Historical Traveller Reviews of Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort West Yellowstone Hotel

from nmj
We were expecting quite a good hotel - but it was very basic and in need of updating.

Hotel restaurant is expensive and mediocre.

On our 2nd and last morning we did not have breakfast-as this was also VERY poor.

All in all an OK stay, but not memorable - Yellowstone National Park was!

Not sure what the alternaatives are like, but would not return again.

Convenient and comfortable

from livewireworld
Booked one of the suites with 3 queen beds which gave us some needed extra room. Check-in was smooth and front desk staff always helpful. Room was very comfortable. Only fault was some peeling wallpaper in the bathroom, but that was minor. Had no problem with the internet connection. No views here, but I don't think there is from any of the lodging in West Yellowstone. Housekeeping very quick to bring extra towels.

The hotel is only 2 blocks from the shopping area and practically across the street from the History museum. When you pull out of the lot, you're in Yellowstone in less than a mile.

Kids enjoyed the pool and we liked the lounge/bar with a pool table and about 10 slot machines.

We were on a tight schedule and there was still a lot of the park we didn't see, so when we return, we'll definitely stay here.

OK lodging close to the park

from TravelsFun
The Sunspree is an OK hotel. Staff was nice and the room was comfortable. We had trouble with the drapes, and someone came right away to help us. We got the special room we requested. The front desk clerk failed to notice that we were booked for two nights, so on the second night, our card key no longer worked. It was inconvenient to have to go back to the desk. We'd stay here again.

Very good stay at West Yellowstone Holiday Inn

from ute_fan
We just returned from a one night stay at the Holiday Inn in West Yellowstone. It's been a long time since I stayed in a Holiday Inn, and we were very impressed with this one. Our room was large -- 2 queen beds plus a sitting area with a small love seat. There was a coffee maker, refridgerator, and microwave in the room. Since we were only there overnight, we didn't use them, but they would be nice for a longer visit. The room is nicely laid out, with two vanities located outside the toilet/bath area.

We found the beds very comfortable, and loved the 4 nice pillows that were placed on each bed. I hate the skinny pillows that so many hotels use, and these ones were great. I would have rated this hotel as excellent except for 2 small issues. The first one was the shower in the bathroom -- perfectly adequate, but nothing spectacular. It had just a normal shower head, and we're spoiled by the adjustable flow ones. The second issue was that we were very conscious of noise coming from the room above us. There were repeated "thuds" coming from up above us -- and the noise went on quite late -- well after midnght. Judging from the noise, I'd guess that there were children up there either jumping on the beds or running around the room. Yes, I have children and traveled with them when they were small. My son was quite rowdy, but I certainly wouldn't have let him go on making noise like that until midnight. I realize you can't blame the hotel for lack of parental control, but the area between the two floors didn't seem to be very soundproofed.

We felt that cost was quite high, but all the hotels in West Yellowstone are expensive, especially on a Saturday night. We would definitely consider this hotel next time we return to West Yellowstone.

Convenient to Yellowstone

from lirwin13
This Holiday Inn is a typical chain hotel. If you're planning to spend time in Yellowstone, West Yellowstone is the perfect place to stay. The trip into the park is short and you can easily access the upper and lower loops for day trips. The front desk staff were helpful, and the room was adequate. Nothing fancy, but all of the amenities you would expect, including an in-room refrigerator and microwave, and a computer in the lobby with internet access. I was disappointed with the shower, as the water sprayed all over with no way to adjust it. The hairdryer was useless. Very old and didn't do anything. The restaurant was decent, but the breakfast food was nothing outstanding. Overall, a decent place to stay in West Yellowstone and convenient to the park.

A good choice

from Tex96
After driving around West Yellowstone and seeing the other hotels and motels available, I think we made a good choice in deciding to stay here. When we made the reservation online (Holiday Inn web site), it said that the price jumped almost $100 for the second night, so we only booked the Holiday Inn for the first night and booked the Best Western Desert Inn for the second night (very similar in price and amenities). When we checked in at the Holiday Inn, the receptionist told us that the price should have been the same for both nights. Call the actual hotel and make the reservation if this happens to you.

