Pretty Good

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at this Westin for one night and I really didn't have many problems with it. The location is convenient being close to the interstate. The rooms were well appointed, clean, and spacious. The dual head showers were a nice touch. I checked in at 11:30 PM and the front desk staff were very friendly and quick to process my reservation. The weight room and pool were small but had enough equiptment including free weights. The only negative thing was the man in the gift shop was quite rude when I asked for change. But all in all, I had a good experience and would stay here again.

Rooms at Westin below average

Stayed at the Westin Southfield over 4th of July weekend. Hotel did not meet the standards that my husband and I are used to from a Westin. The room, though spacious, was in terrible repair. I had read that this hotel had been completely renovated in 2000. Well, it looks pretty bad after just 5 years. The carpet in our room was full of stains and burn holes, the tile in the bathroom was moldy. Front desk staff, although not rude, was not overly friendly or welcoming.

A pleasant comfortable stay

from Lanai
I stayed with my family a few days before Memorial Day. I booked 2 DBL/DBL rooms for $109/nt/rm directly on their website. Check in was reasonably smooth. Both rooms were spacious, clean, modern and comfortable. There was really nothing to complain about. Heavenly bed, power shower, etc. Called housekeeping for a few extra towels and got an arm load delivered within 10 minutes. All the front desk staff and bellmen were friendly. James was a real gem; he gave great directions and suggestions about places to eat and last minute shopping. The hotel was busy during the week with business travellers and again over the weekend with weddings and reunions. We had dinner at Tango the first night, it was just OK. The server was a little slow in refilling our drinks. I had no problems parking in the free garage; always found a spot near the walkway into the hotel. I used the elliptical and free weights in the gym every other day. Good facilities and the pool looked inviting. I was slightly bothered by not being able to hear the TV without their special head phones. I wouldn't hesitate to book here again.

Wedding Disaster

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I had the WORST experience here, and sadly it was our wedding. We were lied to by the staff of this hotel. When we booked our reception here we were mostly impressed with the decor of the hotel. It was beautiful. Upon stepping into the lobby the week prior to our wedding day for an appointment, we discoverd that it was a disaster. The lobby was a construction zone with dirt, sawdust, workers, tools, etc. everywhere. This was a total nightmare for our wedding photos, a hazard to our guests, and most importantly not brought to our attention until we walked in and experienced it for ourselves. I cannot express to you the anger and absolute disappointment we both felt. Had we been made aware that the hotel was going to undergo construction, we would have booked somewhere else. Nobody told us about this. In addition to the construction, we had a large amount of gifts, guests purses, and personal belongings stolen from our ballroom as well as hotel rooms. The hotel refuses to compensate for this matter and is now being investigated by the Attorney General of Michigan. Please do yourself a favor and find another reception site. There are much more beautiful and safe locations. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. I hope my story can prevent others from such a terrible and, unfortunately memorable, situation.

Nothing wrong with this Hotel

We thoght that the Westin in Southfield was very nice. We travel alot and frequent mostly Starwood facilities. I swim everyday and found the pool at this hotel to be one of the cleanest I have used. It was very well maintained. Our room was clean and the only fault that I can write about would be that our room was not made up after being gone from 8:30a.m. to 2p.m. on a Saturday. It was promptly made up after we called the front desk.

Pleasant experience

I was fortunate to book this hotel on a last-minute Priceline bid in December. No, this is not the most modern or luxurious Westin I've ever stayed in, but considering the price I paid, I was very satisfied with my stay. Free parking was plentiful (in a covered garage attached to the hotel), and when I arrived on a weekend evening, check-in was swift and courteous. The room was clean, comfortable, and attractive, with the advertised Heavenly Bed. The biggest advantage for me was the hotel's location, literally minutes from my destination in Royal Oak. I wouldn't pay rack rate for this room but, if in the Detroit area again, would be pleased to stay here for a reduced rate.

Great for Detroit, just get a good price

For the Detroit area, this Westin stacks up well against the local competition. I found the staff to be VERY attentive, friendly, and happy to be there. The rooms were a standard Westin room, with heavenly bed, and more modern decor. The bathroom was a little dated, but still clean. The only drawback is the overpriced room rate. (which seems to be typical among Westin's) Even with my corporate discount, I paid $179.00 for the room through the starwood website.

Just fine.....

I ended up with the room for $79 through Hotwire and was terrified after reading the reviews here. I was pleasantly surprised when I got there, though. The hotel is in an office park with lots of free parking (stark contrast to the Chicago Westin where we stayed the night before). The lobby/elevators/etc arent incredible but were just fine, and the room was just as nice as the Chicago Westin. We were completely satisfied with the whole experience from beginning to end (outside of their nerve to charge $2 for a toll-free call).

My wife and I had went down to southfield for a weekend get away, and that's what we had to do, was get away from the westin. We don't mind spending a little more for a room if it's nice but the room we had reserved at the hotel had been a jacuzzi suite room for $375. and when we got there we had to wait 35 min. just to check into the room, second when we finally got to go to the room, (wow) this was the worst room I have ever been in, and trust me i've been in alot (I travel around the world on business). The wallpaper was coming off of the walls and in alot of spots, the carpets had alot of rips in it, the bathroom was the worst, used toiletpaper in the trash and hair on the floor of the shower. The jacuzzi in the middle of the room I wouldn't have my worst enemy soak in that, and my rating outta 10 would have to be a -10, so please take my advise and "RUN", now we left there and checked into the "ATHENEUM" in downtown detroit and we were blown away, one of the best hotels I had ever been in and it cost less.

Extended Stay? Stay Away!

I stayed on business at the Westin Southfield over the course of a month. I was warned by co-workers that this hotel is horrible. However, since my job required me to be in the attached office complex, I decided to give it a try anyway. First impression, all in all not too bad. Hotel looked clean, staff was polite enough, no problems, attractive modern room, great bed, nice workout facility, etc. That was it, downhill from there. Aside from many nuissances with check-in:

Week #2 brought a broken office chair (broken to the point that when you sat on it you fell to the floor, no I'm not exaggerating, literally on your keister). They did not swap it out for two days!

Week #3 I was awaken in the middle of the night by a dripping sound. Turned out my bathroom leaked all over and part of my room flooded. No help from maintenance.

Week #4 I came back from a long day of work, dreaming about my heavenly bed. Get in the bed, only to find a hair extension end up on my arm...GROSS!

I am a discriminating consumer, but I am by all means flexible and understand that everything can't be 100% perfect all the time. 3 out of 4 is pretty bad though! My last week, the front desk manager did leave a big bag of goodies for me and a personally written apology card (She was great). All-in-all I would not return here for any type of extended stay. If you need to be in the area for a day or two, take your chances for the convenience. Otherwise, GO ELSEWHERE! If I ever come back to Detroit, I will gladly suffer through rush hour.

Try Bacco restaurant on route 10. It's the best Italian food in the area, if a bit pricy.
