We have stayed at the Tropicana in Nov. 1999 and again in 2003, and would stay again if we were planning a trip that way. We like its location.

Hello! We just want to let you know that we had a wonderful time at the Tropicana Resort & Casino during our June trip. We wanted to stay on the strip and chose Tropicana for the location and price. We were NOT disappointed. The employees were courteous and friendly, the room was clean and spacious and we loved the pool. Thanks for a wonderful visit.

The Tropicana more than met our needs and expectations during our Valentine's Day 2004 wedding. With so many new luxury hotels jockeying for patronage along the Strip, there seems to be an overwhelming desire to stay at the most opulent establishment. To me, Vegas is best experienced in small doses. I like the legendary flavor of the "Rat Pack" era. I want to gamble and see as much as I can realistically appreciate in 3 or 4 days. Unless I plan on NEVER leaving my hotel or hotel room, I can't justify the 300 dollars a night price tag attached to so many of the "new luxury hotels" on the Strip. The Tropicana provided my husband and me and our wedding guests (16 in all) with all of the attention we would expect, on this special occasion. The hotel itself may be "old school", but it continues to hold its own amidst all the glitz and glamour of the Strip. The decor may be dated, but is that really an overall concern? Our room was exceptionally appointed--a jacuzzi suite with a fabulous view! Perfect for honeymoon intimacy as well as a reception with family and friends. We had a poolside ceremony. Very NICE!! Even with hundreds of other weddings taking place (it WAS Feb. 14th in Las Vegas!), the Tropicana's attention to detail made us feel as if our wedding was the only one that mattered! It was more extraordinary than my husband, myself, and our guests ever imagined--and we all commented to that effect!
I would do it all again and not change a thing!

Historical Traveller Reviews of Tropicana Resort & Casino Hotel

Good value with decent location

from etwil
The cheap price ($40) was the incitive to stay here on our 2 day trip through Vegas on our way to the Grand Canyon. After coming to the conclusion that it was just a place to sleep we booked this hotel instead of paying close to $100 for a better hotel. The location isn't in the center of the strip but that was fine with us since we had a rental car and could drive to the other parts of the strip easily.

Checkin took less than 2 minutes but we didn't check in until 11pm so that probably had something to do with it, but it was very easy and the front desk was friendly. I already knew about the $8 per day hotel fee that isn't included in the initial room price so just be aware of that but my understanding is that all the hotels have some kind of 'daily use' fee and $8 wasn't too bad.

The hotel is definitely dated but so are all the other discount hotels on the strip. Our room was a little cheesey with mirrors on the ceiling but it was clean and surprisingly quiet with it pretty much being right next to the airport. But it did start to smell like smoke the second day even though we were on a no smoking floor. I guess someone didn't follow that rule. We never once woke up to a plane during the night. The pool area was a nice getaway for the casino with lots of water features and a tropical environment. It's a great place to hang out, especially the swim up bar.

We didn't gamble at the hotel but it stayed pretty busy. I will say it seemed like 90% of the guests were over 50 and with us being in our 20s it wasn't really the place to hang out and gamble but we just went across the street to the NY hotel and had fun over there.

Overall if you're just looking for a place to sleep stay at the Tropicana and go have fun at some of the other hotels. I really enjoyed the pub bar at the NY hotel and also the dueling piano bar there as well. There's plenty to see and do in the nicer casinos but for the price you can't beat the Tropicana. We never ate at the hotel so I don't know how the food is, they definitely don't as many options as the larger hotels, but again, it's an easy walk to several hotels from the Tropicana.

Good Value and Location

from MrAsian96
I stayed (Paradise Tower) here for a conference that was held at the MGM and saved a ton of money (~$100/night). The Paradise Tower is the building closest to the strip and you are literally steps away from the walk way to the MGM or Excalibur.
My room was clean, adequate and had plenty of room. It still has a tube TV and some chips on the sink counter, so obviously not a 4 or 5 star establishment.
The gym is open 7 to 7 and even had free weights and a Smith Machine. Good pool area. I didn't eat that the restaurants, since there are better options at the neighboring hotels.
Overall if you're not planning to spend a lot of time in your hotel (example: guys road trip, business conference) this is a great place-walking distance to everything, cheap, clean. If you're looking to "wine and dine", then look to spend more money at one of the more posh establishments.

excellent value

from alwine01
I just loved it. we only spent 20 dollars a night and had a wonderfuld groundfloor-room facing the pool - 3 steps into the water; I loved swimming there alone in the middle of the night. The room had all it needed and I think you can`t beat the price, you really get a lot for your money.
Of course it is not a 5 - star - hotel, but for a room like that you would spend ten times more in other cities.

