Nice rooms - but staff was rude and unattentive...good luck getting a smile out of anyone here.

Watch this place. Added 50. charge to my bill for smoking in non-smoking room. Didn't happen have not received credit, now having to go thru credit card issuer to try and get credit. Other than that all was good.

The Sage Inn is conveniently located to downtown and to a relative of mine who I visit. The staff at the front desk are always helpful and things run efficiently.

Very good value

We stayed four nights at the Sage Inn over New Year's Eve. We had realistic expectations of a budget hotel near the Plaza. I know Santa Fe very well since I have a family member in the area and have been visiting for over twenty years, though this was my first time staying in a motel in Santa Fe. We were very pleasantly surprised. The room was clean and quiet (if dark, which isn't bad when you're trying to sleep in), the staff were friendly and helpful, the buffet, if not gourmet, was decent enough so that we weren't wasting money on a meal we aren't that interested in, and the free computer access in the comfortable, clean lobby meant we didn't have to lug laptops to SF.

The rooms are small, but when we weren't in them very much, and the shower was great. I've stayed in a number of luxury hotels with bad water pressure or annoying/confusing showers, so I know the difference.

Every request we had--an extra pillow, for example--was met promptly and with graciousness. Every question we had about the area was answered carefully and intelligently.

We would suggest asking for a room on the second floor, unless toting suitcases up and down stairs is a bother, and ask to stay near the back.

We never got up our nerve to go in the heated pool, since it was so cold outside, but it was a nice little pool and the water was definitely warm.

The Sage Inn is within walking distance of Tomasita's (great food, very reasonable prices) as well as Whole Foods. With a car, you can go to Trader Joe's (we saw a family picnicking from TJ's one night--a nice option for when you're tired of dining out). If you want to close out the night with a fancy nightcap, there's a beautiful hotel nearby.

All told, we would (and probably will) stay there again.

You get what you pay for!!

$49/night- that's what they advertize. That's what you get. No misadvertizing here. It's cheap. It's a got a facelift- but its' a budget hotel- no frills. Next door is the McDonalds home of the "homeless". Right off of busy street. But then what do you expect for $49.00?? Makes me wonder what special upgrades you get in August when the rates go up to over $100/night!!

Disappointing Experience

After reading the last two reviews here, we decided to give the Sage a try since it price wise and distance wise to the "Plaza" seemed the best choice. We booked a superior room with two double beds via the motel's web site for two nights after Christmas. This room was supposed to have a club chair with ottoman, an extra comfort I was looking forward to. After arriving at the motel, unfortunately disappointments started as soon as we opened the door to our room. First we found they had put us in a standard room (no club chair, ottoman, or southwest decor). Then after informing the front desk clerk about the mistake, she rather reluctantly gave us another room. When opening it's doors, though now we had the correct furnishing style, there was no club chair. Since this feature was the reason why I had booked the superior room, I went back to the front desk. There I was told that the double bed rooms do not have a club chair (as of 1/8/06 their web site however still advertises it ), only rooms with a queen bed have them. Since by then the room we had been given was the only one available, appeared clean, and it was getting dark, we stayed. As soon as we went into bed we regretted it. The beds turned out to be quite uncomfortable, and the bed sheets were very itchy (mattresses appeared not "new"). Our children were also disappointed that the TV had only ten channels (premium cable??????). The next morning we checked out, and stayed the following night in a different hotel. The only real pro's for this motel are the 24 hour free use of two computers in the lobby, and the 12 pm check out if you stay in a superior room.

I stayed at the Sante Fe Sage Inn for three days last weekend and was very much satisfied with the quality and for such a low price. This was better than a basic room you find at most motels exceptionally clean and quiet with many decorative pluses you don't find at such a price. This was the best value I have had and I have travelled often. I would definately stay here again and it is close to the old historic downtown Sante Fe. When I seen a survey at check out I gladly filled it out and in the section to list what I would recommend for improvement I put "can't think of anything".

Great Find

My wife and I wanted to get away for the weekend without breaking the bank. We found the Sage Inn on-line. It turned out to be a great find. The staff was friendly, the room was stocked with the usual items and clean. Breakfast was included in our rate. We were continually asked how we were doing, and was there anything we needed. The lobby and breakfast areas were comfortable. We'll stay again the next time we visit Santa Fe.

Easy on location, hard on the back

While the Santa Fe Sage Inn has done a lot to renovate in the last year (it used to be the Santa Fe Budget Inn), you still get what you pay for. The room we had was tiny, although somewhat renovated. Loud and thin walls; when the neighbor took a shower at 2:00 am it sounded like Niagara Falls in our room. The bed was not new and killed our backs for 2 nights, springs poking through in spots. Awful pillows too. And while we had been guaranteed a deluxe queen, the bed was only full size. Wish I had brought my tape measure with me when the desk clerk insisted we were in a queen bed room. The owners do try to put on a decent breakfast buffet with baked goods, hard-boiled eggs, and watery coffee. For a better bet try the Whole Foods market next door. The best thing about this motel is its location -- a 15 minute walk from the Santa Fe plaza and great restaurants. Also it has adequate parking. And the rates are good for expensive resorty Santa Fe, even if it is short on frills and comfort.

This used to be some sort of budget chain, but has been upgraded a bit. You can't get any closer to the plaza for near this price -- it's walkable to anything downtown. Their own "Web Special" prices can't be beat. I grew up in SF and love having a clean, friendly place to stay without breaking the bank.

Great for the Budget Traveller

For an extremely budget place of accommodation, this place was great! Sure, it doesn't have fancy extras but has all the basics you need. The pool was clean and the great feature (besides the price) is that it is within walking distance of the heart of Santa Fe. It had complimentary internet access and the staff were more than helpful and friendly. I found the breakfast to be great, a choice of bagels, toast, muffins, variety of cereals, variety of pastries, fruit, eggs, juice, coffee and tea etc. I don't know how any one could find this disappointing! Not the place to stay if you want to have a relaxing holiday louning around, but if you need somewhere to stay that doesn't eat the budget, but is clean, friendly and provides a good breakfast, then this is the place! I also recommend the trolley tour that leaves from the foyer.

We were a little nervous about staying here after reading some of the reviews, but had a good experience. The rooms are small, but clean. The hotel itself is very convenient to everything in Santa Fe. The staff was very helpful. The continental breakfast was a disappointment, but I wasn't staying there for the food! In all, this is a great value; nothing fancy, but I wasn't in Santa Fe for the hotel.

Top Local Tips for Santa Fe

Driving Around. Santa Fe can be very confusing to drive around if you are a first time visitor. Roads meader through the older part of town, and sometimes change names when you don't expect it, and other times all but circle the downtown, making it difficult to know exactly where you are in relationship to anything else. However, once you get to used to it you realize that Santa Fe is really a pretty small city (less than 80,000 people) and things aren't as far apart as the tourist maps make it seem. The best advice is to find a municipal parking lot and walk where you want to go.

Dine in style away from tourists Have a great evening at Dinner for Two on Guadalupe St. This is near the Plaza but mostly frequented by locals. Their varied menu now includes a "fusion tasting menu" consisting of small plates. On Sunday they feature 3 course dinner for only $18. Homemade bread, diverse menu. Excellent service and reasonable prices

Sage Inn They (the hotel staff) will try to tell you they are so convenient to walk to the historic Plaza area...not!
