Top Local Tips for West Yellowstone
Not just a national park. The Gallatin Gateway (191) road from Bozeman to West Yellowstone is beautiful in winter, but has many accidents. Take in Quake Lake north and west on 287 past Hebgen Lake. It's about 25 miles and It is very interesting, but isn't open in winter. Read about it before you go if it is in the winter. There was a large earthquake with a huge landslide in the late 1950's and 29 people were killed. Also, the IMAX Theater in West Yellowstone is so cool, especially if children are in your party. There weren't any kids in ours, but we still enjoy going every time we stay in town. It is open all year. West Yellowstone in the winter caters to snowmobilers. There are many rental agencies in town and motels have lots of parking for trailers and sleds. There are plenty of places outside the park to ride.
Yellowstone Park Staying at W. Yellowstone is a great option for visiting the park. It is just outside the gate and an easy ride in each day. Staying the the park is expensive and reservations are hard to come by. You can see all there is to see by staying outside.
Very Convenient to Yellowstone We chose West Yellowstone as it was very close to the west entrance of Yellowstone (our destination). We could have stayed at lodges inside the park but those do not allow cooking. We were staying for 5 days and wanted to do our own cooking being vegetarians and all. The lodges inside the park are very convenient location wise but are not that good as a lodging (old and rustic). If you stay at West Yellowstone, please do visit the Grizzly Bear Discovery Center as it has tons of information, movies about bears and wolves and also has live bears and wolves. Also, do make it a point to visit the Yellowstone IMAX theatre for a show or two.
