Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Phillips

High Class place, very quiet

from A TripAdvisor Member
I really enjoyed this place, very quiet and super comfy rooms. The staff was evry friendly and made you feel at home. The hotel had some unique room features and felt like a good pampering. The only bad thing was paying for parking and the calls for the internet were not free. I would recommend this place and hope for it on the Priceline. I booked it for $50

Fabulous and First Class

The Hotel Phillips is our new favorite place to stay in Kansas City. I was surprised to read so many negative reviews of this hotel, because we found the hotel to be a special, one-of-a-kind experience. The hotel is in a beautifully restored Art Deco building with a memorable lobby: lots of dark wood, a grand staircase, a balcony, and a goddess statue looking down upon it all. The rooms were large and inviting and spacious (even the bathroom) and beautifully decorated with attention to the smallest details. There were many special touches which combined to give you a luxurious experience at a reasonable price. The linens were lovely and the beds outragesouly comfortable, with lots of pillows and sheets with a high thread count. In the morning, newspapers were delivered to your room. Bathrobes were provided and in the bathroom had a make-up mirror, Aveda soaps, and a faucet that was way cool!

There are two restaurants on-site which we didn't try -- Kansas City is a gourmet food destination with its wonderful signature barbecue restaurants and Lydia's Kansas City, among others -- that you would get much more of a Kansas CIty experience by going outside the hotel. However, after dining elsewhere, the bar is a lovely spot to stop off for a nightcap.

One caveat: Staying in downtown Kansas City would probably not be the best option if you do not have a car. There are few options within walking distance and the streets can be eerily empty at night. So if you would prefer to stay in an area where shopping and restaurants are in your midst, you might prefer to stay at the Rapfael Hotel in the Plaza.

We regret that we were only staying one night at this lovely hotel, but we will definitely be back.

beautiful lobby...beware, not as it appears!

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Phillips for a weekend in June, 2004. Upon check-in, we thought this was going to be a great hotel. The lobby is stunning. We took the upgrade for a room, but when we got to the room..we had a hard time believing that the room was upgraded as it was very small. The bed was partially broken on the one side and I actually fell out during the night! The general cleanliness was not good, but we cleaned up ourselves a bit. We attempted to eat in their restaurant that evening and arrived about a half hour before their closing time (which we did not realize how early they closed as it was our plan to shop in the Plaza before eating at their restaurant.) The person seating asked if we were sure we wanted to eat there! I'm sure because we looked puzzled...he went on to explain that they would be closing in half an hour. We ordered room service which turned out to be a disappointment. Very high cost served cold and tasted like it was out of a vending machine. We will certainly think twice before staying here again.

A charming and beautiful hotel!

After reading the decidedly mixed reviews on this site, I felt compelled to write a rejoinder. I went down to Kansas City for a weekend out and was nothing but pleased with the attentiveness of the staff and the pretty hotel!

This is a beautifully restored building, and there are little gems such as the crown molding, and the nicely tiled bathroom floors, heavy wood doors, and funky water faucets. The water pressure was fine, and the Aveda bath products were a nice surprise. We requested turn-down service and more bath products, and housekeeping was there in less than 10 minutes!! The staff/front desk/doormen were wonderful and very nice; they answered every question we had.

Our view was terrific. We got a corner room on the 8th floor, and had three large windows in our room, letting just the right amount of sunlight in (I could even check on if my car from our window - we were lucky enough to get on-street parking - free on the weekends; then we walked & took cabs). The live plant was a nice touch, and the decor is pretty and soothing. The bed is prettily appointed with softly colored linens (no glaring floral, horribly thin comforters here!), and they are VERY comfortable.

We're going back soon, but this time, we'll go to the Westin-Crown Center (for comparison's sake). However, if we had a choice my friend and I would definitely choose to stay at the Phillips again! It really is a lovely hotel.

A welcome change from bland chain hotels.

