Elegance in Grand Rapids
from jsterben
Stayed here for three nights in October 2005 while on business. The room was otherwise unimpressive (and links to the infamous Amway sales company (now also knows as Quixtar) were evident in a number of places), but the public areas of the hotel were very nicely done, especially in the Pantlind (older) section of the hotel. The most impressive element of the hotel--BY FAR (and most of the reason I'm giving it an "Excellent" rating)--is the staff. There might be an occasional staff person in any given property that stands out during my stay, but here, they were all extraordinarily outstanding, from the desk clerks to the housekeepers and bellmen. I have never seen such a high level of customer service orientation across all levels of staff in all my (somewhat) varied travels. Outside the employee entrance is a sign: "Through these doors walk the world's best employees" (or something very similar)--I believe that, and clearly, the employees do as well. The several on-property dining options had a very nice variety and were all very good. Many services and facilities, while available, incurred additional charges. A fantastic downtown location--attached to the De Vos complex and Van Andel Arena via skywalks--adds to the reasons to consider staying here. I would stay at this hotel again.
Great experience visiting our son
from retiredin2003
My husband and I visited our adult son who lives only 1 mile from the Amway in March of 2006. We had a great experience and will return soon. Our experience was near perfect--only complaint was the parking fee of $15.00 per day to park our car in the garage. Our room was on the 5th floor in the older section but our room and bathroom was very newly redecorated. Our maid kept our room spotless and turned down our bed around 9pm just like on a cruise ship. All staff were friendly and helpful.
Five Star Service

The Amway Grand Plaza is hands-down the best hotel I have ever stayed in. The receptionist recommended a room on the Concierge Level, and it was spectacular! We had a corner room, all windows, and we could see the entire city. There's a private lounge on the top floor with a cocktail hour and fabulous continental breakfast (not just a donut and coffee!) The Concierge gave us great suggestions for night life and even made a reservation for dinner for us--very personalized service! We ate at the 1913 Room in the hotel, and there were three servers just for us! By far the best food and dining experience we have ever had. This hotel ranks with some of the finest in the world. A true Grand Rapids treasure! Stay on the Concierge Level and spoil yourself--it's worth it!
Great Experience

It is interesting to see the negative comments on here. I had an excellent time during my stay. I was at a convention, which is in a gorgeous convention center. I believe it is the most convenient hotel to the convention center, but the walk seems to take forever. At least it wasn't outside.
I was lucky enough to stay in the older (I like to think historic) section. I was upgraded to a junior suite which was located on the corner. This room was absolutely amazing and huge, especially since it was just myself in the room. If you can get one of these rooms and you enjoy older hotels, I highly recommend it.
Pros:
My suite and its roominess, turndown service, affordability and great breakfast room service, location, proximity to convention center, beautiful lobby.
Cons:
Noise from my adjoining room neighbor and from a bar outside and across the street.
If you are in Grand Rapids, be sure to visit the Frederik Meijer Gardens. It was spectacular in February and I am sure it is great in the summer too.
An overall above average experience.

OK, but Oriented to Business Travelers
from WEWITKOW
The Amway Grand is a typical large city hotel. I stayed in the tower and the room was a bit cramped and stale. I expected a better experience given the price, and the advertising as a four star hotel. So overall a decent place for a business traveler, but lacking for a vacation traveler.
Thumbs Up for Customer Service

