Historical Traveller Reviews of Sheraton Suites Plaza Hotel

This is the best hotel on the Plaza - which is sad

from Writer/Director
The Sheraton on the Plaza is by far the best hotel on the Plaza. The Raphael smells and has outdated furniture with craftmanship and design appropriate for a trailer park (think furniture from a furniture store showroom), the Marriott has foam beds (hopefully they finally got around to changing them into real beds) and keeps its central heat waay too high (and their windows don't open); the Fairmont has Holiday-Inn-like rooms (which isn't worthy of the price) and also keeps their heat set too high; the Embassy Suites (which technically is no where near the Plaza) is dark and has a chlorine smell from the atrium (and also keeps the central heat set too high).

The Sheraton is the only hotel on the Plaza where one can actually control the AC or Heating in each individual room. It's also the only hotel on the Plaza with a really comfortable bed, and perfect location (you can walk everywhere). It's the best.

That's the sad part.

Why can't Kansas City have a luxury hotel? I mean really! Every major city has a hotel worthy of being called a luxury hotel. All the hotels in KC are outdated and need major million-dollar makeovers. Not makeovers - total overhauls!

On this trip to the Sheraton we had returned from a lovely dinner out on the Plaza, changed into our pajamas, climbed into bed for a movie and room-service. We picked up the phone - to no dial tone.

We checked the other phone, no dial tone either. Not even the fax machine (which is too big for the room, come on guys - I have a xerox in my office smaller than that fax!) had a dial tone. So we got the cell phone out and dialed the number on the hotel phone - in order to call downstairs.

The woman who answered the phone was in the main Sheraton reservations department (not even located in Kansas City) and claimed she had no ability to call the front desk for me. I asked to speak to the manager, and their manager, and that person's manager... None of the people had the ability to telephone the hotel to tell them my phones weren't working. Isn't that peculiar? The telephone number on the phone doesn't go to the hotel. It was like living in the twilight zone!

The most frustrating part was having to get out of bed, get dressed, walk down to the front desk to report our phones were out and ask for some room service. Lousy bargain for the price if you ask me!

When I got to the front desk there was a pile of flyers alerting all guests that the phone service for the entire hotel was out. A part was being flown in and they hoped to have the phone lines working by the next evening. (This flyer should have been slipped under every door at the hotel, so guests would know what the devil was going on. It was a poor choice to not alert guests what was happening!)

Obviously a disaster such as this has never happened here before (the staff were really not prepared to deal with it, and it showed).

Upon checking out the next morning, the guy at the front desk actually asked, 'Did you enjoy your stay with us?" I said, "No." He thought I was joking. So I informed him what had happened (it's like he didn't know the phones were out). He gave me $50 off on my bill. In hindsight, I should've demanded a free night's stay, but figured I'd probably never stay there again... Until I remembered there was no where else to stay on the Plaza as good.

Clearly this is s sign to avoid the Plaza and stay downtown at the Hotel Phillips (I haven't stayed there yet but it looks like KC's last hope!)

MOTEL Sheraton

from A TripAdvisor Member
While the hotel has a great spot on The Plaza it's over priced for what it REALLY is. It's a motel dressed up to look like a hotel. We've stayed here frequently for business and I still can't believe we have a corporate account there.
The rooms smell of cigarette smoke, the carpet and bedspreads are stained & worn. During one stay there was black mold growing on the bathroom tiles. If you want to stay on the Plaza try the Fairmont or Raphael. Sometimes you can get great deals there. If not, try the Marriott or Emabasst suites. These two aren't much better than the Sheraton though.
** I've stayed at every hotel on the Plaza and I'm constantly dissapointed with hotel service overall.

Great Hotel..Great Location

from Trvltwo
We stayed at the Sheraton Suites over Labor Day weekend for 3 nights, and we found the hotel to be an excellent choice. The suites were large, with a separate bedroom with french doors. Huge windows with a great view of the plaza area, a refrigerator, sofa sleeper, 2 tvs, and a desk with 2 chairs. The room was clean, and the furnishings were nice. There was some mold in the tub/shower, but just on the caulking on one side. The tub itself was clean. The beds were ok, (better than most hotels) it said they were the "Sweet Sleeper" beds, but I have stayed at other Sheratons that had much more comfortable beds. The indoor/outdoor pool is awesome, it does not get sun until later in the day, as others have stated, but it is heated. We really enjoyed our morning swims, and the hot tub is the best I have ever been in...really really hot, and strong jets!! The only downfall is, it is only open until 10pm. We could have used it in the evening after walking around the plaza all day!! The area around the indoor pool is very slippery when wet though!! The staff was very friendly and helpful, and check-in took all of 2 minutes, check out even less! We did not eat in the restaurant, but did have cocktails, and appetizers the 1st night in the bar. The elevators are a little confusing (some had complained about them in an earlier review) as not all go to the parking garage, but it there is one that does go from the garage to the top floor. Once you figure out the system it is very easy. You cannot beat the location, all the best restaurants, nightlife, movies, and shopping are within a few blocks. We would definitely recommend, and we will stay there again.

needs much improvement!