This is a very nice boutique-type downtown hotel with charm, good service, and smartly appointed rooms done in a stylish art-deco style. The unusual fountain-like faucets are a treat, and the beds very comfortable. The restaurant is expensive, but the bar area has a reasonably-priced menu and often has live entertainment. A very pleasant stay.

An exceptional experience!

My family stayed at Hotel Phillips while attending the National FWB Convention. This was a very nice hotel, although some amentities were limited. We had the "best" service we have had in any city we have been to the past dozen years. The staff was very courteous and friendly - always!!

Beautiful Building, Terrible Service

from A TripAdvisor Member
Though the building is indeed beautiful and the room was nice, the overall experience was very disappointing starting with misinformation from the hotel's cocierge about getting a shuttle to from the airport to the hotel causing me to spend an hour waiting in the hot sun at the airport for no good reason.

Despite what the Phillips website leads you to believe, the shuttle service is not included with your reservation.

Upon check-in I was given the key to the wrong room.

When got into the correct room I ordered room service I was delivered a 'grilled chicken wrap' that had obviously been stored in the refridgerator for serveral hours if not overnight. For this meal which I would not have bough from 711 for $1.50 I was charged $8 + $3 deliver charge + tax + 18% gratuity whether I liked the service or not.

I also found the door handle to the bathroom to be covered with some kind of smut which I cleaned off myself using the hotel towel.

The telephone did not work properly and one of the lamps was broken.

The next morning I went to use the business center and found that the internet connection did not work.

When I returned to my room late that afternoon looking forward to cool down from the summer heat and humidity, I found that heat in my room had been turned on making my room actually hotter than it was outside!

That night I had difficulty sleeping because the air condition was so loud, but it was too hot to sleep without it turned on.

When I went to fill out the comment card left in my room, I found that there was no pen to use when filling it out.

The neat looking water faucets and pretty lobby do not make up for miserable food and service at any price.

This hotel is beautiful, the rooms are huge. We stayed in the Executive Suite, you cannot hear any noises from other rooms, the bathroom shower never runs out of hot water. The only downside is the parking. But we found that if you park after 530pm, there is a parking garage for 2 dollars, if your out by 8am. They watch your car all night long. They should also put on their info page that if you walk a couple a blocks to the City center there is a food court, Starbucks coffee etc. It closes at 6pm but it would of been nice to know anyway.

Parking Not Disclosed!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Parking is an additional $13+ USD per night's stay!! When I asked the concierge about this and why it wasn't disclosed upon reservation of the room he said "this is downtown Kansas City - everyone knows you have to pay for parking when your in downtown Kansas City!" Hello...everyone has a downtown (YOUR CITY HERE) and we have found more often than not these "downtown"locations absorb the parking costs to keep customers! At the very least it is disclosed/posted upon reserving the room or posted at the valet service. We could have parked a block away for 1/2 that! The concierge wouldn't even split the cost when I offered. Don't bother spending the additional $15per night upgrading - it's not worth it (funny how they disclosed that amount when asking us if we wanted to upgrade...). It was a nice hotel, minus the management staff, but we won't be back.

We loved the Phillips! It's a beautiful old hotel that has been completely rehabbed. Because of its downtown location, where there is little open on the weekends, I would only recommend this hotel for weekend stay if you have a car. Was able to get a great price through Priceline.

Top Local Tips for Kansas City

Great breakfast spot Mama's Bell is a great place for breakfast with an amazing menu. It's small and may get crowded at peak hours but worth a wait.

Downtown There are a lot of little places downtown that are not advertised, check these out before you go. It is worth the research.

KC BBQ We went to Fiorella's Jack Stack (Freighthouse) and Arthur Bryants (Brooklyn Ave), both were very good and within easy reach of the hotel by car/cab. Fiorella's can get pricey and is a true sit down restaurant. Arthur Bryant's is very basic service line style, but boy are they affordable and very authentic!
