NIce waterpark, ok hotel stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We went as a family with our 2 kids, ages 1 and 3 1/2. They had a fun time, however I was disappointed with a few things.
We were going to pay $170 for a 2 bed room with lakeview, then they had a weekend special for $120 so we did get that rate. However, we had an old room, very small and old. Definitely not worth the $170, but okay, I guess, since we the $120 rate included the waterpark.
Our room was very hard to get to if you need to use elevators with a stroller and luggage cart. What a hassle!
The free internet service also did not work. Our breakfast was good, however, a worker swore in front of my 3 1/2 year old daughter, NOT impressive.
The waterpark is small compared to WI Dells, but clean and very warm water. That's very nice. The lazy river, basketball, vortex and rope/island pool were a big hit with my 3 1/2 year old since the kiddie pool was shut down for the entire Sat. evening because a child had an accident in the pool. That was terrible when that's where my children can play! They are not very consistent with the rules, sometimes my daughter was able to go down the slide and others wouldn't let her because her swimsuit had the flotation pads in it. Not sure about all of that! That was when the kiddie area was shut down, so where else was she supposed to have fun??
They did refund us $25 for all of this. I usually don't have any complaints, but all of these things added up. We'll probably go back and try it again, now we know what kind of room to request.

Just right for family with 2 and 4 year olds

My wife and 2 boys (ages 2 and 4) stayed here mid-week in late January and I have to say that it was a great stay. We got a great mid-week 89 dollar nightly rate and that included the brand-spanking new waterpark, a 2-room suite in the new wing overlooking the lake, breakfast and 2-drinks per adult each night. Not a bad deal!

We have been to the Wisconsin Dells, and you often have to walk for 10-15 minutes through corridors to get to their indoor waterparks. Here, the park is a mere minute or two from all the rooms in the new wing and it is quite the waterpark. We talked to the aquatics director and she noted that it was designed primarily for the 10 & under set. They even provide mini-life vests for the kids. I'd agree - most of the water features are small-kid friendly with the exception of the two waterslides that start from a platform high above the lazy river.

The water features are plentiful, and the entire waterpark complex was very toasty warm - both the air and the water. I've been to others where is just wasn't warm enough - and that's critical for a two year old. There is a whirlpool - literally a round pool that whirls kids around the outer edge with a strong current of water. There's also a floating island pool where the kids use monkey bars while stepping from island to island. In the big dump-bucket area, there are lots of little slides, mini water cannons and of course the giant 200+ gallon dump bucket that flips in it's side every 5-10 minutes or so. There is also the requisite hot tub/whirlpool that was the perfect spot to warm up before heading back to your room. The lazy river was nice, not too long and not too speedy for the little ones. The slides were great - they are very fast and loop outside the building, though you wouldn't know it since you are in the enclosed, dark tube most of the time. One is just a body slide and the other is a tube slide.

The rest of the service was fine -- free breakfast was cereal, toast, yogurt, juices, muffins and the like. No make your own waffle station - which would be a nice addition. And in that same breakfast area, which overlooks the waterpark, they also serve the 2-drinks per adult we took advantage of each night (we ordered in dinner one night from an Italian restaurant in downtown Duluth) and went to Perkins (right across the parking lot) the other night. There is a Dunn Brothers coffee shop right across the street for the Caribou/Starbucks crowd so you can get your morning fix.

We liked the suite room - it was new - solid granite in the bathroom shower and in the outer vanity area that separated the two rooms (yes with a door). One room next to the balcony overlooking the lake had the two queen sized beds - nice linens - a big step up from the average you find in less expensive hotels. The other room had the king sized bed with something like 5 pillows. Toiletries were also of a nice calibre - French or English if my memory serves me correctly. These are the little things that add up to a step above average experience.

Since the waterpark doesn't open until 2p (at least while we were there), we spent one morning at the very well designed aquarium near Canal Park and the next morning at the Depot train and children's museum. Both quite worthwhile and perfect for our kids. That later opening of the waterpark also meant that we weren't at the park in the morning, afternoon and evening and looking like exhausted prunes at the end of the day.

Overall, we were quite pleased with the room, the amenities and service, and especially the waterpark. It will probably get crowded on weekends, but boy, during the week it was perfect. Enjoy.

Good deal if booked on priceline. Manager says they are making improvements.

The hotel was under construction when we came and quite noisy. They also advertised the water park that wasn't open yet. However the staff was friendly and the rooms appeared to be fairly clean. The amenities were in good condition despite their age.

Amazing Water Park

from A TripAdvisor Member
To fight a nasty case of cabin fever, my 5 yr. old daughter & I went to the Edgewater in Duluth over the Martin Luther King holiday week-end. The new water park is now open and it is absolutely mind-blowing. It is like a fantasy of a water park brought to life: it has a "lazy river" ride, a vortex pool, a modern shiny playground with water spraying all over it that the kids can control, huge, scary water slides, and a volcano. What a blast. 5 yr. old was blown away & spent 3 hours running nuts while I followed along. Our value was great (less than $60), though unfortunately, we were stuck in the old hotel across the street from the water park. It's worth spending a few more bucks to be on the other side of the road. It completely cured the cabin fever. We will definitely be going back. Highly recommended. The room was a little dingy (old worn out carpet), so it gets 4 & not 5 dots, but a small price to pay.

