Four Points Newark a No- Go!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My girlfriend ran the NYC Marathon and we stayed here. Right up front I'll say that the shuttle service to and from the Newark Airport was timely and very useful during our 3 night stay. That's it. That's the only positive thing I can say. We arrived Friday afternoon and the check-in was uneventful. Saturday morning we woke up and went to the onsite restaurant for breakfast. We chose the buffet. Not much of a choice (cereal, scrambled eggs, and french toast were the main choices) but the food was okay. However the wheat bread was stale enough to crumble as you ate it. My girlfriend tried to find a clean spoon among those in supply at the buffet table but was unsuccessful. $11 each for the buffet. Later that night, after returning from NYC and the night before the race, we asked if we could have a dinner menu delivered to the room so we could order room service (there was no menu already in the room). After waiting for 30 minutes we called back down and asked again for a menu to be sent up. After another 15 minutes of waiting we simply called room service and asked what pasta dishes were on the menu - one of which we both ordered. This time the food was pretty decent. My girlfriend called the front desk before going to bed and requested a 5:00 a.m. wake-up call. Fortunately I also set the alarm on my cell phone. Fortunate because the wake up call didn't come until 5:50 a.m. By that time she was 20 minutes into a taxi ride headed for the Meadowlands where busses were waiting to take marathon participants to the starting line in Staten Island. The morning of the race I stayed behind and tried the breakfast buffet again. The same menu and the same stale whole wheat bread. Later that afternoon after the race we returned to the hotel. My girlfriend only wished for a chance to relax after running 26 miles so we again asked the front desk for a room-service menu. I also explained that the previous night, despite two requests, a menu was never delivered. Apologies were offered and a menu promised. Within 10 minutes a menu was delivered to our room. We chose our entrees and called room service. No answer. We waited a few minutes and called again. No answer. We then called the front desk and said we were trying to order room service but there was no answer. We were promised a return call by room service. After 15 minutes and no call, we again called down to the front desk and said we were trying to order room service. Again they promised to have someone call us. 10 minutes later the front desk called and said the restaurant was closed for the night. The time now was around 7:00 p.m. I should note that the restaurant's hours are until 10:30 p.m. We asked if they had take-out menus from nearby restaurants we could look at and they said they would send them up. This they did quickly. We placed an order with a local Italian restaurant and we recieved our food in about an hour. In the meantime I went down to the bar to order some drinks to take back up to the room when lo-and-behold, the restaurant was open and they were seating people. Go figure.

Another thing that proved to be annoying was the fact that no "DO NOT DISTURB" card was placed in the room. One morning I had to interrupt what I was doing in the morning to tell house-cleaning to come back later and on another morning we came back to the room after breakfast to get ready to go into NYC only to find that the maid was in the room.

It takes a lot for me to complain - normally preferring to take any subsequent business elsewhere if I find the product and/or the service unsatisfactory. The fact that my girlfriend was running the marathon required a need for basic services like a dependable wake-up call and room service the night before and after the race. This did not seem like too much to expect from a Sheraton 4 Points. I will say the room was decent and the rate comparible to other hotels in the area - although the hotel is undergoing renovation and some parts of the building are very dated in areas that make you feel a little uncomfortable; like the elevators. Although I spoke to the front desk in person about our issues, as well as completing a customer survey card, never did we get anything other than an "I'm sorry." "I'm sorry" doesn't lighten the weight of the bill when one is charged and does not recieve the advertised level of service. This hotel in particular gives Sheraton and Starwood a black eye.

Good Value, Renovations Are Excellent, Keep up the Good Job!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I reserved the hotel through Hotwire at $65 a night plus taxes and service charges. After reading the comments on this web site, I was a bit scared about my reservations. However, the hotel was wonderful. We stayed on the 11th floor for 6 nights. This floor has been completely renovated and looks like new. The lobby and service we received from the front desk was great. There is a bus 1 1/2 blocks next to the hotel that drops you off in the middle of Times Square. The bus is #112 - New York by NJ Transit and costs $4.75 per person one-way. It takes about 30 minutes to get to New York. Overall, an excellent value, especially if you could stay on the 11th floor. We are very happy!

t expect service at breakfast

from Poormisty
My husband and i spent one night at this hotel in Oct. It was cnvenient to the airport and we were meeting 3 of his business associates for breakfast at the hotel. What a disaster. We planned to meet at 9 so we went in early and asked to move 2 tables together since there no round ones. We were told NO, we could not move tables. We were forced to seat 5 of us at a square table that had 4 placemats, no silverware. We noticed that even though it was a buffet, others had pots of coffee on the table. We could not get anyone to wait on us, bring us coffee, another placemat, or silverware or even a menu. After 20 minutes we finally got the coffee and cups but no saucers. I finaly got up and got the silverware from the service area. There were no saucers there, obviously they ran out. We begged for napkins and were rewarded with paper cocktail napkins from the bar. I might add that we are all seniors so we are not a roudy group. The buffet was pathetic, only one of us had the "full" buffet which consisted of cold watery eggs, cold potatos and cold bacon. My husband only had coffee and I tried a danish and oj. The danish was so hard and dry I could not cut it. The others had a half of dry bagel and oj. Someone actually came and asked us if everything was alright which was a joke because NOTHING was right. He then told us, it wasn't his station. Even though we expressed our displeasure when we got the check we were still charged for 4 continentals and one full buffet. Sheraton needs to take a look at this hotel dining conditions. They are doing renovations but a new coat of paint can't make up for extremely bad service.

