Top Local Tips for Traverse City

Go through the parking lots Route 31 can be a challenge to drive. The parking lots in hotel area tend to be interconnected - one can even get to Airport Road by going around enough lots.

Seek out surrounding areas If you are going to Traverse City (I am originally from there) please take the time to not only enjoy the beautiful beaches but also take a drive into the other counties. Beautiful Lake Leelanau and go out all the way to the Light House on the Penninsula and check out the Boardman River. You will see some of the most beautiful areas and the cute small town places to eat that have great food (bring cash, they don't like credit cards in some small places) and for sure check out the out of the way shops. Just remember you are a visitor and the people who will be of service to you are year around residents and they appreciate being treated with respect. If you arrive during Cherry season, try picking your own cherries at one of the orchards that allow you to pick your own. That is the way we used to make money to go to the fair by the way. Be sure to check out the Sand Dunes in Empire if you have kids. They will love to climb on the samd.

Dining and coffee downtown Traverse City Espresso Bay coffee shop downtown has very good coffee and gelato, and it offers free wireless internet to its customers. Mackinaw Brewing Company, just across the street from Espresso Bay, has very good specialty beers and excellent food.
