Nice place to be, but get ready to be Nickle and Dimed

from galileocan
This hotel really is a great place if you are on a layover at Detroit Airport. The hotel is right in the concourse and even has its own security personnel, so you can clear security without having to face the long lines elsewhere. The rooms are great with the super "heavenly bed" that Westin offers. The food is excellent and the meeting rooms are very good. The downside is that the staff (especially the front desk) tend to be brisk, and borderline rude. The other negative is that the hotel nickle and dimes the customer to death. $16 for internet access - a bit high, plus $2.50 for a local phone call! Ridiculous. As well, after a certain period of time you start getting dinged .10/minute, even after paying $2.50 for a local phone call. I ended up going downstairs and using a payphone rather than pay what they wanted for a local call. The hotel unfortunately is using their convenience to squeeze more money out of its patrons in the form of local calls and internet access, etc. While the food is good, it certainly is overpriced (as is everything at the hotel).

Westin Made Early Morning Traveling Much Easier

from ArizonaBeachlover
Wow! Lovely property and LOVED the heavenly bed and bath. The rooms are nicely appointed with the lastest furnishings and sparkling clean. So quiet it is hard to believe the hotel is next to a runway.
We were met on the door promptly by a greeter that quickly secured a bell hop for our bags. The bell hop was very polite along with the front desk staff. We enjoyed an evening cocktail in the beautiful lobby restrauant along with an amazing desert. Despite all the creature comforts of the hotel the best part was the ease it offered when flying Northwest. This is the place to stay if you have a morning flight out of the new terminal at Detroit Metro.

Great Price.... Great Hotel

My kids were flying out to San Diego early in the morning so I booked online a few weeks ahead for 2 doubles. The room rate for 2 rooms was an incredible $80.00 per night per room. There is no refund on these kinds of reservations. The rooms were first class and the beds were extremely comfortable. We ate in the beautiful Atrium Restaurant and got out of there stuffed for $100.00 for the 4 of us. The atrium lobby is a wonder in itself!

If you can, check your bags and get your boarding pass early, then return to the hotel until it is flight time and you can go through the special check in gate just off the hotel lobby. They are just as meticulous, (my son had to take off his shoes), but there are no crowded line ups and it was a no pressure deal.

One important point about price: Even if it is from your laptop in the Airport, book online and the deals are much much better. Walking up to the front desk without a reservation can be expensive. You will not be disappointed!

Impressive Airport Hotel

I stay in 35 or more upscale hotels a year. I found the Westin DTW to be outstanding. My room was stylish and richly appointed. Food was excellent and the presentation A+. The Front Desk was polite and responsive, although there appeared to be no expedited check-in (only the sign was there) or recognition for an SPG Elite member. Clearly, it is the most convenient option for air travellers who must overnight, but it is much, much more than your typical "airport" hotel.

My accommodations during my most recent stay in Detroit were so absolutely horrible, I felt it necessarry to write a review, even though I typically don't voice my opinion.

I arrived at the Airport Westin only to find a very rude staff instruct me that there weren't any rooms available at the present time. IT WAS 7pm, and check-in was listed as 3pm. They informed me that a flight crew checked out about an hour ago, and that my room should be available soon. I finally got into my room at 8:15pm to find a Heavenly Bed (which was nice), which could barely fit in the room because of the size of the room. The room was very cold & blah! Furthermore, there is nothing to do anywhere around the hotel. YUCK!

I recommend staying elsewhere - I mean - anywhere else.

rude and unhelpful desk personnell Wed at 8 pm

My wife had just spent 8 hour of delays and fog and ice getting to Detroit. She had to stay overnight since she missed her connectioin. She was booked to fly at 7.04 in the Am. ergo she wanted to stay at the airport to make it easy in the Am. The desk clerk was too busy to help her. She was dressed in a sweater and jeans. However her appearance did not reveal our true financial status. Apparently the desk agent decided we could not afford his accommodtions and refused to acknowledge her. We certainly could aford your hotel but he chose to ignore her. It has been a number of years since my last visit to one of your hotels, but it will be much longer before I ever inquire.

If you're flying out of Detroit Metro (especially flights departing from the McNamara Terminal), the Westin Metro Airport is a no brainer. Not only do you get the quality you expect from a Westin property, you can also bypass long check in and security lines by using the hotel entrance to the terminal. Free shuttles are offered for passengers flying from the two other Detroit Metro terminals. While the rooms are small, they are very comfortable, nicely appointed and sparkling clean. Our room provided a view of the midfield terminal, and noise from aircraft could be compared to a low rumble of distant thunder. Since my wife and I usually take early morning flights, we will try to stay overnight at the Westin in the future and avoid the hassle of the unpredictable Detroit area traffic and weather.

Outstanding Hotel

Stayed at the Westin this past Friday night. Very good weekend rate booked at - $99.00.
The hotel sparkles, heavenly bed and bath are outstanding. Room service was a tad expensive, but not out of line. If arriving late or departing early I would certainly stay here again. Note - much better location for those traveling on Northwest - connected to their new terminal. We arrived Delta and had a 10 minute shuttle bus ride to the new terminal.

It boils down to cost.

The pluses and minuses are in a dead heat. It is convenient, but if you have a late check-in and are hungry, you are out of luck or at least I was. The kitchen closed at 10, no room service...nothing. I was advised to call and order a pizza and from what I was reading regarding the price of room service, probably a good idea.

The convenience is great... I was flying on NWA and the room (small) was very comfortable, loved it. I was looking into stay there again, but the best price I could find was Cheap Ticket's $189.00 every other travel site was quoting well over $200.00 per night. For $80.00 to possibly $120.00 I would stay there again, $200.00 is completely out of the question.

Stayed at the Westin Jan. 31, 2004 for one night. It was absolutely perfect. The price for the room was very reasonable. It added an extra day to my vaction rather than just a means of travel. If fact I am staying there again for another travel. You could not get any better.
Oh I do agree to eat there is a little expensive but the food is really good. So knowing that in advance I don't mind so much. Do highly recommend the Westin!

Top Local Tips for Detroit

Parking Park over in the $9.00 section and take the shuttle over to the hotel.

Don't waste your time One of the most uninviting places on earth to visit. Not a single thing in downtown worth looking at. Stop for fuel and move on is my suggestion.

Detroit Institute of Arts Fabulous museum with a wide ranging collection and lots of interactive exhibits great for all ages. Diego River mural alone worth the trip.
