Historical Traveller Reviews of Holiday Inn NEWARK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Hotel

Not bad, but the food could be improved

from JoeTrainer
I stayed here after being shifted from their sister property across the highway. You have to pay $15 to park, and don't get room service, the food was horrible.

Great--If Conveneince Has No Place in Your Plans

from steve39
If you are looking for convenient location at Newark Airport--skip this one. If you are simply driving by and need a place to stop, this works.

Two major problems that rule it out for plane travelers.
--Arriving by plane (or train) you will need to take the AirTrain to Stop P4. And there you may have to wait up to 40 minutes (I did in four separate experiences in Aug 2007) for the bus to come to take you to the property. This may be longer than a non-rush hour cab from New York. Most other airport or close proximity properties have their vehicles arriving every 15-20 minutes. The actual ride to the hotel is 10 minutes, but to save money the bus stops at two other hotels. IN short, it took me close to an hour each time I went from P4 to the Holiday Inn. While you can call and ask where the van is, the answer is always the same--five minutes away.

--Spending a day in the city. If you plan is to fly out in the evening and leave your bags at the hotel, guess again. They claim that TSA does not allow checkrooms (it allows them at every other airport hotel I have stayed at since 9/11). I went through a multi stage diagreement, which took more than 30 minutes. I was told 1) You must take your bags. 2) You can leave them in your room until 6 PM for $69.95. 3) You can try to leave them at the front desk in the morning (not secure), but we can't promise it. 4) You can leave them in your room.

SO if P4 is necessary to get to and from the property or you need a check room, forget this.

If you do not, the hotel is in good shape, the restaurant had good, but overpriced food and there is fine concession to buy simple food to take to your room.

The hotel is between a railroad yard and highway, but there was no significant noise.

Only if you have no other choice

from PBearSingapore
The hotel is only suitable if you are staying for a 1 night layover and that you have no other better choice. I had taken it as I needed to stay overnight and this was among the cheaper option.

The furnishings however are old and some things need better maintenance. The bathroom floor also feels sticky. There is also no breakfast included in the price.

I also took the hotel shuttle from the airport during prime hours and thought the frequency was alright. The shuttle however would be best served with some cleaning.

Overall, if you have a better choice, you would not wish to stay here.

OK if you can find it

from wizbud
Probably the most difficult hotel we have ever tried to find, even with internet directions!!.We took about 45mins from the airport for a half mile journey.Usual Holiday Inn rooms etc nothing special. Grim views over the railway tracks. Staff were friendly.

*NOTHING* around this hotel and HORRIBLE shuttle service

from bscrim
*NOTHING* around this hotel and HORRIBLE shuttle service.
The price may be right to be close to the city, but you're trapped there. The rooms are fine, butif you don't mind being nextdoor to a prison and there is nowhere you can walk to.
The shuttle from the airport took over an hour one time and a good 55 minutes an other time. Every time I called I got a new excuse.
When I complained at the desk about the shuttle, I got yet more excuses.

Beware of the shuttle

from darren022
The hotel seems perfectly fine but beware of the shuttle. We arrived close to midnight and waited over an hour in the cold for the shuttle to pick us up. For our early morning flight we again waited an hour for an extremely crowded shuttle serving multiple hotels. We nearly missed our flight and it really ruined our stay. Management informed me that the shuttle service was running normally so my advice is to plan on using a taxi to and from the airport if staying here.

Good Choice for Short Stay

from alaskancrzr
We booked the hotel for an overnight layover on our outbound and inbound flights. The shuttle to and from the airport was prompt, check in was quick and efficient. For $102, we got a nice, clean room, comfortable king size bed, dining on site, helpful and considerate staff, and good location. We dined both nights at Teddy's - the inhouse bar & grill - and found the food to be very good. If you're looking for a place to overnight close to the airport, I would definitely recommend the Holiday Inn.

Less expensive way to see NYC

from ransonju
My wife and I stayed here for three nights to visit NYC on a vacation to New England. We had never been to New York before and wanted to save a little money by staying out of town. The hotel was clean and the staff was very helpful. We took the shuttle to the airport and took the train into NYC. It was all pretty easy and the hotel staff gave us pointers on the first day. The wi-fi worked fine and housekeeping service was good. Other than that, we weren't at the hotel much so I can't comment on much else!

The only complaint we had was with the return shuttle service on our second night. We returned to the airport after taking the train back from Manhattan and the shuttle didn't show up for over an hour - it was supposed to arrive every 20-30 minutes (I has been a few months!). We ended up pleading with the driver of the Marriott shuttle and walking from there (next door). There were some very unhappy people who had just arrived from out of town and just wanted to get to the hotel.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel for anyone who wants to see New York, but not pay NYC hotel prices!

Fair deal

from DSXM
I booked this hotel becuase of the lower rates compared to other North Jersey and NYC hotels. We used it for the purpose of visiting friends in North Jersey and galavanting through Manhattan for a couple of days.
The check-in was efficient and problem free. We were given a free drink at the bar and a voucher for the sudries store. Our room was your standard king room with fully functioning amenities. Everything was clean and items were restocked if we used them. The wall unit heat/ac was easy to operate and kept the room comfortable.
The only downside was that the breakfast in the main restaurant was overpriced and my wife found the food inedible. One morning we grabbed a pastry at the coffee bar and one moring we ventured to the IHOP out on Route 22.
We drove to Newark Penn Station and parked for free in the Ironbound section to get to the city. As another reviewer mentioned, getting to the hotel can be tricky if you aren't quick to read the signs or happen to make a wrong turn.

Right price for commuting to NYC

from AnonVirginia
We chose this hotel for the free shuttle to the Newark airport, from whence we took NJ Transit train to NY Penn Station for sight-seeing. We arrived at the hotel by car, and had done the comparison between paying the higher prices to stay in a NYC hotel (including the exorbitant parking fees of $25-$30 per day plus in/out fees) or staying at this hotel ($15 per day parking in a secure lot) and taking the train. We estimated that we saved about $500. (2 adults and a 10-year old for a 6-night stay with 4 days of commuting, 2 of which were on the weekend when kids are free on NJ transit)

One of the days of our visit we drove to Liberty Park, NJ to take the ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. We had been told that the ferries leaving from the Jersey side would be less crowded than the ones from Battery Park. We had no way to compare, but walked right on the next ferry each time we were ready to leave.

On the good side, the hotel had very nice public spaces, and we had a decent, clean room, which did not suffer from airport noise. The hotel shuttle worked well for us, although we did not try to use it late at night or early in the morning. While we were waiting for or riding the shuttle, our daughter got a kick out of chatting with the many airline flight crews.

On the minus side, the beautifully tiled showers had ledge to hold shampoo bottles or soap - strange and very inconvenient. The water pressure in the shower was the lowest I'd ever experienced, more of a morning "trickle" than a shower. Also, there are NO nearby eating places. We solved this by eating in the city before we returned to the hotel, except for the night we did Ellis Island. That night the hotel directed us to a small town about 10 miles away, which was nothing to write home about. We chose a Ruby Tuesday as being the best of limited options.

I had read other reviews about how hard it was to find this property, but we had no trouble, using the directions from the hotel's website. Although, coming north out of the tool booth, you really had to be ready for an *immediate* right exit.

Although it would have been fun to stay in NYC, the extra commuting time was worth the $500 savings for us. Flying in (no parking fees) and a shorter stay reduces this benefit quickly. For instance, I estimate a 2-night stay (Sat-Sun with no parking) to save only about $100.
