A nice place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We only stayed one night at the Inn on Lake Superior, but it was a great hotel with lots of things to do. Free lemonade and hot chocolate all day. In the morning, it was so nice just to walk downstairs and have a grand breakfast just waiting. The only concerns that I had were the size of the rooftop pool (very small, more of a cold whirlpool) and the amount of people staying there at that time of year (July)(it was booked solid). Even though these two things bothered me, it would not stop me from recommending this hotel to anyone who was going to stay in Duluth.

Awesome place to stay!

This inn is the best place to stay! We're going back this month again! We try to go every year and it's my favorite place on earth to vacation! The staff is awesome! So helpful! They really care about you! The breakfast is the best anywhere! They have a huge spread! Something for everyone! The S'Mores at night are extra special! We just love to stay here! They really go the extra mile and think of everything and more!!! It's so close to the lake and the boardwalk is right there! Super location! Get a lake view room! My parents and now all of their friends spend a lot of vacation days here each year and love it! Now I'm bringing some friends of mine...we've NEVER had a bad experience here! This place is awesome!!!!! It's really the ONLY place to stay when you're in Duluth! Happy traveling!

My all-time fave hotel!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have visited this hotel my entire life, and my favorite! It has very, very nice ambience, very welcome! We visit there at least twice a year, and not once have we been disappointed with service, or anything else. I must say the pricing may be a little on the high side, but it is most definetly worth it! The rooms seem to always be clean, the theme in the rooms is wilderness/lake superior. Very nice. I have never been disturbed by the maid service early in the morning like other hotels if I had a privacy please sign up, they supply your refridgeraters with pop and bottled water. ( A very nice plus) At night, it tends to USUALLY be quiet, with the exception of a occasional wild child running through the hall. THIS IS A WONDERFUL FAMILY HOTEL! This is the ONLY hotel my family will go to in Duluth, and gives us a very warm, welcome feeling.

I advise you go out and roast smores they have usually every night. All of the supplies for deluxe smore making is in the dining area, with a door going outside. They have a gas roaster, and it is just a magnificent view of Lake Superior out there while you roast the smores.
It is especially interesting if some of the white caps come by! :)
The dining room always has hot chocolate and coffee machines all night long, you can rent board games for the family, it has a nice pool, spa and sauna, and in the summer, they have bicycles you can rent so you can bike along on the boardwalk and sidewalk by the lake!
It is very relaxing to go out in the night and see the big ships go in and out of the harbor by the lighthouse at night.
The continental breakfasts are one of the best! They have just delicious boiled eggs, warm flaky pastries, freshly made donuts, belgium waffles you can make, cereal, fresh fruit, and MORE!

~ And while you are visiting Duluth, some nice places to go include Gooseberry State park (bring the swimsuits, the kids would LOVE to swim in the falls!) Glensheen mansion, a beautiful mansion with interesting history. A murder took place there, but that is not what the mansion tour is about! The Imax and aquarium are good attractions, too the whole family will love!
And visit Enger Tower to see a nice view of Duluth.

Time to try a new place?

We've been staying here, exclusively, for 5-6 yrs when in Duluth. This visit was disappointing, as the bed was SOFT and uncomfortable (you could see it sag when no one was on it) and the blankets and bedspreads were showing wear (although clean) and getting thin/washed out. Breakfast was busy (as usual) and there were not enough waffle machines (15 min. wait). Staff was less accomodating/friendly in the past. Also, outdoor pool (advertised open year round) has been closed our last 3 visits.

re in the Army

from 1127sg
Well, I thought I had reserved a room at the Inn on the Lake. When my party arrived, we were told the room at this hotel had been moved to the Best Western Edgewater Inn a mile away and not on the water. WHAT? It seems the Army had been staying in the hotel in a block of rooms and they were supposed to leave that day. They decided to stay longer, therefore, many people, including my party, were given the boot. Feeling somewhat hand-tied, my party left and went to the other hotel. The Inn on the Lake hotel is on the water, near the shops, has balconies and a free breakfast. None of these things were available at the other hotel. Take my advice--call first and find out if your reservation is valid. Make them verify you won't be switched to a different hotel.

Family Friendly

Very family friendly. Casual atmosphere. Love the bonfires and the outdoor pool. Staff was friendly and the rooms were clean.

Consistently Wonderful!

from susersid
We go to Duluth for 2-day get-a-ways because it is a short drive from Brainerd and there is always something to do for everyone. We have stayed at many hotels and thought the Holiday Inn was the best until we stayed at The Inn. The service, breakfast, smores, and the rooms are always outstanding. To avoid the usual weekend crowds we go during the week. The pace is slower, the pools are usually empty and even the shops and restaurants are less crowded. When I called today the phone was answered with, "We wish you were here at the Inn on Lake Superior." I wish I was, too!

Great Breakfast!

from JM27
Great service, clean, spacious rooms. Superb breakfast with great selection. A lot of nice touches in the rooms such as microwave and upscale soaps. Definitely a great stay for families. Wouldn't recommend it for romantic getaways, though. Also, parking space is at a premium, especially on Saturday nights.

Decent hotel, Great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here with a friend of mine and his family. The hotel rooms were clean and comfortable. My friends family felt that it wasn't worth what they paid, but they didn't seem to realize that they are paying for the location, not necessarily the accomodations. We had a great view of the lake from our rooms with private balconies. I don't really see how you could complain about the price of a room when you have a priceless view. Duluth is heaven on Earth and I plan to live there someday. My favorite part of the hotel was the heated pool on the roof.
The night that we were there was a cold spring evening, so it was really neat to sit in the pool and gaze at the top of the lift bridge, which is beautiful at night. In summary, better than average hotel with a great location near many shops, restaraunts, and of course canal park.

Top Local Tips for Duluth

Be Prepared! Do bring along warm clothes. One summer when we stayed in Canal Park, we were informed it was one of the coldes summers on record. ( We stayed the first week in August.)

Weather For anyone who has not been to Duluth, weather depends on the lake (similar to Chicago, but more volatile). If the wind is coming off the lake, it stays cool and cloudy. If it's coming off land, it gets warmer. As such, seasons tend to linger longer.

Angie's Cantina Go to Angies Cantina (right across the street from the Inn on Lake Superior). Around 7 pm street performers start their acts in front of this establishment. If you can snag a pation/deck table you can watch. The first night we were there, their was a street magician that the all the kids (young and old) loved. The second night we were there, a live reggae band performed. FUN. Oh- and you HAVE to try the "original" margarita: very good.