Never Again

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our family spent 2 nights at the Edgewater in Jan 2006. This was our first and last visit.

The checkin was extremely slow. It appears this hotel has been renovated a few times over the years, however, not a very good job was done. The newer section of the hotel appears much nicer than the old wing we stayed in.

The rooms were dirty and dingy. The walls and carpet were filthy. Even our shower curtain was 3 inches short which caused the bathroom floor to become soaked and slippery.

The kids did enjoy the water park. The 2 slides were quite cool. The huge 'hot' tub was more of a luke warm tub.

One warning. The hotel has a completely separate building across the parking lot and busy street. This building is not connected to the main hotel or water park. If you are planning on using the water park make sure you are in the main part of the hotel.

Enjoyed the Eastwater Hotel

from garycvh
My family and I stayed at the Edgewater East Sept. 3 -5, 2005. It has been a few years since we stayed at the Edgewater. They are in the process of building a indoor waterpark, so there was a lot construction.

For the most part we enjoyed are stay. The room was clean. We stayed on the second floor and our room door opened directly to the outside walkway. The free continental breaKfast "plus" was good and my girls liked. The managers evening happy hour was also good. The one thing they did advertise was the new heated outdoor pool. It was not very warm. The outside hot tub was very enjoyable right next to the outside pool. In the evenings they a gas campfire and provided marshmellows and roasting sticks. That was enjoyable and relaxing.

We would stay there again.

We come here every year

Yes, the balcony views overlook the freeway, but we have never found that noisy or distracting--Duluth is hardly a major metropolis. The views from the newer part of the hotel with balconies are absolutely stunning. Duluth is not full of brand new ritzy hotels--it is a college town and it is an industrial town--and although it is also a tourist town it does not have a resort atmosphere--it's a feeling of getting away from big cities and just enjoying some awesome scenary. We have stayed at 5 different hotels in Duluth, and this one has the most spacious rooms, largest bathrooms, and is a good place to stay with families. It is clean and doesn't have the moldy smell that some of the older hotels have in the area. My one concern about this hotel, is that it's going through major renovation and is now billing itself as "The Edge" which makes me think it is trying to attract a younger, more party type crowd. On it's new logo, it has pictures of Palm Trees, of all things. Also, while we there, at about 8:30 in the morning the construction started up again--luckily we were already awake--but it does look like there will be major work going on for some time as the hotel is building a new waterpark. We've never stayed in the older part of the hotel. That section used to have outside access to all the rooms and it looks like they're building an enclosure around the building, so that it is no longer outside access but has hallways instead which I think is a positive change.

Average at Best

I was disappointed with the Best Western Edgewater. The hotel advertises itself as a "hotel/waterpark," but the waterpark does not open until sometime in the winter of 2005. I felt this was deceptive on the hotel's part and my kids were disappointed.

The parking lot was torn up because of the waterpark construction and the spots fill up fast. I ended up parking a long way away on both nights.

Our "lakeside room with balcony" overlooked the freeway with the lake off in the distance. The balconies themselves are shared with the adjoining rooms, separated by a small railing. It was okay, but not very private, especially if your neighbors are the partying type. A partition would have made it a little nicer, although there is nothing they can do about the roar of the freeway traffic.

The hotel is located north of town and is a long way away from Canal Park. Bicycles were available, along with a shuttle bus, but we ended up driving.

The hallways and lobby were hot, smelly, and kind of run down and it took a while to check in.

The staff was friendly and polite and the room was reasonably clean.

The breakfast was nothing special with cereal, muffins, and some of the worst coffee I've ever had. Time for an upgrade, Best Western.

We usually stay at the Inn on Lake Superior in Canal Park, which is much nicer and better located, but their prices are ridiculous. The Inn had only one room available -- a smoking room with one bed for $225 a night and this was on a Monday. Crazy.

We paid $110 per night for the Edgewater. Once the waterpark is completed I imagine the hotel will be able to charge more and maybe give the place a badly needed makeover.

The Edgewater isn't bad if you are on a budget and don't mind the location, but it's certainly not a destination hotel.

Balcony Over the Freeway

from A TripAdvisor Member
I read all these glowing reviews of this place and thought it sounded really nice. So I paid extra for a room with a lake view balcony. The balcony did have a view of the lake but it also had the freeway right underneath it so you wouldn't want to sit on the balcony or even leave the door to the balcony open. In fact the freeway was loud in the room with the door closed.

Also, when I got to the front desk they couldn't find my reservation because somehow they'd misspelled my name, even though it was spelled right on my confirmation. Fortunately I had the confirmation with me so they managed to find it.

3 Star lodging

from Dudee
Resort is divided into 2 sections; near the shore of Lake Superior and across the street. While we were located in a room across the street, it was okay. Room was average size but seemed small with 3 people in it. Water park is not yet open (Jan, 2006). Indoor poor was clean and well maintained. Continental breakfast was the usual plus some hard boiled eggs for protein. All in all, not a bad experience. The resort, though, lacks charm. I was told you can see the Aerial Lift Bridge from the resort but it is far away view.
