Historical Traveller Reviews of Grand Traverse Resort and Spa Hotel
Way Overrated!
from Bulldawgs4
This was an overrated hotel. Yes the grounds are decent, along with the entrance to the hotel. It was nice having the shops at the resort, but the rooms themselves, were just rooms. Nothing special at all. The air conditioning in our room didn't work real well and with the weekend hot and stuffy it was needed. Certainly not worth the money!
Beautiful!

The resort is amazing! It is absolutely beautiful! I went there for a weekend and it completely lived up to my expectations. There are not many signs to find the place. Once you get to Traverse CIty, look for the big tower on the bay. The room-type we requested was not available, but the room we got was very nice. There is no guide in the room to tell you where things are located in the resort. The outdoor pool is very nice. There is poolside service with a full bar. The pool does not open until 10:00am. The jetski rental place was not renting, because they said the waves were too big (there weren't any waves). We just went down the road to another place that was renting them. The breakfast that was included in our stay was very good. It includes a full buffet. The spa is also very nice. The entire resort staff is very helpful and friendly. I would defintely go back!
not worth the money

Stayed in the Tower during the Cherry Festival and was not impressed at all. When we first arrived we smelled smoke in our room and it was coming from the room next door. We were moved to another floor and it was much better. The rooms are newly decorated, but nothing special. Cheap blankets (one with holes in it) and worn sheets were on the bed. The beds are very soft and most people would probably really like them.
The bathroom was very nice and had a jacuzzi tub. The bath products were standard generic soaps and shampoos (for the price of the room and having a spa on the premise, I envisioned having some Aveda or other comparable products in the room...it would have been a nice touch, anyway).
The private beach was overcrowded (mostly teens and college students) and was small and not at all like what you would get at the other beach hotels in TC.
The pools are nice and there are drinks and food available at the outdoor pool, but no poolside service...at least, not at the outdoor pool at the hotel. I do not know if they have poolside service at the pool at the beach club.
Overpriced room service, overpriced breakfast, over priced rooms.
Tower the way to go
from biggfoot18
We just returned from a great weekend staying at the Grand Traverse Resort. We had a very enjoyable weekend at the hotel and visiting the nearby casino (Turtle Creek) as well as Traverse City. The resort accomodations seem to consist of an older 4 or 5 story hotel, rentable condos and the tower, a 17 floor glassed building that seems to jut out of nowhere in the fairly rurally located area. It seems almost out of place, however, the rooms are as nice as you will find most anywhere. I was told they just finished an extensive remodel and all the rooms had new bathrooms, bed, carpet and furniture. Like new inside--very classy. We had a king bed, pillow top with high thread count sheets and down pillows. It was very comfortable, on par with the Westin "heavenly" beds I have stayed on in the past. These are not the "small" hotel rooms that you sometimes get stuck in. There was a very large bath with jet tub, two comforatble easy chairs, lots of extra space, a desk, TV and bar area with storage and a fridge. All very nice. There is a restaurant and lounge on the 16th and 17th floor, but we never made it up there. Our room was on the 12th floor and had a beautiful view out the front of the hotel. The lobby area is large with a fountain, fireplace, bar, lots of seating all over, and a check-in area. There are shops located in the lobby level of the tower including a clothes, specialty foods, kids shop and a candy/sundries/ice cream joint (Starbucks coffee if you like that). There is also another sports bar and restaurant on the lobby level. The food at the main floor restaurant was servicable, but nothing to write home about. I had a club sandwhich which was adequate and be ate breakfast, which was so-so. I prefer Mabels about 5 miles toward TC for breakfast, that was great. I would definately stay here again as we had a lovely time and I highly recommend staying in the TOWER. I will not vouch for the hotel or condos.
Wonderful two day getaway!