The room was great- all are suites, but the hotel was lacking otherwise. The parking rate had gone up $2.00 since I booked the stay, the elevators were very slow on the weekends, and only one elevator went from all the floors to the parking garage:otherwise you had to switch elevators in the lobby to get to the garage. It took them 2 days to get the air conditioning fixed in our room. We decided to take advantage of the club level for Monday and Tuesday. We went up for breakfast Monday, and found that they did not start serving breakfast until Tuesday. The evening cocktail period was very dissapointing- eggrolls and cheese. We had to pay additionally for our drinks(overcharged)- we added a gratuity as that was mentioned on the form to sign, but then the front desk told us that the gratuity was added in ! The next morning, we got to the club 30 minutes before it closed. They had a paltry selection of pastries(3), and cereals. The server said that she was closing soon, so was not going to get anything more. After questioning reasoning about this, she did go down and get some pastries. Additionally the pool gets no sun until 12:15 p.m., so for those of us sun lovers, it was very irritating. I do have to compliment the staff because they were very nice, and did credit us for the parking, and all food expenses. The location is very good for the Plaza( and the beds are great!!), but I would not stay there again.

Great Hotel! Great Location

from Buckeye460
Great Place! The location is perfect for upscale shopping and dining. Within the surrounding 14 blocks (all a pleasant walk) there are many upscale stores and quaint shops. Unusual and upscale resturants are all within an arms reach.
The hotel itself is nice and relatively quiet. Beware the swimming pool is on the west side of the 15 story building so the direct sun doesn't reach the pool until 1-2pm each day. If your a morning tanner/swimmer, the pool area is not at all conductive.
Rooms are great size and well furnished. The bathtub needed a good coat of enamel however. Sweet Sleeper beds are well worth the extra cost compared to a Holiday Inn bed. Rooms are a little pricey but I found out too late they do give an Entertainment member discount saving about $25.00 per night.
The biggest draw back is the distance from MCI (Kansas City Airport) it is a good 30-40 minute drive. If you take the KCI shuttle roundtrip fare is $27.00 but it takes about an hour to get t the hotel. Cab fare is $44.00 one way !!
I fully enjoyed my stay and found this to be a about a 4 star hotel

Sheraton Suites....We loved it!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our family of three just returned from KC....our experience was much better than we expected. I was concerned about the rooms after reading the information from previous posts. We stayed in the Club Level rooms which I believe are exactly the same as all the other rooms, however you will receive a continental breakfast Tues-Friday and a social hour from 5-8 Monday-Thursday. Both were nicely served in the Club Room (there is a charge for alcoholic beverages). Our room was very clean and quite nice....we had a microwave as well as a refrigerator. The hair dryer was good and strong....the bed was AWESOME! Our daughter loved the privacy of her own room behind French doors. The room is a bit cramped to walk around when the sofa sleeper is out....our only complaint. The front desk is wonderful.....and the greeters at the front door are so pleasant and friendly. We swam in the pool all to ourselves and worked out in the small gym. Our stay in KC was wonderful thanks to the Sheraton Suites

Great location...rooms need work

from codejd
While you cannot argue with the location, the rooms are in definite need of repair. The carpet is dark and dated, the wallpaper is peeling and there is some type of problem with the plumbing causing both strange gurgling noises and low shower pressure.

However, the "heavenly bed" is just that and the "suite" atmosphere is nice. The lobby, bar, etc. are still in tact but the rooms are in need of updating and modernizing.

Still a great location and a great rate!

Best regards,

I have stayed at the Sheraton Suites many times. The location is great and within walking distance to shopping and restaurants on the Plaza. However, the last few times I've been there the maintenance was not up to par. The heater in the room blew cold air and we finally turned it off; the hair dryer didn't work; the light bulb in one of the bedside tables was burned out. I mentioned these problems when I checked out and the clerk said "this is not acceptable." I agreed - but there was no offer to compensate or do anything about the shoddy maintenance.

Carpets filthy.

from A TripAdvisor Member
I used to stay here everytime I went to KC (2 or 3 times a year) but the property is not kept up like it should be or used to be. The last time I was here the carpets were filthy - so dirty I could not put my toddler on the floor. The bathroom did not look clean and I had to scrub it myself. The location is great but they need to clean the place more throughly. I will be staying somewhere else next time.

Sheraton Suites was ok

from soleglo
We stayed in the Sheraton Suites 10/1-10/3. We had a suite, and it was very small. I agree with the previous review, that it appears that they only put a wall up to divide the king bed from the sofa sleeper. The room was clean and so was the hotel. Check in was a breeze, and so was parking. The parking is underground and you can come and go as you please. The inside portion of the pool is small but it was perfect for my sons 12 and 9. The outside portion is larger and is no deeper than 5 feet. Location is at the end of the Plaza but you can easily walk to every shop and sites. Convenient to expressways also.

Best BBQ The best BBQ we had during our whole trip was at Jack Stack at the east end of Country Club Plaza. My husband is BBQ freak and researched many different restaurants that we tried - this one was by far the best!
