Historical Traveller Reviews of InterContinental at the Plaza Hotel

Great Hotel and location

from yayalady
We just returned from a wonderful stay at this hotel. Our beautiful room was located on the 11th floor and had a balcony overlooking the river and the plaza . We were just across the hallway from concierge lounge. The view from the lounge was awesome, and the food was wonderful. I was told that the hotel is going to be completely redone. They may have some older sections, but as far as my room and the areas I was in, it couldn't have been nicer.

I didn't use the pool, since it was cloudy, but the pool area with it's waterfalls was beautiful. There is great shopping and architecture on The Plaza that has to be seen to be believed. The area is modeled after Seville, Spain, one of Kansas City's sister cities, the area features magnificent Spanish tile, piazzas, and terra cotta rooftops. It is also called the "City of Fountains." There seems to be a fountain on nearly every corner. You can walk to the wonderful Nelson-Atkins Museum, but beware that they are closed on Monday.

This city could be on everyone's list of places to visit. This hotel is in the prefect location.

Ick

Out dated and over priced. Stayed three nights in April this year. Rooms are very old looking, carpet is stained and the bathroom floor had not been cleaned since I don't know when. The food served in this hotel was surprisingly very good - too bad the room bordered on disgusting. Needs some major updates and cleaning done....expected a lot more.

Rethink

We live in the area but often stay at local hotels for special occasions and holidays. We booked the Intercontinental on the Country Club Plaza for March 17th. This is an older property and we were prepared for some signs of it's age. The room is nicely decorated with a balcony. Here are the nit picky things: 1. the armoire had a large (3 by 5 inch)piece of veneer broken off the front of the door 2. marks on the walls 3. Floor uneven and carpeting had small visable stains. The room was extremely warm - unbearable. The weather is a little crazy in kansas city at this time of year so we turned the air down and left for dinner hoping that the room would cool down. When we came back 2 hours later the temparture had not changed. This would have been a huge issue for us but we opened the door to the patio as it was cool outside and that cooled the room down satisfactorily. So again it was fine, not great but fine. The bed was very nice with ample pillows.
The major problem was a shower that did not drain.
We took showers in the evening and noticed that the drain was not draining but assumed that by morning the built up water would be gone. This is where we determined we will not be staying there again. The next morning, the water was still sitting in the tub. There was about 3 inches of dirty water. Gross! We discussed our options and determined that we would cancel our in room breakfast, throw on clothes and go home. Thank goodness we had the luxury of going home to shower. We discussed telling the front desk and determined that if they asked we would tell them but if they did not ask they obviously were not interested. They did not ask how our stay was so we left without discussing our dissatisfaction. Obviously, if we were not local, we would have had to complain as there was no way I was showering in that cold dirty water from the night before. Also, we had booked at a very good price $130 with taxes. Honestly, had we paid much more than that, I would have been more vocal. There are many wonderful hotels in Kansas City including some on the Plaza that are similar to that price and much nicer.

bad service

from poshbaby24
I was at the Intercontinental to eat lunch and it took them almost an hour to get our food. There was no service at all. The waitress took our order, but never gave us our drinks , so we ended up canceling our food order and went to a better hotel that treated us well. The Intercontinental was not at all busy.

Cold shower!

from Arkasnastraveler
We were book at this hotel to attend a meeting. We arrived mid afternoon to find that our room was not ready. They promised a room in 30 minutes but it was over an hour before a room was ready. When we went to our assinged room there was a gentleman in the room having a drink and working on his computer. We later found out that we were not the only people who were assigned to rooms that were already occupied.
We did get a nicer roo. The next monring the shower would not work at all. Engineering did fix that problem later in the day but the water pressure in the shower/tub was just a trickle and only one setting provided warm water, not hot water.
Others attending the meeting said they had little or no hot water. That is certainly not anything that you would expect at a hotel of this level. Complaints at the bell desk were met with commnets that the hotel is old and doesn't have good plumbing. So, I would not recommend a stay at the hotel but if you do stay, check the pressure and for hot water before accepting a room.