My partner and I stayed here for two nights at the begining of october.
We had a tower room with a comfortable king bed and a nice jacuzzi with more than enough room for two people. The room was on the 15th floor and had spectacular views of the bay.
We made use of most of the facilities. Golf was fun and very inexpensive at this time of year. The spa was wonderful although it more expensive than other resorts I've stayed at. The indoor pool was impressive along with their many tennis courts.
The trillium restaurant was lovely. Room service very efficient. The Marketplace had great snacks and sandwhiches and also offered complimentary internet access.
I found the staff to be efficient and polite and were more than happy to answer our questions. On our first morning we left the room for breakfast at 10am and our room was made up by the time we returned at 11am.
It was a wonderful mini getaway and traverse city is beautiful at this time of year. I would highly recommend this resort and I will be returning.
good experience at the grand traverse

I just returned from two nights at the Grand Traverse. I was there for a conference and used most facilities. I was in room 630 in the hotel part and found it quite comfortable. Our room overlooked the golf course and also the bay. All staff were friendly and helpful as needed. The grounds were beautiful and were constantly being attended to. The indoor pool and hot tub were beautiful and hit the spot on a drizzly night. The air and heat worked well. There was a little trouble having enough hot water for a shower one evening. Beds were comfy. I did not eat there but had a great meal downtown at the Mackinaw Brewing Company and also a great meal at the Red Mesa Grill. I would return to the beautiful Traverse City area as often as I possibly can!
Good way to ruin a beautiful area
from A TripAdvisor Member
Our original room was 80 degrees, with no functional A/C. They had to switch our rooms and gave us an inferior room. We were suppose to have a bay view room with a 2 person jacuzzi, instead we received a watertower view room with a very very small one person jacuzzi (my wife is a small woman and she couldn't get comfortable in the tub!). The alarm clock was broken, the coffee maker was broken. Nothing seemed to work right. The temp in the room would not cool below 72 degrees. My wife an I like to sleep in a cool room about 68 degrees, this wasn't happening. Front desk service was rude and not helpful. Said there were no other rooms, yet the parking lot was mostly empty.
I would stay a way from this hotel, it was a nice way to ruin my wife's birthday!
Nice getaway

Stayed at Grand Traverse 9/16 for an overnight/spa service/breakfast promotion. We went with a bunch of girls from my office. Had a good time. The spa treatment was really wonderful. I had the stress relief treatment and it was heavenly. There are mostly men working in the spa, which I wasn't used to so that was kind of different. It was really nice, though. The hot tub is ok-not super warm. The hotel rooms are nice, nothing special. I don't know if the Tower rooms might be better. The Red Wings were staying there for training camp so that was pretty cool. Breakfast at the Sweetwater Cafe which was included with our stay was lovely. A nice buffet. The service was lacking the waitress didn't come for ten minutes or so. Dinner at The Grille on the golfcourse was nice. Have the fried snicker bar sundae!
Room promises not met for wedding party
from A TripAdvisor Member
The bride and groom booked 7 rooms for them and relatives. Promised 7 condos. A week before, told condos not available, but would have a block of rooms in the tower. Ok with bride and groom. Guess what, check in time, our party was not together--not on the same floor--not close to each other, not in the Tower. The bride and groom & their parents were on the very bottom floor. Other guests were on different floors in the tower. The bride was in tears. The Knot handled the wedding, and it was very nice ceremony. The meal in the Trillium was nice. All in all we worked thru the room issue, but were not happy at how they can not honor reservation request. Seems like a guest should get a reduced rate for not having reservation honored. There was a lot of money spent here and the room issue left a bad taste in 7 family members. It will be a long time before we visit again, if ever.
Algae filled pool!!!!!
from A TripAdvisor Member
A once gorgeous resort has now become a very forgetable stop. I don't believe the hotel has been updated since being built. The rooms were dull and dreary the service was just ok. The bottom of the pool was completely covered in green algae. There are just way to many other great choices in Traverse City. Look arround before making this choice.

Rent a bike in Travese City (2 hrs/$10). They have a wonderful bike trail around the bay, city & lakes. Plan on taking the full 2 hours or more. Take the wine tasting tour up the peninsulas (great wine and views).
Forget Grand Traverse Resort
We have never been to traverse city, and we searched the internet for places to stay. We found the Grand Traverse Resort and thought it would be agreat plae to stay. first of all the resort looks nothing like the website. They also don't care about you either....take it or leave it. e place looks like it doesn't belong. it's a skyscrapper in a beach town. The rooms were dirty, and thWe ended up leaving and found out that the mom and pop hotels on the water were so nice. It was cheaper, and we were able to watch the sunset infront of our room.