My business and personal travels have taken me to many hotels around the country, but this hotel provided me with the best housekeeping service I have ever experienced. Never before have I been compelled to tip my maid. She was courteous and caring, and kept the room in sparkling condition each day of my 4 day stay.
Every staff member of the hotel was a top-notch professional including each of the wait staff in the various restaurants I went to. The front desk crew and the bellmen were great, too. The great service received by all these people made for a favorably memorable stay.
Other reviewers have mentioned the great rooms and incredible views. Yep, they are all correct. Rooms in the tower are spacious and my riverfront view (w/a view of the Ford Presidential Museum) was nice. Although I don't drink coffee, several of my business colleagues wished their rooms had coffeemakers in them. I was hoping for HBO or other significant movie channel, but none was available. Pay-per-view is available.
I would give the Amway 5 stars however the following items lowered my score to a 4: express check out was problemmatic--although I could check out from my room's TV, I still had to stand in line at the desk to receive a printout of my bill. My bathroom did not have a bathtub, but rather had a shower stall. No coffeemaker (as noted above). Room service indicated my dinner would arrive in 30 minutes and it took 45 minutes. Room service did call, however, to apologize for the delay. The hotel's least expensive coffee shop called Cornucopia was open for breakfast and lunch hours only. The only options remaining were pricey and time intensive (but really delicious).
As an aside, the DeVos Convention Center is a good place for large conventions. It's walkable by skyways and hallways. The Ford Presidential Museum is a well done museum highlighting former President Ford's life and time as Vice President and President. A meaningful segment of the museum is also dedicated to his wife Betty Ford. It takes 5 minutes to walk there, 5 dollars to get in, and about 2 hours to take in the majority of the museum.

Could have been great

This hotel has beautiful common areas, restaurants, and stores. We stayed in the tower. Had a large well-appointed room with gorgeous view. No HBO or other movie channel - just pay-per-view. The bathroom looked a bit dated - could use a remodel in my view. The location is very good, in the heart of Grand Rapids. We used self-park, which was more convenient than many city hotels I've tried.
Some negatives:
We stayed here for the Grand Rapids Marathon. They refused to give me a checkout later than 2pm, even though others got 4pm, and I was told on the phone I should be able to get one when I registered. Wouldn't even give me 3pm. An extra hour wouldn't have hurt them, but made a big difference to me after running 26 miles! Note that the marathon advertised for the hotel on their website, so I expected better treatment.
There is a fairly nice swimming pool, exercise room and tennis court. There are two hot tubs. One was out of order, the other was small and not very hot.
Our room had a partially-clogged sink and bathtub. I couldn't take a bath due to the hair and dirt that floated up when I ran the water.
I told the receptionist I was disappointed when I checked-out. She offered me the opportunity of filling out a comment card which sounded like useless work for me. If this is the best she can do, I'd rather share such comments with others like you! I expected better considering the ratings of this hotel.

A truly Grand hotel
from SusanVM
We came to Grand Rapids primarily because my husband and I enjoy visiting presidential museums and were so happy to find such a wonderful hotel just right across the river and a footbridge from Gerald Ford's museum. We stayed in the new section on a high floor in a corner room which gave us a beautiful view over the river. We kept our curtains open all night as it was such a lovely view. We stayed in the new section of the hotel and I am not sure how the rooms are in the older section but the old lobby is very beautiful as we walked through it to go to the 1913 Room restaurant which I would also highly recommend. The staff was all very friendly and courteous. We felt like our waitress in the casual breakfast restaurant was our best friend by the time we left. The car valet person was almost like a "parent" in making sure we knew the directions on how to go where we wanted to go when we left the hotel.....very nice. Be sure to ask for that corner room!

My wife grew up in Grand Rapids and when she was younger always dreamed of staying at the Amway Grand Hotel. Her wish came true when we drove to Grand Rapids for my wife's 20th high school reunion.
I must tell you that the thing I enjoyed the best about the hotel was not the beautiful room that we had on the 19th floor which was a corner room. It was the way that we were treated by every individual employee that worked there.
From the valet, to the front desk, to the housecleaners, we were treated with world class customer service. There is nothing more pleasant then seeing each worker take pride in their jobs and by doing so, it makes the consumer feel good that they made the right decision in choosing that hotel. UNBELIEVABLE customer service.
In regards to the actual hotel room. Very spacious, king size bed was very comfortable, however the tower room that we were in looked a little outdated, but the view was beautiful. I highly recommend this hotel!!!