Old hotel and original staff

from KCaunterJeffery
The Tropicana is in a great location, however the back tower was old and shabby. The front tower had nice rooms but the hotel over all was old and shabby. The majority of the staff had been there since it had opened, and the service was bad, except by the staff in the buffet. The staff that served for our banquet was terrible, the spilt drinks, hit people in the head with plates, all but threw the plates on the tables and were rude.

a good place to be

from AvidTravellerVillach
Reading the many negative reviews I was truly concerned and then pleasantly surprised. Yes there were spots on the carpet, but the room was large and comfortable facing the Strip (you should take a room in one of the towers, the Garden Kabanas are old and lots of noise from the street). Service and cleaning was totally ok and given the low rate I just imagined how stupid people in the neighboring 5 star luxury temples would feel, if they only knew about this place.

Check-in as well as check-out was fast and friendly. No queues neither in front of the counter, nor in front of the elevators. Yes one walks through the Casino; so what this is Las Vegas.

The pool area is well kept and there is sun from 10.00 AM til evening and lots of really good music, life guards on duty and all.

The only negative experience was the food. You have to buy a buffet for Breakfast and the quality is mediocre - so you better eat somewhere else.

Summary: Good place to chill, gamble and sleep.

Disappointed!

from poolbuilder
Have stayed at the Tropicana many times. Although we did get the room we requested and it was good, things are definately going downhill at the Trop! VIP is now closed, the coffee shop closed, garden cafe now moved and very small. We were told VIP is only open during slot tournaments - I played in a slot tournament while I was there!! They were supposedly installing a new computer system for the comps - I have no idea what they comped me. The cocktail waitresses are fantastic, room service very good - but they always have been. The hypnotist show was a joke, don't bother. The magic show is good. The buffet is really too expensive. I really like staying at the Trop, I sure hope they will straighten things up there. I am seriously considering finding another place. But I will say all employees I came in contact with were fantastic.....sure hope they are treated well!

Ugh - old and dated

from FYI1co
The staff are nice and it's close to the airport. Unfortunately, the Trop is really old and dingy. We were awakened each morning to the mudjacking crew trying to fix the foundation and kept awake each night by TVs and other guests's conversations through paper-thin walls. Tip the maids, Lord knows they're trying their best with a not a lot to work with. Oh, and watch out for the grizzled bartender named Drew; he's a crotchety and really should retire.

Do yourselves a favor and stay someplace else.

Pleasantly surprised!

from cnd_vacation_luvr
We checked in close to 4am in the morning after a grueling day's travel and picked up a large room with a wonderful full view of the Strip for less than $50 a night after all fees and taxes.

My wife loved the pool area and I loved the cocktail service in the casino.
Our room service breakfast order arrived in less than 10 minutes, which is blazing fast anywhere.

Yes, the place seemed to be last decorated in the 70s and the carpets and walls were showing their age. Nonetheless, I have to admit kind of liked the unintentional retro feel of one of the oldest resorts on the Strip.

The staff were all attentive and friendly, and that's a lot more than I can say for the aloof, impersonal service we've received at the Luxor, MGM, and Mandalay Bay properties. Did I mention it was $50 a night?

Just a place to lay your head

from austingrrl1
We just came back from Vegas this past weekend and stayed at the Tropicana. I'd read all of the horror stories and was prepared for what I got: dirty carpets in the hallway, check. No A/C: check. But for the price we got a clean room and really, what more could you ask for? If you're hanging out in your room while in Vegas you're doing it wrong.

Could have done without the girl in the casino restroom crying on a toilet while her friend screamed at her for overdoing it on coke. Okay, it was funny.

Enjoyed Our Stay

from admtiger
We too were leary after reading some of the reviews. We stayed in Paradise Tower and found it clean and comfortable. There was never a problem getting to and from the 17th floor. We only ate breakfast there so can only speak of the Garden Cafe and it was good every time. We enjoyed the pool area as well. My only negatives are no Pai Gow and we like playing that, and like the other places we went the slots were very tight. The price was great and we would return.

Top Local Tips for Las Vegas

Champagne Helicopter Trip to the Grand Canyon Going on one of these is worth every single penny (cent) of the approx $300 each

Yummo We dined at Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill. The barbecue lamb cobb salad was delicious and so was the orange cheesecake with the tequila granita side.

Great Restaurant for a Special Event.... We recommend Top of The World, on top of the Stratosphere. We had a (costly) but wonderful experience, something you must do once in a lifetime.
