Top Local Tips for Albany
Good eats!. Madison End Diner (on Madison Ave.) has great food. It's a well known local spot for delicious weekend breakfasts. During parent's weekends at SUNY Albany, it get particularly busy. The eggs florentine were very good (made with a smooth and delicous hollandaise sauce). The coffee was robust and plentiful.
Burritos for Lunch Bombers Burritos (on Lark St.) is a bit of a goth dive meets college bar type scene, but the food is very good. In addition to the typical steak, chicken, pork and bean options available at all Americanized Mexican restaurants, they also offer vegetarian chicken, tofu, sauteed veggies and a choice of salsa or vegan BBQ sauce (so yummy). I usually get the vegetarian chicken burrito with black beans, cheese, salsa, guac, sour cream, rice, lettuce, tomatoes and salsa verde; or the baked tofu with BBQ sauce, rice, cheese, tomatoes and lettuce. The beverages come in one size (large) and if you eat in, they are refillable from the fountain dispenser.
Delicious Indian Buffett (and it's halal too!) (Curry house on madison ave.) Curry House has the most delicious Indian & Pakistani food in all of Albany. It beats the pants off Shalimars, Gandi's and anyplace else I've tried. They have a great lunch buffettMonday-Saturday for only $6 or $7. It comes with a few meat and vegetarian dishes, nann, rice, condiments, raita, dessert. Monday-Friday they also offer a dinner buffett for about $8.00. Beverages are extra, unless you have water from the pitchers provided. I often call in my order and pick it up to eat at home. My favorites include: vegetable samosa, paratha, chicken tikka, chicken tikka masala, chicken curry, aloo palak (potatoes and spinach cooked in spices and sauce), chana palak (chick peas & spinach with sauce), palak paneer (spinach and homemade country cheese with sauce), vegetable korma, rasmali (dessert) and the chai is excellent!