This place was terrible

Four Points Barcelo Hotel Newark

This place was terrible. The location is very bad for access (i.e., in the middle of a transit terminal, so traffic was horrendeous because of all the ground transport coming out of Newark Airport, the Port of Newark, and Port Elizabeth); the only parking exit dumps you onto US-1 and you can only go in one direction, north into the Newark airport. There were not a lot of choices for restaurants within walking distance of the hotel: a McDonalds and a couple of really bad diners: one of which was attached to a strip club.

The staff was rude and unhelpful when I called for directions. In person, they were just as impersonal. The front desk staff was very rude and the bartender was absent for a long period even though there were customers waiting.

The hotel was under renovation during my stay and was very noisy all through the day. I had to go to six floors before I found and ice machine that worked. The room itself was dingy, unclean, and smelled of smoke. The windows were so filthy that you couldn't see out of them.

One of the telephones did not work, the one I needed for a dial-up internet connection. I would've expected high-speed internet access at a three-star business hotel, but it was my fault for not checking for the icon before I booked the room with Hotwire. The two public internet stations downstairs in the lobby were out of commission.

When I was leaving (on my way to a meeting), the parking attendant held me up for 10 minutes trying to call the front desk to find out whether I'd already paid my parking fee.

I could go on and on about this place.

A REALLY bad birthday

After my last two Four Points stays, I'm starting to question my loyality to Starwood. I had to take a last minute trip for work on my birthday and needed a hotel close to Newark. WOW, what a mess, it is under renovation and had a VERY low end tour group staying at the hotel clogging up the elevators, smoking in the hallways and partying all night. The seats in the cafe had tears in them and had a baked in smoke smell. The neighborhood looked like a ghetto. Hopefully once the renovations are complete they can charge higher rates and filter out the groups.

not the best quality and not the best service

from A TripAdvisor Member
It's not as good as you would expect from a Four Points. Overall, the hotel is a little old and the staff was not very helpful. Upon check in, we found that our room was NOT locked. No apology and was told that "it's just a common mistake, the maid probably forgot to lock the door". A min later, we found that there was NO towels in the bathroom. The maid did bring some towels to the room within minutes. It just kind of makes you think..was she really done cleaning the room if the towels weren't even replaced? And, it's common that the door is not locked between the time a maid is done cleaning the room and the time that a guest gets in a room? hmm....1 star is even too much!

Slow Poke Shuttle

from A TripAdvisor Member
The front desk staff provided excellent and courteous service. I cannot say the same for the maid service, there were 4 people staying in the room and when I requested additional towels, I was told that she may not be able to provided that many towels. I was there 4 days and everyday I had to request towels. Also, the shuttle services to the airport is a slow and chaotic process. Although you may have been waiting for the shuttle, its whoever can hop on the fastest that get the ride.

s improved

from A TripAdvisor Member
I've just concluded a 7 night stay here and I didn't think it was bad. I wouldn't classify the rooms as "high quality" but the hotel does currently have a restaurant that serves all 3 meals, room service, indoor/outdoor pool, fitness center, free wireless throughout the hotel, free USA Today and WSJ.

I was treated very well by staff and drivers. There are fast food restaurants and convenience stores within a third of a mile.

I'd say it's a 3 star in terms of services and a 2 star in terms of quality.

At the Priceline or Hotwire rates, I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

d stay there again!

All the reviews I'd read were terrible and I was prepared for the worst. I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was great and very helpful and polite, and the accommodations were acceptable. For the money and the location, I feel this hotel was a good value and I was very comfortable there.

A good, inexpensive hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having read some of the reviews --after I booked this on Hotwire--I was nervous. We were pleasantly surprised. The room and bathroom were clean and the room recently decorated. The sheets and linen were v. clean (sheets were on the thin side). I've stayed in rooms in mid-town Manhattan 4-star hotels that were less pleasant. We stayed 4 nights and were pleased with the housekeeping. Staff were pleasant and helpful. The shuttle (2 per hour) to the airport was on time and the drivers courteous and professional. Did encounter a vocal, demanding guest on the shuttle who (quite frankly) was out of line with ridiculous requirements and whining complaints. Hotel is not in a scenic neighborhood --I didn't feel it was dangerous--but it is an airport hotel...and Newark Airport is not known for its natural beauty either (duh!)

Top Local Tips for Elizabeth

Very Confusing to Find If you are coming from the Newark airport, you will need to turn yourself around on I 1& 9 in order to get onto the right side of the highway. My brand new Garmin system could not get this right and I spent about 10 minutes going in circles before I figured out what to do! Take your first left onto a side street and another left at a set of lights and get yourself going the right way that way. Also note- parking is $15/day and you will need to get your ticket stamped by front desk in order to prove you've paid for the day.

Do not stay at this hotel, there's bed bugs This hotel is the most disgusting hotel I've ever stayed at. The bed bugs is the biggest thing that throws me off. If you like it go right ahead.

Good value airport hotel This is a very nice and friendly hotel. Nice rooms, nice common areas and friendly staff. All is working well apart from the power in the shower.