The town is not very big so walking from the hotel to shopping and dining options is very easy. The west entrance to Yellowstone is also down the street from the hotel. After checking out the north entrance to Yellowstone (Gardiner, MT), the west entrance is definitely better.

The hotel room was large and contained the amenities described by others. It did seem a little expensive but welcome to Yellowstone in the summer! I'll pay a little more to cut down on "surprises." Actually, the vast majority of the time was spent in the national park anyway, so our time in the room was quite limited. Based on the other options in the area, we would probably stay here again.

Great Place to Stay!

Our family just returned from a weeklong visit to Yellowstone. We flew into the West Yellowstone airport - which is two miles north of town. It is open from June through late September to smaller commuter flights. Our main hub was in Salt Lake City. This is by far the smallest airport I have ever been in, but upon arrival, we called the hotel and a shuttle was there by the time our luggage arrived. Avis and Budget also have car rental booths at the airport.

West Yellowstone is a very charming little town, with about 900-1000 people that live there year round. The town is located at the West entrance of the park, and I don't think that we met anyone who didn't offer information or suggestions on how best to enjoy ourselves. The town is quiet and definitely family oriented. Most of the restaurants are family owned and operated. I did see a McDonald's, but most everything else is a non-franchised business. However, if you tell somebody what you are interested in finding - they will direct you to the best place.

Our room at the Sunspree was very large - a King bed with a queen pullout sofa. We had a sink and vanity area separate from the bathroom ( which also had a sink). This made it nice when getting ready in the mornings or at bedtime. We also had a microwave and small refridgerator along with the coffepot.

The front desk crew was always smiling and ready to offer any assistance for a fun day. Tours came directly to the hotel for pickup. ( We used the See Yellowstone tour group which included a meal with your full day tours.)

When the laundry soap wouldn't release from the machine in the coin operated laundry, the front desk had someone to help me within about two minutes. We had one day when our son wasn't feeling good, and mentioned it to the staff. When we returned after an midmorning visit to the IMAX theater, his bed was opened up and ready for him to lay down and rest. The housekeepers noticed that we like extra coffee, so they always left extra packs.

The facility has a nice pool and hot tub area, along with an exercise room. Coffee was available in the front lounge area in the morning. They had a full service restaurant, but also kept a large cart stocked with waters, juices, muffins, and cookies in case you needed to run quickly.

All in all, the facility was great - clean, quiet, and very friendly. We felt that we had discovered a treasured secret when we came to West Yellowstone. I would love to return again, perhaps in the winter and see how things operate.

Whether you are a "nature" person or not, Yellowstone should be on your list of places to go and take your kids. There aren't many places left where humans haven't been allowed to come in and mess things up. The laws of nature definitely rule in Yellowstone - and we are merely guests.

Thanks to Trip Advisor - your site is great to plan your vacations!!

Enjoyed our stay

from ladcraig
The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was rather large and attractive as well as being very clean. We enjoyed our stay and would stay at this hotel again.

Skip the Restaurant

from Riteside
The Hotel itself is up to Holiday Inn standard but the service in the restaurant is very slow and the meals are over priced. You're better off in any of the nearby cafes or diners.

Better then expected

from Got_News
Stayed there for a single night during a quick photo shoot in Yellowstone and was pleasantly surprised with the friendly staff and clean comfortable rooms. The food at the restaurant was your typical greasy spoon restaurant, just OK nothing great. I would and plan on staying again when I visit Yellowstone with family.

Top Local Tips for West Yellowstone

Spirit of the North Dogsleds Jessie and the dogs are fantastic! This is one of the few things that we've done that everyone in our family loved! It was athletic/adventurous enough for my teen son, while still being pleasant for the rest of the family.

Yellowstone Park awesome Great accommodation near the park

Timberline Cafe The is a very nice affordable cafe with good homemade food and very freindly and effecient service. We really enjoyed the western style cooking and three of us ate there for about $35 for a very large eveneng meal. Its kind of in the centre of Yellowstoine Ave.