Not Worth the Money

Stayed here for two nights for a long weekend. I was surprised that it is a five star hotel. The food is medicore, the room is just ok. This is an old facility with a fresh coat of paint. The decor is typical in the rooms, but it just does not come off as a five star place. For the price there must be better options in KC.

Badly in need of renovation

from traveler8472
I stayed at this hotel for one night and was very disappointed. I first must say that the staff, especially the manager and concierge staff, were extremely friendly and helpful. What really disappointed me was the room. It had so much potential, but was in a bad state of disrepair. Positives: my room was a suite, and had two tvs with good cable and movies, and two(!) bathrooms. The bed was very comfortable--it was a king-size bed with a cozy comforter and many pillows. There was a very nice bathrobe and good bath products (a bath gel that smelled delicious, two different types of Lord&Mayfair soaps, and lots of extras).
On the bad side--the carpet was weird, cheap-looking, and frayed. The beautiful marble bathrooms were messed up with hideous wallpaper, drapes on the balcony doors need replacing (frayed and dirty), and furniture should be re-finished or replaced. The shabby-chic look at the Intercontinental ends up just looking shabby. This hotel is a beautiful property, and there are so many charming things about it. Cleaning up the decor in the rooms would make it a first-class hotel.

Good location, front office needs a lot of help

from Insideinfo77
First, a qualification: I've stayed in this property under different managements (independent, Ritz-Carlton, Fairmont and now Intercontinental) more nights than I can definitively recall, but at least 200. It's got a very good Plaza location but my most recent non-stay is a saga that qualifies as a tragedy. Fairmont's lease expired and Intercontinental (not-ready-for Prime Time) took over the property management. Somehow the Intercontinental phone reservations line booked three rooms instead of one for my wife about two minutes apart for each of them. When illness forced a cancellation, they only canceled one of the rooms and we did not know of the other two until the credit-card no-show bill arrived. After a non-returned voicemail call left after hours, a personal visit to the front desk on another trip (we stayed at another hotel due to the aggravation from the non-returned phone call) that produced not even a response after all the documents were photocopied and left for a reply, a faxed letter a few days later, follwed by multiple calls to various persons on the property, we were promised a full credit. That was ten days ago and nearly-daily calls have promised the credit each time along with multiple assertions that it has already been put through, etc. etc. The credit card company has no record of the credit ever being issued after more than a week. This is the gang that cannot shoot straight. The property has been without a general manager for a period and (maybe) things will go better after they actually get someone on-site and in charge.
This property has a history of HVAC issues in the rooms, as any regular guest can tell you. The service personnel on the driveway are as good as anywhere. Rooms are generally fairly clean, decently sized, many have decent views or better and most of the guest service personnel (but not front desk) are "friendly or better." The location is good for Plaza shopping. The back office appears to be in a complete mess.

Best Hotel in Kansas City

from golf4fun69
This is one of my favorite hotels in the country. The location by the Country Club Plaza is perfect and the staff is the best. We had a beautiful room overlooking the Plaza. I think everyone when considering where to stay in Kansas City should pick the Intercontinental

Great stay and did not experience the negatives described below

from dbninva
Was hesitant to try out this property considering almost all negative reviews below, but as a Royal Ambassador member entitled to free upgrades to suites, I decided to give this a shot. Pretty much the whole stay was great - friendly check in, great suite on the 11th floor (where the club lounge was as well), free parking (not sure how we got that as the web site as well as reviewers mentioned it was not free), easy and non eventful check out.

The suite was large, clean comfortable bed (down comforter was great), 2 bathrooms, separate living room. No real hint of worn down as other reviewers mentioned. Probably the only two negatives were slight mustiness in the air and a floorboard corner molding that was cracked.

Lounge food (great spread, free booze, during posted hours) and offerings were great and above average at the many Intercontinentals I've stayed, so perhaps the property is turning around and addressing reported issues.

Great gym (machines, free weights, cycles, ellipticals), complete with wet and dry sauna (at least in the men's area!). Didn't use the pool.

Realize my experiences may have been different due to Royal Ambassador status (ie rooms on other floors could be needing refurbishment), but aspects which were non-specific (friendly front desk/lounge/parking staff, lounge food and drink, above avg gym) were all above average to great.
