and midnight due
to yelling and doors banging (rooms are not soundproof at all). noise
stopped around 4:00 am.
7-asked for directions to a park that was 4 blocks away. nobody at front desk or valet knew where it was. they had to call the pastry chef for directions.
i really thought i was on mtv's punked or candid camera but sad to
say that was not the case.
would not stay there again.
Best Hotel in Albany!
Stayed at Albany Crown Plaza last weekend – May 20 – 21. I was actually very impressed with some of the little upgrades that they had. This was our 3rd time staying here and by far the best place to stay in Albany. Albany is not like a tourist town, so there are not many options. This is a nice hotel. It is not a 5 star hotel, but it is nice. The Crown Plaza is in the best location. Near all the state agencies, theaters, bars, restaurants, churches and not far from the malls. The hotel has a great restaurant, bar / restaurant combo, gift shop and a small store. Room service is very reasonable. Crown Plaza has new sleep amenities, like lavender spray, earplugs and a CD to help you sleep. They provided complementary spring water, chocolates and pretzels. The room comes equipped with a microwave, a refrigerator and coffee maker. Our room was a basic king, very clean and had a spectacular view of the city. The bed was very comfortable too. The gym and pool are great!! We have stayed at much more expensive hotels with no gym at all or a fee to use their facilities. No fee here. We have paid $79 to $92 for all of our stays. The accommodations, free gym and all their amenities cannot be beat for this price. Of course you can find better accommodations at the Four Seasons, but certainly not for under $100!
Top Local Tips for Albany
Visit Lark Street for great restaurants
Lark Street area, only a few blocks from the hotel, offers a wide variiety of non-chain local dining experiences
Eat at Jack's down State Street
Down the street from the reviewed hotel is an Albany establishment: Jack's. Great, low-key ambience, excellent service and food. Can be very busy at lunch hour and during legislative session. Good wine selection. It's interesting who you might see there.
Alive at 5
If you're here in the summer during the week - check out the Alive at 5 concert series at a riverside park 2 blocks away. Free concerts with recognizable talent. Tonight was Dennis DeYoung doing Styx hits.
