Top Local Tips for Santa Fe

Take a drive If you have a car and a morning to spare, take a drive west to Los Alamos to drive the Jemez Scenic Byway. Drive northwest towards Los Alamos and take Route 4 when you get to it. Take that all the way around until you get to Route 599, which will eventually take you back to I-25 and from there you can get back to Santa Fe or Albuquerque. The trip begins at White Rock, winds through high plains towards Bandelier National Monument. Then, you climb through the Jemez Mountains in alpine forests, pass the Valle Caldera (make sure to stop for the view), enter red rock canyon area and then finally pass through the pueblos of various tribes. Even stopping for views and hikes, it's not more than three hours, unless you do some serious hiking. The scenery is gorgeous and it gets you out of a congested touristy area for a few hours. Just make sure to gas up in White Rock, as there are not many facilities along the way. Take a picnic and enjoy the ride.

Frank's Road House is excellent. Excellent food at reasonable prices. Parking lots seem to be always full. Lots of charm. Again, excellent food. 10 minutes from downtown but worth it.

Museum Hill is worth a trip In the city center at the bus "depot" (actually a street, Sheridan, where all public buses end trips) is the M bus which runs up to Museum Hill which has four first-class museums. I went to the Wheelwright Indian Museum and the Indian Museum of Art and Culture. Don't miss a chance to come up here; besides the cultural aspects, the view from the hill is fantastic.
