A Great Time Was Had By All!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
9 of us rolled into town on our Harleys on Tuesday, Sept. 21., with no reservations. Didn't expect to get a room because of Street Vibrations, but we were given great rooms on the 11th floor for $45 that night. Rooms was huge, spotless, and comfortable. Although overlooking the train, still had a great view, which who goes for the view from a room anyway? We could not hear the train unless we opened the window. Everyone met us with a smile and were very helpful. I worked out and spent a couple hours in the pool and hot tub. They opened the roof and it was totally enjoyable. They tried to find us rooms for the rest of the week, but were totally booked and I can see why.

A great time

Stayed at the Nugget September 8 - 12. Great room on the 23rd floor west tower. Great restaurants, gaming, helpful staff.

You know they are customer focused when you meet and talk with the sole owner and proprietor Mr. John Ascuaga. He walks the property visiting with guests each day.

Looking forward to a return visit, same time, next year.

Very Disappointing

from A TripAdvisor Member
My first and only visit was very disappointing. The room was not clean at all. Stains on the toilet bowl, carpeting that has not been cleaned in ages, huge stains on the furniture. The smoke alarm indicator light was not on so I don't know if the alarm was even active. Over all, I did not feel that this hotel would be worth another visit. I can get the same rate at other hotels which are very good.
The buffet was adaquate but not exceptional as I had been told.
The staff was very friendly.

The Nugget offered me everything I needed and the accommodations were just great! The room was very spacious and had the amenities I needed. The staff was also very helpful and made the stay most enjoyable. Definitely a recommended location!

t mention rooms with small hide away beds

from A TripAdvisor Member
The 1st 3 confirmation #'s were cancelled within seconds of being assigned by the hotel's reservation system. 4th one was for the rack rate but this was the only hotel that had acceptable reviews that allowed a Sat arrival on a holiday wkend so I kept the reservation. We were directed to walk thru lobby and take the west elevator to reach our room. But it turned out our room was on the east tower - reservation slip didn't say which tower. We were assigned to rm smaller than the living area of a suite. Coffee table had to be moved aside to lay out the hide-away-bed (looked like a double bed) and you had to squeeze your way to move across the room. Reservation system didn't show our room request for 2 beds in non-smoking rm so they assigned us to a "rm that could accommodate 2 adults." For $ 100 more, they could move us to a ste w/king bed. On the 3rd call, we were told we could move to another rm w/king, no additional charge. We arrived in the corner rm but it was smoking. Too tired to call or move again. Their website states all rms have either 1 king size bed or 2 qns. No mention of small hide-away-bed. If hotel was sold out, were they going to turn away the people in the check-in line? Hotel claims they have "perfected the art of guest svce" but the svce we got from the front dest was far from it. To be fair, the rm was clean and housekeeping was prompt in delivering extra pillows and delivering celfone that we forgot in the tiny room. 1st time guests, beware and consider other hotels before you book here unless you want to play russian roulette with room assigned to you.

Worst Hospitality

I paid $205.00 for one night at this hotel and it didn't even come with complimentary coffee. My husband and two year old daughter stayed at this hotel during a bowling tournament and my daughter woke up at 2am from a nightmare and was crying. Ten minutes later I had 4 security guards knocking on my hotel room door with restraints asking what the problem was and to bring my child to the door so that they could see that she was ok. I did not appreciate being accused of physically harming my child.

hotel room was great but.....

from motherdestiny
The hotel room was great but there were alot of things that weren't. I reserved the wedding chapel that was supposedly at the nugget, but guess what? It's actually at the very dinky Marriot next door. Trying to walk with a wedding gown and heels all the way around the block is not what i expected. The wedding chapel is a whole other story. Three words. Don't do it! The hotel room was very clean and had a wonderful view (we had a corner room facing the sierra nevada mountains). I only have one negative comment about the hotel room and that is the dresser having 3 out of the four handles on the drawers. The service at Rosie's Cafe was atrocious. The wait to be seated was 15 minutes. After being seated we waited another 15 minutes to give our order, although we were asked our drink order as soon as we sat down. In my opinion the waitresses are overworked. They need a bigger staff and a bigger facility. It took about 20 minutes to check out because the line was so long and there was only one girl at the reservation desk. Again, I think they need a bigger staff. Overall, I was dissappointed with just about everything. Just a note.... Local phone calls are a dollar a piece and they DO NOT state this in the room or on the phone itself.

great deal for the price

from anonymousBA
Just got back from a stay at John Ascuaga's nugget, and I have to say, it was a great deal for the amount we paid. I looked on their website on Friday, 1/9/04, and found that it was only $39/night for 1/9/04 and 1/10/04.... that's a WEEKEND STAY. However, on the downside, they did not seem to do a good job of cleaning the sheets (I found public hairs not belonging to me on them) Moreover, the toilet flushes weird sometimes, and their venting system throughout the hotel would ocassionally circulate stinky bathroom air. However, I requested a room in the west tower, as another reviewer had suggested, and did get a new room. I would suggest a higher floor because you get the most spectacular view of the mountains in the morning. The pool was too crowded and was filled with children; the water looked a murky green almost. Just as a warning their "7-8 jacuzzies", except for one, are so small!! (I think they were intended for kids, because only kids seemed to be using them) The pizza at Rosie's Cafe is great, but the lamb's leg special is hard on the stomach. The oyster bar was fair, nothing really to brag about. However, for the price we paid, and the fact they had a room available when we showed up at 11 am was great. All in all, I would recommend the Nugget IF you get a good deal on the rooms and want to gamble or play in their arcade after a day of skiing/snowboarding.

The rooms at the Nugget seriously need some upgrading. The floral wallpaper and the velour Baralounger reminded me of my Aunt Edna's apartment in Pasadena, circa 1974. We requested a non-smoking room, but ours reeked of cigarette smoke and featured a scorch mark on our velour bedspread. Climate control needed some help too. The thermostat either roasted you alive or froze you to death; nothing in between. On the other hand, the rooms are spacious and they're a good value too-if you can find a good hotel search engine. We paid only $32 a night.

Great Food/Not the Room

from A TripAdvisor Member
First of all, the bad stuff. One of the pillow cases was not changed.
Still had mascara on it. The bathrooms need some kind of ventilation.
Just because we used the ironing board, doesn't mean, that we'll be using it every day. Come on put it away. Now to THE GOOD NEWS: Ate at the Basque Restaurant and it was a pleasant experience. Our waiter Rob was excellent as was the food and wine. Next time, we'll upgrade to a better room and see if thats any different, but even if we decide to stay at another hotel, we will diffently eat again at that same restaurant.

Top Local Tips for Reno

Virginia City, NV If you have seen one of these old time historic towns in the west, you have seen them all. Not worth the visit. One small gift shop after another. One main street. Can see it all in about an hour. Opt for South Lake Tahoe or Donner Pass. Much more interesting.

You will need a car There is nothing to see nearby the hotel, except one small museum. You will need a car to see much of anything else. Cabs are expensive. Bus service is available.
