Historical Traveller Reviews of El Rey Inn Hotel

Great value, clean rooms

from SaiSai
I thought the grounds were lovely and while the location was a *bit* out of the center of town, this place is a fantastic option. My room was very clean and the bathroom was huge, with an excellent shower and lots of sun. There are also unique touches here and there, that keeps it from feeling like you're staying in a generic chain motel.

It was nice, but not the Ritz

from VAGurl
This place was nice, but it's not the Ritz. We had a room with a balcony and paid $125/night. I expected a little more for the price we paid. The location it's in is close to town (about 5 minutes via car) but not very scenic otherwise. It's on a small highway with all kinds of strip malls near-by. Next time we stay in Santa Fe, I think I'll choose a place within walking distance of the square.

What a nightmare

from A TripAdvisor Member
I saw the reviews here and I like to use it a lot and most of the times the reviews direct us to the right place, but I must say don't get too happy about the reviews for this inn. I never had worse experince anywhere else. They were very polite nd helpful when making the reservation, but when I got there things changed completely. The staff was average to sometimes rude and did not seem to be willing to give suggestions on what to do nor help us with the fact that the room did not get cleaned properly for our arrival (hairs in the drain, toilet not flushed!, and a poor appearance of clean floor). I guess that made them not too pleased w/ me and from that point on any request at all would be treated as an incovenience. It was clear that if you dont keep your mouth shut regarding things they failed to provide, the service will get even worse because they wont allow people to not be satisfied without having to pay for it.

Unforgettable anniversary!!

from RobfromTx
We found that our 20th anniversary would fall during a driving trip we had planned. Naturally, we wanted it to be special. We were advised to consider the El Rey Inn. What a deal!! We called and made reservations for a suite. We got a gorgeous spacious suite. When we checked in the staff was so nice and suggested we check their table of HUGE notebooks of local resturants for our special dinner. On arriving at our suite, we had a complementary bottle of wine iced with 2 glasses. The pool was heated and lovely. At the complementary breakfast, your muffins are heated and served with a delightful buffet. This place is just the BEST and we have a wonderful memory of the EL REY!!

Something Different

It is hard to find true hospitality and that is why I enjoyed the El Rey. If you are looking for a place with real history, beautiful gardens, and a staff that understands the concept of service, than this is the hotel!!! The El Rey is a reason to visit Santa Fe all on its own.

Call El Rey First

from Bandmom
Recently stayed 3 nights at the El Rey Inn. I have stayed at several places in Santa Fe and this beats them all. For a very reasonable price, the rooms are very nicely appointed and very clean. Our room looked as if it had been recently redecorated. The property is beautiful and the continental breakfast is more than adequate. The staff were friendly and helpful. Now, we will call El Rey first when we are planning a trip to Santa Fe.

What a surprise!

As you approach Santa Fe via the Turquoise Trail from Albuqurque you hit their version of "the miracle mile" as Route 14 becomes Cerillos Road. Nothing quaint or historical about countless fast food places, Office Max, shopping malls and car dealerships. Then we came upon the The El Rey Inn. A beautiful facility that was clearly here long before its commercial neighbors. Based on a tripadvisor review we reserved a room over the Courtyard and it was lovely. Fireplace, balcony, beautiful appointments and a swimming pool I used every day. Our room was as far away from the main drag as you could get and as a result very quiet. When you add into the mix how wonderful the staff is, it makes a stay here a real winner. By the way from this location you are on to the main road that takes you into downtown Santa Fe (5 minutes away) and close to the other major highways that take you to attractions out of the area like Bandolier Park (Amazing). Finally a word to the wise. Unless you like over paying for your meal avoid the "Bull Ring" in downtown Santa Fe. Everything is ala carte, over priced and I felt they believed they were doing me a favor by allowing my wife and I to eat here. Who needs to travel 2000 miles to feel badly when they eat dinner? By contrast, try one of "Roques'" tamales. He sells them out of his cart on the Plaza and they're terrifec. He's worth the time just to talk too as he is as full of local color as anyone you'll meet.Street carts are not our normal "speed" but Roque is a real treat as is his food. All in all,a vist to Santa Fe is a must but don't get stuck doing shops all the time. Stay at The El Rey Inn and plan to explore the entire region.

Defined hospitality

The El Rey Inn is a classic motel with a classic understanding of hospitality. There is something unique about old world charm this hotel delivers with style and grace. A must visit!

not your basic motel-this is good!

from yatmeh
my wife and i stayed here 4 nites over the xmas holidays. weather was tough but room rates in the different city were VERY high. we had a king suite in the spanish courtyard for a great rate. it is a motel on the cerrillos road strip where there seemed to be about 30. if you're looking for a predictable cookie cutter fairfield, ramada, holiday inn etc., don't go here. great place with a wide variety of interesting rooms, nooks and crannies abound on the property, landscaping is VERY important here. our room was huge and comfortable. the staff is great!
their breakfasts are interesting-loved the chocolate tortilla. this place has a real personality and it's good. we'd stay again in a heartbeat.

Terrific Inn, Great staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
Recently stayed 3 nights at the El Rey Inn. The staff were warm, welcoming and went out of their way to ensure we had a wonderful time there. We stayed in the standard room for the first two nights, then upgraded to a deluxe room on the Spanish Courtyard. It was well worth the extra cost. Will definitely stay here again next time we are in Santa Fe. If you are looking for reasonably priced accommodation in a convenient location, we highly recommend the El Rey Inn. Special thanks to Kathy and the front desk staff for their great customer service!

Top Local Tips for Santa Fe

Georgia O'Keeffe Museum The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum was very educational. Be sure to partake in the docent tours scheduled at 10:30 and 2:00 each day.

Flea Market Just north of Santa Fe beside Highway 84 there is a dirt field with a bunch of semi-permanent shelters (tents, etc.) set up as a "flea market" for artisans, artists, craftsmen, peddlers, etc. It is open seasonally (spring to late fall). Days and hours are posted at the entrance, but ask locally. For anyone who likes to shop at arts and crafts fairs, it can be a lt of fun and you may find a pearl for a pittance.

Great Santa Fe Tour guide Mom and I got a tour guide online, Don Dietz. He is wonderful and was very good and I thinkwould be great for any ages too. We did the Taos Adventure with him. His email is don@santafepathways.com
